Abstract: in the course of universal history ii at the university of quintana roo in the 7th semester of the bachelors program of humanities during the summer of 2007 students were given to read the historical novel from umberto eco in the name of the rose. this was done with didactic purposes in order to introduce the students to the middle ages and to teach them which specific part of this era and culture arrived in the new spain in the xvi century; i.e. scholastic philosophy, the castilian language, the latin language, and the catholic religion among other cultural aspects. it is important to consider that many of our students come not only from urban areas but from rural ones as well and in many cases they have a mayan background and many of them even speak the mayan language. this is one of the most important aspects to be considered while teaching courses of this nature; for many students this will be their first time encountering with this sort of knowledge new to them since it is not taught in any previous educational levels in the state of quintana roo, mexico.

Nitrogen Source Affects Glycolipid Production and Lipid Accumulation in the Phytopathogen Fungus Ustilago maydis  [PDF]

Advances in Microbiology (AiM) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/aim.2014.413104
Abstract: When cultured in medium limited of nitrogen sources, the phytopathogen Ustilago maydis produces two amphipathic glycolipids: Ustilagic acid (UA) and Mannosylerythritol lipid (MEL), which in addition to the hydrophilic moiety, contain dior tri-hydroxylated C16 fatty acids (UA), or C8 and C16 saturated fatty acids (MEL). We compared the growth and morphology of cells in YPD and in minimum media containing glucose and nitrogen sources such as nitrate or urea and those deprived of nitrogen. Nitrogen-starved cells showed a dramatic accumulation of internal lipids identified as lipid droplets when stained with the hydrophobic probe BODIPY; these lipid droplets were enriched in unsaturated fatty acids. Fatty acids in YPD or medium containing nitrate as nitrogen source showed a combination of saturated/unsaturated lipids, but when urea was the nitrogen source, cells only contained saturated fatty acids. The glycolipid profiles produced in the presence or absence of nitrogen showed preferences towards the production of one kind of glycolipid: cells in media containing nitrate or urea produced different proportions of UA/MEL, but under nitrogen starvation cells contained only UA. The emulsification capacity of the glycolipids produced in media with or without nitrogen was similar (72% - 76%). HPLC of the glycolipids allowed the separation of fractions with different emulsifying characteristics. Our results indicate that U. maydis accumulates lipid droplets when deprived of nitrogen source and confirm that UA is not under nitrogen control, but rather that MEL and lipid droplets are produced and oppositely regulated by nitrogen.

García Espinosa, Salvador;Sánchez Crispín, álvaro;
Investigaciones geográficas , 2008,
Abstract: this article examines the process through which the reception of remittances in the settlements of origin of emigrants encourages the transformation of the traditional housing and, in consequence, of the image of the local towns, which in the case-study settlements constitute the basis of their tourist potential. the main cause for the process of urban and architectural transformation in these towns is the surplus of economic resources related to the reception of remittances from local workers living in the united states. the dynamics of migration and tourism are viewed as a manifestation of a globalizing process that encourage expression of hybrid architecture.

Restrepo Espinosa,María Helena; Sánchez Brice?o,Natalia;
Avances en Psicología Latinoamericana , 2010,
Abstract: the following article includes a revision of the concepts of memory and legitimacy to understand conflict mediation, based on the relational symbolic model, developed by the group of family and community mediation of the università cattolica del sacro cuore of milano. the conflict mediation is based on the concept of ?bonding? as a structure that supports relationships, which is considered the symbolic fundament of the ethical and affective structures. these two axis support the bonding and include the categories of trust, hope, justice and loyalty. within this paradigm, the mediation of conflicts and the function of collective memory introduce other possibilities to understand justice and legitimacy as a core in the preservation and maintenance of family and community bonds.

Abstract: background: nutrition influences morbidity and mortality in patients with cystic fibrosis (cf), affecting their lung function. aim: to characterize the nutritional status of a group of cf patients and to analyze its evolution and relationship to lung function. patients and methods: a retrospective cohort of cf children and adolescents attemded in our institution for 15 years, was analyzed. age and form of presentation, mutation, weight and stature (measured annually at least), microbial colonization and forced expiratory volume in the first second (fev1) were registered. results: we gathered information about 33 patients, 64% males, diagnosed at 23.8 ± 45.6 months old (range 1-216), 85% had a genetic study (10 children had one or more df508 alleles) and 94% had pancreatic insufficiency. in their last visit they were 13.0 ± 5.8 years old, their body mass index z-score (bmiz) was -0.25 ± 1.2 and their fev1 was 80.4 ± 28.6%. according to bmi: 73% were eutrophic, 18% undernourished and 9% were overweight. according to weight/ for height index (wh), the figures for eutrophy, undernutrition and overweight were 70, 6 and 24%, respectively. only 12% had short stature. those with p. aeruginosa infection had lower bmi. there was a positive correlation between fev1 and bmiz (+0.46, p = 0.02), but not with wh. during follow-up, there was a gradual deterioration of weight, height, and bmiz after 10-12 years of age and an overall gradual fev1 decrease. conclusions: the prevalence of malnutrition in these patients with cf is high; undernutrition is higher if defined by bmiz and unlike wh, correlates to lung function. nutritional deterioration starts before adolescence.
