The Effect of Opioid Receptor Blockade on the Neural Processing of Thermal Stimuli

Abstract: The endogenous opioid system represents one of the principal systems in the modulation of pain. This has been demonstrated in studies of placebo analgesia and stress-induced analgesia, where anti-nociceptive activity triggered by pain itself or by cognitive states is blocked by opioid antagonists. The aim of this study was to characterize the effect of opioid receptor blockade on the physiological processing of painful thermal stimulation in the absence of cognitive manipulation. We therefore measured BOLD (blood oxygen level dependent) signal responses and intensity ratings to non-painful and painful thermal stimuli in a double-blind, cross-over design using the opioid receptor antagonist naloxone. On the behavioral level, we observed an increase in intensity ratings under naloxone due mainly to a difference in the non-painful stimuli. On the neural level, painful thermal stimulation was associated with a negative BOLD signal within the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex, and this deactivation was abolished by naloxone.
Classifying the expansion kinetics and critical surface dynamics of growing cell populations

Abstract: Based on a cellular automaton model the growth kinetics and the critical surface dynamics of cell monolayers is systematically studied by variation of the cell migration activity, the size of the proliferation zone and the cell cycle time distribution over wide ranges. The model design avoids lattice artifacts and ensures high performance. The monolayer expansion velocity derived from our simulations can be interpreted as a generalization of the velocity relationship for a traveling front in the Fisher-Kolmogorov-Petrovskii-Piskounov (FKPP) equation that is frequently used to model tumor growth phenomena by continuum models. The critical surface dynamics corresponds to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class for all parameters and model variations studied. While the velocity agrees quantitatively with experimental observations by Bru et al, the critical surface dynamics is in contrast to their interpretation as generic molecular-beam-epitaxy-like growth.
Bubbling in delay-coupled lasers

Abstract: We theoretically study chaos synchronization of two lasers which are delay-coupled via an active or a passive relay. While the lasers are synchronized, their dynamics is identical to a single laser with delayed feedback for a passive relay and identical to two delay-coupled lasers for an active relay. Depending on the coupling parameters the system exhibits bubbling, i.e., noise-induced desynchronization, or on-off intermittency. We associate the desynchronization dynamics in the coherence collapse and low frequency fluctuation regimes with the transverse instability of some of the compound cavity's antimodes. Finally, we demonstrate how, by using an active relay, bubbling can be suppressed.

L’hétéro-normativité monogame a commencé à être contestée, et c’est probablement le roman gothique qui a offert le médium le plus adapté pour renverser le concept traditionnel de la sexualité. L’objectif de cet article est d’explorer le caractère ambigu du vampire dans le Dracula de Bram Stoker (1897), un agencement possible de ce que le système sexuel normatif patriarcal a marginalisé comme autre . The second half of the nineteenth century was a turning point in conceptualizing sexual practices and behaviour in Western societies. Monogamous heteronormativity was beginning to be challenged, and it was probably the gothic novel that offered the most flexible medium for subverting the traditional concept of sexuality. The purpose of this paper is to explore the ambiguous character of the vampire in Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897); a possible agency of what the normative patriarchal gender system marginalized as ‘other.’

Abstract: The article addresses the problematic and urgent questions arising from the phenomenon of child soldiering. Children are cheap, obedient and easy to engage in fearless killing. These characteristics compel the leaders of armed groups to choose children for improving their armed forces. Fighting, lack of family and all the abuse which child-soldiers suffer cause — beyond the physical damage — very serious psycho-social problems. Reintegration is extremely difficult because of the way their personality has changed as a consequence of war. Therefore, prevention of child recruitment has a great significance which shall be ensured by proper legal regulation also in the field of international law.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to summarize the recent results on the stability of the parametric fundamental equation of information. Furthermore, by the help of a modification of a method we used in \cite{GM08} we shall give a unified proof for the Hyers--Ulam stability of the equation in question, assuming that the parameter does not equal to 1. As a corollary of the main result, a system of equations, that defines the recursive and semi--symmetric information measures is also discussed.
On the modified entropy equation

Abstract: The object of this paper is to solve the so--called modified entropy equation \[ f=f+ \muf<\mathbf{0}, \frac{y}{y+z}, \frac{z}{y+z}>, \] on the positive cone of $\R^{k}$, where $\mu$ is a given multiplicative function on this cone. After that the regular solutions of this equation are determined. Furthermore we investigate its connection between the entropy equation and other equations, as well.
