Corrosion Inhibition of Carbon Steel in HCl Solution by Some Plant Extracts

Abstract: The strict environmental legislations and increasing ecological awareness among scientists have led to the development of “green” alternatives to mitigate corrosion. In the present work, literature on green corrosion inhibitors has been reviewed, and the salient features of our work on green corrosion inhibitors have been highlighted. Among the studied leaves, extract Andrographis paniculata showed better inhibition performance (98%) than the other leaves extract. Strychnos nuxvomica showed better inhibition (98%) than the other seed extracts. Moringa oleifera is reflected as a good corrosion inhibitor of mild steel in 1?M HCl with 98% inhibition efficiency among the studied fruits extract. Bacopa monnieri showed its maximum inhibition performance to be 95% at 600 ppm among the investigated stem extracts. All the reported plant extracts were found to inhibit the corrosion of mild steel in acid media. 1. Introduction Among the several methods of corrosion control and prevention, the use of corrosion inhibitors is very popular. Corrosion inhibitors are substances which when added in small concentrations to corrosive media decrease or prevent the reaction of the metal with the media. Inhibitors are added to many systems, namely, cooling systems, refinery units, chemicals, oil and gas production units, boiler, and so forth. Most of the effective inhibitors are used to contain heteroatom such as O, N, and S and multiple bonds in their molecules through which they are adsorbed on the metal surface. It has been observed that adsorption depends mainly on certain physicochemical properties of the inhibitor group, such as functional groups, electron density at the donor atom, π-orbital character, and the electronic structure of the molecule. Though many synthetic compounds showed good anticorrosive activity, most of them are highly toxic to both human beings and environment. The use of chemical inhibitors has been limited because of the environmental threat, recently, due to environmental regulations. These inhibitors may cause reversible (temporary) or irreversible (permanent) damage to organ system, namely, kidneys or liver, or disturbing a biochemical process or disturbing an enzyme system at some site in the body. The toxicity may be manifest either during the synthesis of the compound or during its applications. These known hazardous effects of most synthetic corrosion inhibitors are the motivation for the use of some natural products as corrosion inhibitors. Abstract: The self-metathesis of methyl oleate and methyl ricinoleate was carried out in the presence of ruthenium alkylidene catalysts 1–4 in [bmim] and [bdmim][ X] type ionic liquids (RTILs) ( X = PF 6 ?, BF 4 – and NTf 2 ?) using the gas chromatographic technique. Best catalytic performance was obtained in [bdmim][X] type ionic liquids when compared with?[bmim][ X] type ionic liquids. Catalyst recycling studies were also carried out in the room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) with catalysts 1–4 in order to explore their possible industrial application.
Adsorption and Quantum Chemical Studies on the Inhibition Potentials of Some Thiosemicarbazides for the Corrosion of Mild Steel in Acidic Medium

Abstract: Three thiosemicarbazides, namely 2-(2-aminophenyl)-N phenylhydrazinecarbothioamide (AP4PT), N,2-diphenylhydrazinecarbothioamide (D4PT) and 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-N-phenyl hydrazinecarbothioamide (HP4PT), were investigated as corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in H2SO4 solution using gravimetric and gasometric methods. The results revealed that they all inhibit corrosion and their % inhibition efficiencies (%IE) follow the order: AP4PT > HP4PT > D4PT. The %IE obtained from the gravimetric and gasometric experiments were in good agreement. The thermodynamic parameters obtained support a physical adsorption mechanism and the adsorption followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Some quantum chemical parameters were calculated using different methods and correlated with the experimental %IE. Quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) approach was used on a composite index of some quantum chemical parameters to characterize the inhibition performance of the studied molecules. The results showed that the %IE were closely related to some of the quantum chemical parameters, but with varying degrees. The calculated/theoretical %IE of the molecules were found to be close to their experimental %IE. The local reactivity has been studied through the Fukui and condensed softness indices in order to predict both the reactive centers and to know the possible sites of nucleophilic and electrophilic attacks.

Abstract: Zinc(II) and nickel(II)-complexes of 5-methoxyisatin 3-[N-(4-chlorophenyl) thiosemicarbazone] (H2MICP) were synthesized and characterized by infrared, ultraviolet and 1H-NMR spectroscopies as well as elemental analysis. Model of H2MICP and its zinc(II) and nickel(II)-complexes were optimized with B3LYP method using 6-31G(d,p), 6-311G(d,p), 6-311++G(d,p), 6-311++G(2d,2p) basis sets. The calculated 1H-NMR, UV and IR spectra data were compared with experimental results. In addition to the Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis of H2MICP and its Zinc(II) and Nickel(II) complexes, Fukui functions of H2MICP were also reported.
The Effect of Alcohol on Uric Acid Level in Consumers

Abstract: The effect of alcohol in uric acid level was investigated in regular and irregular alcohol consumers who were mainly males. The result showed that the mean (±SE) of non-consumers of alcohol and consumers (combined) was 228 ±3.32 μmol/L and 308.89 ±16.91 μmol/L respectively and the means were significantly different at p<0.05. The mean uric acid level in irregular consumers before administration of alcohol and that after administration was 282.07 ±8.85 and 314. ±11.89 μmol/L respectively. The mean uric acid level in regular consumers and irregular consumers with history of gouty arthritis before and after administration of alcohol were 339.31 ±32.24 μmol/L, are 454.33 ±21.57 μmol/L and 402. 15 ±49.32 μmol/L and 579.50 ±31.15 μmol/L respectively. Comparison of mean values before and after alcohol intake between these categories were significant at p<0.05. The effect of alcohol on the increased uric acid level in both regular and irregular consumers shows significance at p<0.05. (Journal of Applied Sciences & Environmental Management: 2002 6(1): 5-7)
