Localization of Mobile Robots Using Odometry and an External Vision Sensor
Daniel Pizarro,Manuel Mazo,Enrique Santiso,Marta Marron,David Jimenez,Santiago Cobreces,Cristina Losada
Sensors , 2010, DOI: 10.3390/s100403655
Abstract: This paper presents a sensor system for robot localization based on the information obtained from a single camera attached in a fixed place external to the robot. Our approach firstly obtains the 3D geometrical model of the robot based on the projection of its natural appearance in the camera while the robot performs an initialization trajectory. This paper proposes a structure-from-motion solution that uses the odometry sensors inside the robot as a metric reference. Secondly, an online localization method based on a sequential Bayesian inference is proposed, which uses the geometrical model of the robot as a link between image measurements and pose estimation. The online approach is resistant to hard occlusions and the experimental setup proposed in this paper shows its effectiveness in real situations. The proposed approach has many applications in both the industrial and service robot fields.

Santiso, Carlos;
Contexto Internacional , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-85292002000200002
Abstract: brazilian foreign policy has displayed both continuity and change with the restoration of democracy in 1985. while brazil has significantly strengthened its normative commitment to promoting democracy, based on a principled defence of the national interest, its engagement for the defence of democracy abroad has been hemmed in by its traditional attachment to the principle of national sovereignty. brazilian foreign policy has nevertheless significantly evolved since the return to civilian rule. fernando henrique cardoso's presidential diplomacy has provided a decisive impetus for strengthening brazil's normative commitment to democracy, both through the introduction of democracy clauses in regional institutions and its own bilateral relations. however, there exist an inherent tension between the dual objectives of brazilian foreign policy, which generates ambiguity in the conduct of foreign policy. there exist multifaceted trade-offs between the principles of democratic interference and national sovereignty, as well as between the twin goals of stability and democracy. this study explores this tension by assessing brazil's efforts at promoting democracy abroad and its response to threats to democracy and flawed elections during the last decade. it examines ten cases where democracy was at risk. it argues the principled defence of the national interest, on which brazilian democracy promotion rests, is unlikely to survive cardoso's presidency. brazil needs to successfully resolve the inherent tension between the principle of national sovereignty and its commitment to promoting and protecting democracy abroad, both to clarify its foreign policy objectives and strengthen regional collective action mechanisms.
Alternative Sensor System and MLP Neural Network for Vehicle Pedal Activity Estimation
Ahmed M. Wefky,Felipe Espinosa,José A. Jiménez,Enrique Santiso,José M. Rodríguez,Alfredo J. Fernández
Sensors , 2010, DOI: 10.3390/s100403798
Abstract: It is accepted that the activity of the vehicle pedals (i.e., throttle, brake, clutch) reflects the driver’s behavior, which is at least partially related to the fuel consumption and vehicle pollutant emissions. This paper presents a solution to estimate the driver activity regardless of the type, model, and year of fabrication of the vehicle. The solution is based on an alternative sensor system (regime engine, vehicle speed, frontal inclination and linear acceleration) that reflects the activity of the pedals in an indirect way, to estimate that activity by means of a multilayer perceptron neural network with a single hidden layer.
Villas B?as, Lúcia Pintor Santiso;
Cadernos de Pesquisa , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-15742010000200005
Abstract: the article aims to emphasize the historicity of the social representations as a basic aspect for the understanding of their processes of generativity and of stabilization of contents. for so, it considers social representations as the consequence, on the one hand, of the appropriation of contents from chronological different periods and, on the other hand, from those contents produced by new contexts. therefore, the article presents some aspects of the reciprocity between social representations and history of mentalities in order to emphasize that the processes of objectivation and anchorage, which are constitutive of the social representations, are privileged processes for the investigation of this historicity.

Pineda,G.; Scollo,K.; Santiso,G.; Lehmann,E.; Arechavala,A.;
Revista argentina de microbiolog?-a , 2008,
Abstract: in order to estimate the frequence of candida dubliniensis in clinical samples in f. j. mu?iz infectious diseases hospital, a total of 388 yeasts from september 2005 to august 2007. there were 212 isolates which presented a green color on chromagar? candida medium and produced germ tubes and chlamidoconidiae in milk-agar; so as to distinguish whether they corresponded to candida albicans or c. dubliniensis, different phenotypical methods were utilized. it was also evaluated the usefulness of each one in order to suggest a simple, economic and reliable identification algorithm. each isolate was subcultured in two chromogenic media and then, the following determinations were done: chlamidospores production in staib-agar, tomato-carrot-agar and tobacco-agar, colonies macromorphology was also studied in the last medium; opacity-test in tween 80-cacl2 agar (lipase activity), growing capacity at 45 °c, and d-xylose assimilation. thirteen strains (6.1%) corresponded to c. dubliniensis. the difference in color between both species on chromogenic media was not so stressed as it is pointed out in some works. the more specific and sensitive tests were the ability to grow at 45 °c, d-xylose assimilation, color and macroscopic appearance in tobacco-agar. between 11.6% and 15.1% of c. albicans strains produced chlamidoconidiae in the 3 differential media tested. the opacity halo (lipase) was evident in 95.6% of c. albicans isolates but 2 out of 13 c. dubliniensis also presented precipitation halo. we consider that at least 3 different phenotypical methods should be used to distinguish properly these two species since none of the tests is absolutely sensitive or specific.
Relationship between contemporary art and Occuptional Therapy “Thoughts”

TOG : Revista de Terapia Ocupacional de la APGTO , 2004,
Abstract: The Emperor's Suit is a well-known fairy tale; many professionals in this field have compared Contemporary Art with the moral of this tale, and precisely enough, this transgression is produced. But does the same occur in Occupational Therapy? These and other thoughts are some of the ideas we are trying to lay on the table.The initial idea to link these two disciplines emerged in a peculiar way: patients and therapist sitting down around a table in a room in the department of Occupational Therapy in a hospital.For us it is revision of something we have experienced as well as an activity which has not been planned strictly from the therapeutic point of view.It has been interesting to participate in a joint project of this kind in which both Therapist and user can collaborate. And in which we would like to count on the same comprehension effort that we expect from our patients, spectators... readers.
Aislamiento de Candida dubliniensis en distintos materiales clínicos: Análisis de métodos fenotípicos de diferenciación con Candida albicans Isolation of Candida dubliniensis in different clinical samples: Analysis of phenotypical methods to differenciate from Candida albicans

The frst case observed in Argentina of AIDS-related human penicillosis is herein presented. The patient was a six- teen year-old young man coming from a rural area of southern China. He was admitted at the F. J. Mu iz Hospital of Buenos Aires city with severe pneumonia and adult respiratory distress. Penicillium marneffei was isolated from bronchoalveolar lavage fuid and was microscopically observed in a skin cytodiagnosis. P. marneffei identifcation was confrmed by rRNA amplifcation and its phenotypic characteristics. The patient suffered an advanced HIV infection and also presented several AIDS-related diseases due to CMV, nosocomial bacterial infections and Pneumocystis jirovecii which led to a fatal outcome.
