NURE Investigación , 2012,
Abstract: Deinstitutionalization processes in recent times have led to a new age in relations between family and mental health professionals. Care professionals were replaced, after the psychiatric reform, for care carried out by the family without the knowledge, information and skills to assume these functions. This is the situation of many families of patients with schizophrenia.Disabling features of schizophrenia usually cause depends on their families, who take care with the consequent impact on their lives. Psychosocial interventions assessing their work and want to build an alliance with them by giving them skills and coping mechanisms to reduce adverse family atmosphere, anticipate and solve problems and reduce the expressions of anger and guilt keeping appropiate expectations. However, these actions must be enforced by providing main caregivers with the skills that enable them to gain control, this is the main target of psychoeducational programs.Today there are many people in favour of such interventions in the early stages of schizophrenia. However, it is no clear how far development of these programs is supported by evidence of effectiveness. So it has proposed a psychosocial and psychoeducational program aimed at main caregivers of patients with schizophrenia in early stages. This program will be led by a psychiatric nurse in collaboration with other professionals in the interdisciplinary team; psychiatrist, clinical psychologist and social worker. It has developed clinical trial with a control group who will receive the gide for families, caregivers and people affected, "Cómo afrontar la esquizofrenia," and an experimental group will receive, in addition to the guide, the group intervention sessions.

Abstract: Accreditation processes in pedagogies: study about the agencies’performance1Macarena Domínguez, Martín Bascopé, Carlos Carrillo, Estíbaliz Lorca, Gabriel Olave, María de los ángeles Pozo2ABSTRACTThis paper reports results from a research on procedures for accreditation of ITT programs that Accreditation agencies follow in Chile. It analyzes whether the specific procedures for program evaluation are reliable or whether they depend on the judgment of the agency. Results show that despite agencies comply with current regulations, aspects that are regulated and have accurate descriptions about how to proceed are very few in relation to the huge number of procedures and decisions to be made by agencies, and so their work is much discretionary.
Abstract: the objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that cooperative learning strategies will help to increase nutrition knowledge of nurses and nursing assistants caring for the elderly in different institutional communities of the basque country, spain. the target population was a sample of volunteers, 16 nurses and 28 nursing assistants. training consisted of 12 nutrition education sessions using cooperative strategies conducted over a period of 3 consecutive weeks. the assessment instruments included two pretest and two posttest questionnaires with questions selected in multiplechoice format. the first questionnaire was about general knowledge of applied nutrition (0-88 point scale) and the second one on geriatric nutrition knowledge (0-18 point scale). data were analyzed using spss vs. 11.0. the outcomes indicated a significant increase in general nutrition knowledge (difference between the pre- and posttest mean score: 14.5±10.1; p<0.001) and in geriatric nutrition knowledge for all participants (difference between the pre- and post-test mean score: 4.6±4.6; p<0.001). so the results indicated that cooperative learning strategies could improve the nutrition knowledge of nursing staff. additionally, the results of this study provide direction to continuing nutrition education program planners regarding appropriate content and methodology for programs.

Abstract: Kidney biopsies from 58 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) proliferative nephritis were analyzed with immunohistochemistry (IHC) for intravascular platelet aggregates (CD61), macrophagic infiltration (CD68), and activated complement deposition (C4d). Clinical data at the time of kidney biopsy and follow-up were analyzed with regard to pathologic IHC data.Microthrombosis was present in 52% of the tissues. It was significantly more prevalent in patients with antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs) (62% versus 42%). The presence of microthrombosis significantly correlated with higher macrophagic infiltration. Macrophagic infiltration but not microthrombosis was significantly correlated with C4d deposition. Only macrophagic infiltration showed a correlation with SLE and renal activity (proteinuria and active sediment), whereas neither the presence of CD61+ microthrombi nor the extent of C4d deposition correlated with LN severity or outcome.Microthrombosis is associated with higher macrophagic infiltration in LN but does not seem to increase independently the severity of renal damage. Macrophagic infiltration was the best marker of SLE and renal activity in this LN series.Lupus nephritis (LN) develops in 30% to 50% of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) [1]. Standard clinical practice is to perform a renal biopsy if clinical or analytic parameters suggest renal involvement. Although some clinical variables, such as elevation of serum creatinine or persistent elevations of blood pressure, have prognostic value, histologic information obtained from biopsies continues to be indispensable for classification and outcome prediction [2,3]. Among local inflammatory markers, glomerular and interstitial macrophage accumulation is a feature of the most aggressive forms of human glomerulonephritis [4]. These cells, together with dendritic cells, are the major source of inflammatory cytokines [5], and their interaction with resident T cells may amplify renal inf

Abstract: Aberrant DNA methylation is one of the most frequent alterations in patients with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Using methylation bead arrays we analyzed the methylation status of 807 genes implicated in cancer in a group of ALL samples at diagnosis (n = 48). We found that 154 genes were methylated in more than 10% of ALL samples. Interestingly, the expression of 13 genes implicated in the TP53 pathway was downregulated by hypermethylation. Direct or indirect activation of TP53 pathway with 5-aza-2′-deoxycitidine, Curcumin or Nutlin-3 induced an increase in apoptosis of ALL cells. The results obtained with the initial group of 48 patients was validated retrospectively in a second cohort of 200 newly diagnosed ALL patients. Methylation of at least 1 of the 13 genes implicated in the TP53 pathway was observed in 78% of the patients, which significantly correlated with a higher relapse (p = 0.001) and mortality (p<0.001) rate being an independent prognostic factor for disease-free survival (DFS) (p = 0.006) and overall survival (OS) (p = 0.005) in the multivariate analysis. All these findings indicate that TP53 pathway is altered by epigenetic mechanisms in the majority of ALL patients and correlates with prognosis. Treatments with compounds that may reverse the epigenetic abnormalities or activate directly the p53 pathway represent a new therapeutic alternative for patients with ALL.

Abstract: there are multiple and cumulative causes of functional decline among hospitalized elderly patients hospitalization itself may frequently cause a state of irreversible functional decline, leading to complications not related to the initial reasons for the hospital admission. moreover, this lower functional status may carry risks of adverse events, potentially reducing quality of life. our general goal was to design a specific program to prevent adverse events relating to hospitalized frail elderly patients. we determined intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors within our security strategies, including actions to minimize or even mitigate adverse events according to a pre-established risk priority. evaluations were performed over 3 consecutive days during 3 different months. subjects of this prospective study were 133 hospitalized patients 80 years old or older, representing 20% of the patients in our center during the time of research. the outcome of our study is a valuation of the adverse events affecting hospitalized elderly patients, allowing the development of a plan for risk prevention, which includes specific care measures for these patients.
Control over molecular motion using the cis–trans photoisomerization of the azo group

Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry , 2012, DOI: 10.3762/bjoc.8.119
Abstract: Control over molecular motion represents an important objective in modern chemistry. Aromatic azobenzenes are excellent candidates as molecular switches since they can exist in two forms, namely the cis (Z) and trans (E) isomers, which can interconvert both photochemically and thermally. This transformation induces a molecular movement and a significant geometric change, therefore the azobenzene unit is an excellent candidate to build dynamic molecular devices. We describe selected examples of systems containing an azobenzene moiety and their motions and geometrical changes caused by external stimuli.
