Gérard, Etienne;
Revista de la educación superior , 2008,
Abstract: if a "brain drain" exists perhaps it means that knowledge is not valued enough within the country that suffers it. several reasons may exist, one of them can be because the labour market does not have good offers or recommends minor employments opposite to which they are given abroad, or domestic universities are not so credited like the ones elsewhere. so, to study the movement of the studies that europe offers for the inhabitants of the south of the mediterranean is an interesting process to observe. in this paper, we will study the case of the moroccan young men who go to france in pursuit of a better education to return to their country with a better experience as to have a better future.
"Polos de saber" y "cadenas de saber": Impactos de la movilidad estudiantil en la estructuración del campo científico mexicano
Gérard, Etienne;Maldonado, Estela;
Revista de la educación superior , 2009,
Abstract: having analyzed the paths of the teachers training abroad on the universidad autónoma metropolitana (uam), we observe the coincidence in certain destinies of disciplinary formation. these destinies are, principally, the united states, france, england and spain. we have named them as "poles of mobility" and "poles of knowledge" for the double value that they possess. they have become destination, formation and the origin of "chains of knowledge" established among the foreign and mexican researchers. the teachers of the uam particularly, those that were trained in french universities and laboratories, may let us ask ourselves about the impact of these chains of knowledge in the current processes of mobility and, in consequence, in the formation of the future teachers and investigators generations.
Factores de movilidad de una comunidad "internacionalizada"
Etienne Gérard,Estela Maldonado
Reencuentro , 2009,
What does the “arrow of time” stand for?  [PDF]
Etienne Klein
Natural Science (NS) , 2010, DOI: 10.4236/ns.2010.23033
Abstract: One hundred and thirty years after the work of Ludwig Boltzmann on the interpretation of the irreversibility of physical phenomena, and one century after Einstein's formulation of Special Relativity, we are still not sure what we mean when we talk of “time” or “arrow of time”. We shall try to show that one source of this difficulty is our tendency to confuse, at least verbally, time and becoming, i.e. the course of time and the arrow of time, two concepts that the formalisms of modern physics are careful to distinguish. The course of time is represented by a time line that leads us to define time as the producer of duration. It is customary to place on this time line a small arrow that, ironically, must not be confused with the “arrow of time”. This small arrow is only there to indicate that the course of time is oriented, has a well-defined direction, even if this direction is arbitrary. The arrow of time, on the other hand, indicates the possibility for physical systems to experience, over the course of time, changes or transforma-tions that prevent them from returning to their initial state forever. Contrary to what the ex-pression “arrow of time” suggests, it is there-fore not a property of time itself but a property of certain physical phenomena whose dynamic is irreversible. By its very definition, the arrow of time presupposes the existence of a well- established course of time within which – in addition – certain phenomena have their own temporal orientation. We think that it is worth-while to emphasize the difference between sev-eral issues traditionally subsumed under the label “the problem of the direction of time”. If the expressions “course of time”, “direction of time” and “arrow of time” were better defined, systematically distinguished from one another and always used in their strictest sense, the debate about time, irreversibility and becoming in physics would become clearer.
An Analysis of the Determinants of Arbitrage Spread  [PDF]
Etienne Redor
Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2019, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2019.93034
Abstract: This study examines the determinants of arbitrage spread of S&P 500 firms between 2004 and 2014. We find that bid hostility, the relative size of the target compared to the potential bidder and the acquisition premium paid by the bidding firm are associated with greater arbitrage spread while the proportion of cash in the offer and target termination fees are associated with smaller arbitrage spread.
Violência: um problema global de saúde pública
Dahlberg,Linda L.; Krug,Etienne G.;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232006000500007
Abstract: this article is a version of the introduction to the world report on violence and health, published by the world health organization (who). it presents a general description about this phenomenon and points some basic questions: concepts and definitions about the theme; the state of knowledge about it; nature and typology on violence; proposal of a quantitative and qualitative approach of an ecological model; responsibilities and functions of the public health sector and its potentiality to prevent and reduce violence in the world; the responsibilities of the nations and the policy makers in a intersetorial point of view; difficulties and obstacles for actuation and challenges for the health sector.

Didou Aupetit, Sylvie;Gérard, Etienne;
Perfiles educativos , 2011,
Abstract: in this paper the authors expect to analyze the following hypothesis from different angles: the national researchers system (sistema nacional de investigadores, sni) has created a standardization, progressive although incomplete, of the criteria governing the national scientific elite based on the criteria that prevail amongst the so-called developed countries. we study some of the indicators following which the sni members who belong to the most aged groups present obvious differences with regard to the less aged ones and are a symptom of this homogenization dynamics, like, for instance, the age at which the doctorate degree is obtained. we also analyze the distortions that characterize this universe, like v.g. the fact that women are under-represented. a systematic analysis of the 2009 data about the sni researchers, together with a sample of academ ic trajectories taken from the cvu (joint curriculum vitae, curriculum vitae único) helps us to show at what extent obtaining a degree in a foreign country helps to achieve a rapid career progression within the system, emphasizing the slants by disciplinary area and additional factors that allow to explain how they can get a high scientific prestige capital.

Extended clustering analyses to constrain the deflection angular scale and source density of the ultra-high-energy cosmic rays

Physics , 2011, DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361/201118279
Abstract: The search of a clustering signal in the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) is a standard method to assess the level of anisotropy of the data sets under investigation. Here, we first show how to quantify the sensitivity of a UHECR detector to the detection of anisotropy, and then propose a new method that pushes forward the study of the two-point auto-correlation function, enabling one to put astrophysically meaningful constraints on both the effective UHECR source density and the angular deflections that these charged particles suffer while they propagate through the galactic and intergalactic magnetic fields. We apply the method to simulated data sets obtained under various astrophysical conditions, and show how the input model parameters can be estimated through our analysis, introducing the notion of "clustering similarity" (between data sets), to which we give a precise statistical meaning. We also study how the constraining power of the method is influenced by the size of the data set under investigation, the minimum energy of the UHECRs to which it is applied, and a prior assumption about the underlying source distribution. We also show that this method is particularly adapted to data sets consisting of a few tens to a few hundreds of events, which corresponds to the current and near-future observational situation in the field of UHECRs.
