Abstract: a comparative analysis of flow models developed for the solids in a multistage spouted bed system designed by arriola (1997), is presented. models for the residence time distribution, suitable for commercial applications in processing seeds and grains, has been selected in the study. the experimental residence time distribution function was obtained by the stimulus-response technique using colored particles. four models were compared: three compartment models, and the stirred-tank-in-series model. evaluation of these models showed that the compartment models are more suitable for commercial applications. the statistical analysis allows to conclude that the best model, due to its simplicity, is the compartment model proposed by arriola

Abstract: key properties of seed of mexican lime (citrus aurantifolia swingle) were studied for potential uses by the food industry. characteristics considered included physical properties, composition, toxicity to rodents (average lethal dose and chronic toxicity), as well as germicidal activity (inhibition rings and germicidal effectiveness). the seed contained 21% protein, 39% vegetable oil and 29% fiber, particularly lignin. the seed could potentially be used as a basic component for nutritional supplements or functional food products. the toxicity was nil, and thus seed derivatives were safe for human consumption. some germicidal effectiveness was found against candida albicans, 85.77% (starting population = 0.304*108 ufc/ml), and against escherichia coli, 91.447% (starting population = 190*108 ufc/ml), suggesting seed extracts could be used as an ingredient in germicidal products.

Abstract: Se obtuvieron propiedades clave de la semilla de limón mexicano (Citrus aurantifolia swingle) para su posible aprovechamiento en la industria de alimentos. Se consideraron propiedades físicas, composición, toxicidad en roedores (prueba de dosis letal media y toxicidad crónica) y actividad germicida (prueba de halos de inhibición y efectividad germicida). La semilla contiene 21% de proteínas, 39% de aceite vegetal y 29% de fibra, especialmente lignina en cantidad considerable, lo que hace viable su uso como materia prima para nutracéuticos o alimentos funcionales. La toxicidad de la semilla resultó nula por lo que es apta para el consumo humano. Se encontró cierta efectividad germicida para Candida albicans 85.77% (población Inicial = 0.304*10(8) UFC/ml) y para Escherichia coli 91.447% (población Inicial = 190*10(8) UFC/ml), por lo que puede ser usada como ingrediente en germicidas. Abstract: Se presenta un análisis comparativo de modelos de flujo desarrollados para los sólidos de un sistema de lechos fuente en multietapa (multistage spouted bed) dise ado por Arriola (1997). Se seleccionaron modelos de distribución del tiempo de residencia de los sólidos adecuados para la aplicación comercial del sistema en el tratamiento de granos y semillas. La determinación experimental de la función de distribución del tiempo de residencia se llevó acabo mediante la técnica estímulo-respuesta utilizando partículas coloreadas. Se compararon cuatro modelos: tres de compartimentos y el de tanques-en-serie. La comparación de esos modelos mostró que los de compartimentos son los más apropiados para aplicaciones comerciales. Adolescent Alexithymia Research: Indigenous Sample Compared to Hispanic Sample in Southern Chile  [PDF]

Abstract: Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) adolescent research became increasingly popular. We found no data examining two different ethnical adolescent groups sharing comparable environment. Furthermore, there are no indications that TAS-20 has ever been used in Chile. We conducted a transcultural comparison investigating the influence of ethnicity, gender and age on a low socioeconomic teenage population. Additionally, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was performed. In this cohort study (n = 225), 95 indigenous students were compared to the Hispanic control group of 130 participants. We found proper replicability and internal reliability of TAS-20 and the three-factor solution for our sample. We measured high alexithymia rates and significant differences between the ethnicities and genders but there was no influence of age. Although factor 3 (EOT) was inconsistent to some degree, TAS-20 resulted to be an appropriate measure for Chilean adolescents. Indigenous ethnicity, gender, low socioeconomic status, and power distance in a rural environment contribute to high alexithymia.
Gravitational and higher-order form factors of the pion in chiral quark models

Abstract: The gravitational form factor of the pion is evaluated in two chiral quark models and confronted to the recent full-QCD lattice data. We find good agreement for the case of the Spectral Quark Model, which builds in the vector-meson dominance for the charge form factor. We derive a simple relation between the gravitational and electromagnetic form factors, holding in the considered quark models in the chiral limit. The relation implies that the gravitational mean squared radius is half the electromagnetic one. We also analyze higher-order quark generalized form factors of the pion, related to higher moments in the symmetric Bjorken X-variable of the generalized parton distribution functions, and discuss their perturbative QCD evolution, needed to relate the quark-model predictions to the lattice data. The values of the higher-order quark form factors at t=0, computed on the lattice, also agree with our quark model results within the statistical and method uncertainties.

Abstract: The vector and axial pion-photon transition distribution amplitudes are analyzed in the Spectral Quark Model. We proceed by the evaluation of double distributions through the use of a manifestly covariant calculation based on the alpha representation of propagators. As a result polynomiality is incorporated and calculations become rather simple. Explicit formulas, holding at the low-energy quark-model scale, are obtained. The corresponding form factors for the anomalous decay pi0 -> gamma gamma* and the radiative pion decays are also evaluated and confronted with the data.
Pion electromagnetic form factor, perturbative QCD, and large-Nc Regge models

Abstract: We present a construction of the pion electromagnetic form factor where the transition from large-Nc Regge vector meson dominance models with infinitely many resonances to perturbative QCD is built in explicitly. The construction is based on an appropriate assignment of residues to the Regge poles, which fulfills the constraints of the parton-hadron duality and perturbative QCD. The model contains a slowly falling off non-perturbative contribution which dominates over the perturbative QCD radiative corrections for the experimentally accessible momenta. The leading order and next-to-leading order calculations show a converging pattern which describes the available data within uncertainties, while the onset of asymptotic QCD takes place at extremely high momenta, Q ~ 10^3-10^4 GeV. The method can be straightforwardly extended to study other form factors where the perturbative QCD result is available.
Bethe-Salpeter Approach for Meson-Meson Scattering in Chiral Perturbation Theory

Abstract: The Bethe-Salpeter equation restores exact elastic unitarity in the s- channel by summing up an infinite set of chiral loops. We use this equation to show how a chiral expansion can be undertaken by successive approximations to the potential which should be iterated. Renormalizability of the amplitudes in a broad sense can be achieved by allowing for an infinite set of counter-terms as it is the case in ordinary Chiral Perturbation Theory. Within this framework we calculate the $\pi \pi$ scattering amplitudes both for s- and p-waves at lowest order in the proposed expansion where a successful description of the low-lying resonances ($\sigma$ and $\rho$) and threshold parameters is obtained. We also extract the SU(2) low energy parameters ${\bar l}_{1,2,3,4}$ from our amplitudes.
