The Optimum Blend: Affordances and Challenges of Blended Learning For Students

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to elicit students’ perceptions regarding the most facilitative and most challenging features (affordances and barriers) in a blended course design. Following the phenomenological approach of qualitative inquiry, data were collected from ten undergraduate students who had experiences in a blended learning environment. Data were collected from the students’ weekly reflection papers, interviews with students, and documents, and analyzed by structurally and texturally describing the resulting experiences and perceptions. The findings of the study indicate that used together, online and face-to-face course structures offer several opportunities and challenges for students. The participating students mentioned interaction and communication opportunities, increased motivation, increased opportunities to voice their opinions, and reinforcement of learning as the affordances in the blended learning environment. The barriers included increased workload, cultural and technical barriers, and the inter-dependence of the two environments. Implications and suggestions are offered for instructors in higher education settings.
Multi-Tape Two-Level Morphology: A Case Study in Semitic Non-linear Morphology

Abstract: This paper presents an implemented multi-tape two-level model capable of describing Semitic non-linear morphology. The computational framework behind the current work is motivated by Kay (1987); the formalism presented here is an extension to the formalism reported by Pulman and Hepple (1993). The objectives of the current work are: to stay as close as possible, in spirit, to standard two-level morphology, to stay close to the linguistic description of Semitic stems, and to present a model which can be used with ease by the Semitist. The paper illustrates that if finite-state transducers (FSTs) in a standard two-level morphology model are replaced with multi-tape auxiliary versions (AFSTs), one can account for Semitic root-and-pattern morphology using high level notation.
Examination of Entrepreneurship from Humanistic Values Perspective  [PDF]

Abstract:

This study attempts to examine the influence of humanistic values people prefer on their entrepreneurship. The study is a qualitative study and the data were collected and analyzed using this method. Besides, relational screening model was used. The study group is composed of 482 students who were selected with random sampling method among students who attended various faculties at Selcuk University in 2012. In the study, Schwartz List of Values was used to measure individuals’ value preferences in their lives. Entrepreneurship Scale, which was developed by Yilmaz and Sünbül (2009), was used to measure their entrepreneurship tendency. In the study, it was revealed that there is a significant relation between humanistic values people prefer and entrepreneurship and, humanistic values explain entrepreneurship tendency.

On Convexification of Range Measurement Based Sensor and Source Localization Problems

Abstract: This manuscript is a preliminary pre-print version of a journal submission by the authors, revisiting the problem of range measurement based localization of a signal source or a sensor. The major geometric difficulty of the problem comes from the non-convex structure of optimization tasks associated with range measurements, noting that the set of source locations corresponding to a certain distance measurement by a fixed point sensor is non-convex both in two and three dimensions. Differently from various recent approaches to this localization problem, all starting with a non-convex geometric minimization problem and attempting to devise methods to compensate the non-convexity effects, we suggest a geometric strategy to compose a convex minimization problem first, that is equivalent to the initial non-convex problem, at least in noise-free measurement cases. Once the convex equivalent problem is formed, a wide variety of convex minimization algorithms can be applied. The paper also suggests a gradient based localization algorithm utilizing the introduced convex cost function for localization. Furthermore, the effects of measurement noises are briefly discussed. The design, analysis, and discussions are supported by a set of numerical simulations.

Abstract: This paper presents a generalised two-level implementation which can handle linear and non-linear morphological operations. An algorithm for the interpretation of multi-tape two-level rules is described. In addition, a number of issues which arise when developing non-linear grammars are discussed with examples from Syriac.

Computational Analyses of Arabic Morphology

Abstract: This paper demonstrates how a (multi-tape) two-level formalism can be used to write two-level grammars for Arabic non-linear morphology using a high level, but computationally tractable, notation. Three illustrative grammars are provided based on CV-, moraic- and affixational analyses. These are complemented by a proposal for handling the hitherto computationally untreated problem of the broken plural. It will be shown that the best grammars for describing Arabic non-linear morphology are moraic in the case of templatic stems, and affixational in the case of a-templatic stems. The paper will demonstrate how the broken plural can be derived under two-level theory via the `implicit' derivation of the singular.

Abstract: Web technology is changing rapidly every day and the Internet has become a lifestyle for people all over the world. It is obvious that the life style of societies is in a process of change, as new habits are acquired. Even though Internet use is one of the new social habits, it is one of the most important factors that induce this change as regards the convenience it brings to communication and other areas. The widespread use of Internet implies the idea that it can also be more widely used for educational purpose. Since chemistry teachers have a very important function in education, the determination of teachers’ attitude towards Internet use is also important. In the literature it is possible to see many studies on teacher candidates’ attitude towards Internet use; however studies on appointed teachers’ attitude are not very common. In our study, which aims to determine the attitude of appointed chemistry teachers according to different variables, we used the Internet use attitude scale. Participant teacher’s attitude towards Internet use was analyzed and interpreted according to the variables of gender, years on the job, type of school at which they are teaching, and duration of their weekly Internet use. It was seen that a vast majority of the teachers have personal computers, they connect to Internet at home and have positive attitude towards Internet use. It was also seen that female teachers have more positive attitude than male teachers in use of Internet for social interaction and communication.
