Clinical outcomes of lung metastasectomy in patients with colorectal cancer

Abstract: AIM: To investigate prognostic factors of survival following curative, non-palliative surgical removal of lung metastases secondary to colorectal cancer (CRC). METHODS: Between 1999 and 2009, a radical metastasectomy with curative intent was performed on lung metastases in 21 patients with CRC (15 male and 6 female; mean age: 57.4 ± 11.8 years; age range: 29-74 years) who had already undergone primary tumour resection. RESULTS: The mean number of lung metastases ranged from one to five. The mean overall survival was 71 ± 35 mo (median: 25 mo). After adjusting for potential confounders, multivariable Cox regression analyses predicted only the number of lung metastases (1 vs ≥ 2; hazard ratio: 7.60, 95% confidence interval: 1.18-17.2, P = 0.03) as an independent predictor of poor survival following lung resection for metastatic CRC. CONCLUSION: Resection of lung metastases is a safe and effective treatment in selected CRC patients with single lung metastases.

Abstract: Globalisation has helped the number of people to be cognizant of the importance of foreign language teaching and learning. As it is almost impossible to separate culture from language and the familiarization of diverse cultures from language do not help students for the real life because people from diverse cultural backgrounds use language differently, Kramsch (1993:258) holds that the aim of language learning is “cultivating international understanding, responsibility, and effective participation in a global age”. The purpose of this article is to explore the intercultural sensitivity among teacher trainees. For this purpose two scales were administered to the pre- service teachers to see to what extent they have intercultural sensitivity and how they see culture teaching in the curriculum. The results yield that Turkish teacher trainees integrate language teaching objectives with culture teaching and they prioritize the attitudinal knowledge, showing tolerance and sympathy for the others.

Abstract: Nowadays, educational systems are being questionned to find effective solutions to problems that are being encountered, and discussions are centered around the ways of restructuring systems so as to overcome difficulties. As the consequences of the traditional teaching approach, we can indicate that the taught material is not long-lasting but easily forgotten, that students do not sufficiently acquire the knowledge and skills that are aimed at developing, and that students lack transferring their knowledge to real life. In our current situation, individuals prefer to use educational resources where and when they want, based on their individual skills and abilities. Throughout the world, because the internet infrastructure has developed quite rapidly, it has been offered as an alternative way for a rich learning and teaching environment. This study aims at determining teacher candidates’ preferences regarding internet-based learning environments in student-centered education by involving the teacher candidates enrolled at Osmangazi University, Faculty of Education, Primary School Teaching, Mathematics Teaching and Computer and Educational Technologies Education programmes. This study is a descriptive study. The data collection scale consists of the “Constructivist Internet-based Education of Science Scale (CILES-S)”. The sample group of teacher candidates in the study showed differences with respect to their preferences regarding internet-based learning in student-centered education. The candidates scored higher in the internet-based learning environments of Cognitive Development and Critical Judgement. The lowest average scores of the sample group were observed in the internet-based learning environment of Episthemologic awareness.

Abstract: Different theories try to explain why some students are more successful than the others. Phenomenologists (Mc Combs, 1989) study self concepts of the students and find such students prone to achieve more. Attributional Theorists (Dweck, 1986; Weiner, 2005) focus on personal outcome such as effort or ability. Metacognitive theorists (Pressley, 2000; Schunk, Pintrich & Meece, 2007) examine students’ self regulated learning strategies whereas Constructivists (Maxim, 2009; Paris & Byrnes, 1989) believe supportive environments are important to be successful. In this study, the metacognitive theory will be given more importance and the purpose of the article is to find the correlation between self regulation, metacognition and autonomy.
Experimental Validation of the Unified Theory

Abstract: Hatsopoulos and Gyftopoulos (1976a,b,c,d) founded the Unified Quantum Theory of Mechanics and Thermodynamics. This theory encompasses both quantum mechanics and thermodynamics within a single mathematical framework. Unlike statistical approaches, it treats thermodynamics as a non-statistical (hence, a physical) theory and is intended to describe all reversible and irreversible phenomena. Unfortunately, the theory has long been criticized for not bringing anything new beyond statistical quantum thermodynamics. To break through this misconception that thermodynamics is a statistical theory, experimental validation at a microscopic scale, where statistical effects are negligible, would be fruitful. In this paper, which is based on the dissertation work of the author (1993), experiments that were previously reported are investigated within the framework of the new theory. It is argued that they provide an undeniable confirmation of the theory and the existence of irreversibility at the microscopic scale. An initial version of this paper was published in July of 2006 in the proceedings of ECOS’06, Aghia Pelagia, Crete, Greece.

Abstract: Whitty (1996 :89–90) identifies two sets of qualities that characterise a successful professional teacher: professional characteristics and professional competences. Professional characteristics include professional values, personal and professional development, communication and relationships as well as synthesis and application. Professional competences include knowledge and understanding of children and their learning, subject knowledge, curriculum, the education system and the teacher’s role. On the other hand, Medley and Shannon (1994) hold that there are three dimensions of teacher quality instead of two: teacher effectiveness (the degree to which a teacher achieves desired effects upon students), teacher competence (the extent to which a teacher has the knowledge and skills) and teacher performance (how a teacher behaves in the process of teaching). In situations where the teachers are interpersonally oriented, attentive, empathic and fully cognizant of the students’ ability and they believe in the students, the students are extremely positive towards teaching (Skolverket, 1995; Chedzoy and Burden, 2007). Even if differences between schools and classes can be explained to a certain extent by factors in the students’ backgrounds, it is believed that teachers and school leaders are those who have the greatest influence on the school’s inner environment and culture. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to probe how student teachers in the English language teaching department see teachers’ competence and skills, to which factors they attribute their success and failure in language learning , and what they think the solutions are.
Evaluating Higher Education Policy in Turkey: Assessment of the Admission Procedure to Architecture, Planning and Engineering Schools

Abstract: The admission procedure to higher education institutions in Turkey is based on the student’s high school grades and Central University Entrance Examination (CUEE) score, with a much greater weight on the latter. However, whether the CUEE is an appropriate measure in the admission process to universities is still a much-debated question. This study assesses the validity of the CUEE as a selection tool for design-based departments by examining the relationship between CUEE scores and success in university education in two design-based departments, architecture and city planning. The analysis is then extended to test the relationship in three engineering departments, computer engineering, civil engineering, and mechanical engineering. Based on the bivariate correlation and one sample t-test result, we report that CUEE scores and graduation grades have no relationship at all. We conclude that the current admission procedure to design-based schools based on solely a central examination score is not preferable.

The recent article describes immediate implant placement and loading in the anterior segment. The main aim of this treatment option was to deliver provisional prosthesis to the patient in the same day of surgery, form papilla contours, and eliminate waiting of osseointegration time and the second surgery.
