Evolution of sarcoma 180 in mice infected with Trypanosoma cruzi
Pereira, Fausto Edmundo Lima;Sassine, William Assad;Bouhabib, Dimith Chequer;Lucas, Elton de Almeida;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1983, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761983000300001
Abstract: mice infected with trypanosoma cruzi were challenged with 2x10[raised to the power of 6] cells of sarcoma 180 (ascite tumor) by i.p. route, on day seven post infection. tumor development was followed by evaluation of weight gain, by measurement of ascitic fluid produced and enumeration of tumor cells in ascitic fluid. infected mice were more resitant to tumor development as demonstrated by reduction in ascites formation and by reduction in the number of tumor cells in ascitic fluid, at different time intervals after tumor challenge. the number of peritoneal cells exsudated after tumor inoculation was greater in infected mice than in controls. this increased resitance of mice infected with t. cruzi to tumor development could be due to the action of macrophages activated by the infection and by the action of endotoxins absorbed from the gut or produced by the own parasite.

Association between periodontitis and lung disease

RGO : Revista Gaúcha de Odontologia , 2010,
Abstract: Objective: To verify the association between periodontal disease and lung disease from an epidemiological, case and control survey, in patients who attended the first aid service of the Adriano Jorge Foundation Hospital, Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, from June 2006 to February 2007. Methods: The sample consisted of 140 patients, among whom community-acquired pneumonia was present in 60% (n = 70), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in 40% (case-group); and 70 patients without respiratory disease (control group), ranging between 19 and 69 years of ages, with a mean age of 41.3, and standard deviation of 13.6 years. The clinical parameters for evaluating periodontal changes were obtained by means of pocket depth, bleeding on probing, plaque index and clinical attachment loss. Results: Both groups showed no significant difference in any of the control variables (p>0.05). The groups showed significant difference only in the plaque index (p <0.05) and the mean was 0.36, standard deviation 0.30 in control group, and in the cases a mean of 0.51, standard deviation 0.35. Conclusion: Periodontal disease showed no significant association with lung disease, both in severity and extension (p> 0.05). Due to the increase in the bacterial plaque index in the oral cavity of patients with respiratory diseases, further studies should be conducted to verify what the relationship between the two diseases is.

Comunicata Scientiae , 2013,
Enhancing User Identification with the Independent Learning Centre at Sung Bin Home for Girls
Elton LaClare
Studies in Self-Access Learning Journal , 2011,
Abstract: The Independent Learning Centre at Sung Bin Home for Girls is a language and life skills learning environment for girls between the ages of 8 and 18 who reside at Sung Bin Orphanage in Gwangju, South Korea. Although initially learners exhibited a great deal of enthusiasm for the centre, over time interest faded to the extent that many ceased to be regular users. This article describes the efforts of volunteers and orphanage staff to revive interest through a community art project intended to enhance learner identification with the centre. In addition to highlighting the importance of collaboration among stakeholders, the article asserts that undertakings of the type described here should be seen as part of an on-going process of maintaining engagement.

Acontecimento, Temporalidade e a Constru o do Sentido de Atualidade no Discurso Jornalístico
ANTUNES, Elton
Contemporanea : Revista de Comunica??o e Cultura , 2007,
Abstract: This paper explores the temporal organization as a dimension of analysis in the production of journalistic event. It is proposed an understanding of the present time in journalistic discourse as a necessary sense produced from the combination of certain representations of the time figure. The approach focuses on the way the temporality integrates the system of rules that defines the particularity of the journalistic discourse, that systemize the world and to produce the culturally related meaning to the present time information.
The universal semigroup of a $Γ$-semigroup
Elton Pasku
Mathematics , 2013,
Abstract: Given a $\Gamma$-semigroup $S$, we construct a semigroup $\Sigma$ in such a way that one sided ideals and quasi-ideals of $S$ can be regarded as one sided ideals and quasi-ideals respectively of $\Sigma$. This correspondence and other properties of $\Sigma$, allow us to obtain several results for $S$ without having the need to work directly with it, but solely employing well known results of semigroup theory. For example, we obtain the Green's theorem for $\Gamma$-semigroups found in \cite{PT}, as a corollary of the usual Green's theorem in semigroups. Also we prove that, if $S$ is a $\Gamma$-semigroup and $\gamma_{0} \in \Gamma$ such that $S_{\gamma_{0}}$ is a completely simple semigroup, then for every $\gamma \in \Gamma$, $S_{\gamma}$ is completely simple too.
A semigroup theoretic approach to the Whitehead asphericity problem
Elton Pasku
Mathematics , 2014,
Abstract: Related to a group presentation $\mathcal{P}=\mathcal{GP}(\mathbf{x},\mathbf{r})$ we consider two monoids. The first one is the monoid $\Upsilon$ defined by the monoid presentation $\mathcal{MP}(Y \cup Y^{-1}, P)$ where $Y^{\varepsilon}$ ($\varepsilon=\pm1$) is the set of symbols $(r^{u})^{\varepsilon}$ ($\varepsilon=\pm1$) with $r \in \mathbf{r}$ and $u \in FG(\mathbf{x})$ and $P$ consists of all crossed commutations $(ab,ba^{\theta b})$ and $(ab,b^{\theta a^{-1}}a)$ where $a,b \in Y\cup Y^{-1}$. The second one is the universal enveloping group $\mathcal{G}(\Upsilon)$ of $\Upsilon$ given by the group presentation $\mathcal{GP} (Y \cup Y^{-1}, \hat{P})$ where $\hat{P}$ is the set of all words $ab\iota(a^{\theta b})\iota(b)$ and $ab\iota(a)\iota(b^{\theta a^{-1}})$ with $\iota(c)$ standing for the inverse of $c$ in the free group over $Y\cup Y^{-1}$. In terms of these monoids we prove that if $d=(a_{1},...,a_{n})$ is an identity $Y$-sequence over $\mathcal{P}$, then $d$ is Peiffer equivalent to the empty sequence if and only if, the image of $d$ in $\mathcal{G}(\Upsilon)$ belongs to the subgroup $\hat{\mathfrak{U}}$ of $\mathcal{G}(\Upsilon)$ generated by the images of $aa^{-1}$ with $a \in Y \cup Y^{-1}$. We use this to prove a necessary and sufficient condition under which a subpresentation of an aspherical group presentation is aspherical.
