Blair,Elsa; Grisales Hernández,Marisol; Mu?oz Guzmán,Ana María;
Universitas Humanística , 2009,
Abstract: the urban conflict in medellin between 1995 and 2002 has been described, fundamentally, as an urban war that can be explained based on the armed political conflict that took place on a national level. the presence of armed actors linked to the autodefensas unidas de colombia (auc) - essentially the "cacique nutibara" block - and the guerilla groups fuerzas armadas revolucionarias de colombia farc and ejercito de liberacion nacional eln, allowed many analysts to explain the conflict in medellin as a "local expression" of the conflict that took place on the national stage. this article questions this thesis. instead it suggests that more than an urban "war," explainable from the national situation and under a conception of state and instrumental/rational politics and power, medellin has been living inserted into a multiplicity of conflicts that articulate in specific ways, and which involve much more subjective aspects that can be seen in pre-existing neighborhood dynamics from before the "war," which because of these circumstances we prefer to call urban conflict instead. on the basis on what we found during the investigation and centered on systematic and extensive fieldwork (workshops, interviews, walkthroughs, images, photographs etc.) that took four months to complete, we suggest to the experts on urban violence some new "keys" to interpret the conflict in medellin. one of those is tied to subjective aspects or dimensions of neighborhood life that intervene significantly in conflict dynamics, including political conflicts.

Open Journal of Internal Medicine (OJIM) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojim.2013.32007
Abstract:

Introduction: Studying the use of psychoactive substances in completed suicide is essential in order to understand its role in the suicide generating stimuli. The most commonly reported substances are alcohol and opioids. Method: This is a retrospective study of completed suicide database of the Forensics Medical office in the city of Mexicali from 1999 to 2005. This is the capital of the Mexican state of Baja California in the US-Mexico border region. Results: Out of 288 suicides, 260 were men, and the most frequent drug found on autopsy was methamphetamine (p < 0.001). The modal victim was a young male (20 - 39 years old), employed in blue-collar jobs, lived in an urban area, found in their homes, and died by hanging. Discussion: Although no causal effect can be drawn, our study results suggest that methamphetamine use may be a risk factor for suicide in this sample.

Goenaga Conde,Beatriz; Ronquillo Hernández,Elsa;
Humanidades M??dicas , 2009,
Abstract: due to historical and cultural filiations, the caribbean literature is part and a true example of the latin american culture. its literary particularities are based on an identity discourse, which defends a unique and, at the same time, plural culture that distinguishes it from western referents pre-established by socioeconomic power centers. this paper presents the fundamental evolution and development phases of the caribbean identity expression. some examples of this literary discourse were carefully selected to further an accurate understanding of its extra literary values. since this literary discourse is based on an aesthetic ideal of deeply ontological roots, an approach to it means penetrating the essence of the region’s history and cultural patrimony. the study of the topic is important to form cuban professors socioculturally, particularly those who work in multicultural environments.

Ronquillo Hernández,Elsa; Goenaga Conde,Beatriz;
Humanidades M??dicas , 2009,
Abstract: communicative competence appears as a constituent element of professional competence. its concept has varied through the years, which has brought about the emergence of different schools and trends in various countries. communicative competence has been analyzed by dissimilar areas of science. this work presents a chronological study of the emergence, evolvement and development of the term from the ideas of the most outstanding personalities in the field. given the relevance of the topic, not only for the teaching of foreign languages but for many other disciplines that are fuelled by the postulates and theories that it proclaims, it is necessary to study and deepen into the concept as a way to enrich and improve the contents and syllabuses which are part of the medicine career curriculum so that a step forward is taken in the efforts to educate more capable and better prepared doctors.

Humanidades M??dicas , 2009,
Humanidades M??dicas , 2009,
Due to historical and cultural filiations, the Caribbean literature is part and a true example of the Latin American culture.
Gilardón, Elsa;Pocovi, Mariana;Hernández, Carmen;Olsen, Ana;
Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X2001000300025
Abstract: in the genus lycopersicon, different metabolites are secreted by the glandular trichomes of leaves and stems. these compounds have been associated to different tomato pests resistance. the south american tomato pinworm, tuta absoluta (meyrick), is one of the most harmful pests in south america. the females oviposit on tomato leaves and the larvae mine the leaf mesophyl, stems, flowers and fruits. some wild accessions of lycopersicon keep their capacity to synthesize allelochemicals that protect them from the pest. in this paper a comparison was made between the tomato pinworm oviposition on leaves with and without trichomes of l. esculentum (mill.) cv. uco plata, a susceptible cultivar, and l. hirsutum f. glabratum (mull.) pi 134417, a resistant wild accession. results suggest that the female oviposit without distinction on the leaves of both species, with or without glandular trichomes. the presence of these trichomes and their exudates do not have an inhibitor effect on the insect oviposition.

Carvajal Martínez,Francisco; Herrera Hernández,Elsa;
Revista Cubana de Medicina General Integral , 1998,
Abstract: the present therapeutic estrategy for the insulin-dependent diabetic is analyzed. it is stressed the need of attaining normoglycaemia as a criterion of metabolic control expressed in normal values of glycosylated hemoglobin or hb alc quarterly. emphasis shoud be made on the education received by the diabetic patients in connection with the disease, reinforcing it at every office visit, and reevaluating it periodically. being on a diet is very important, too. we should use highly purified insulin with insulin schemes based mainly on mixtures of insulins or regimes of multiple doses of insulin. it is necessary that the patient attains the glycaemic control. we should try to locate and study the possible risk groups that may develop this disease
The Potential and Effectiveness of ITC: Lessons Learnt from it’s Attempted Integration in the Teaching Learning Process Potencial y efectividad de las TIC: Algunas lecciones aprendidas en el intento de su integración al proceso de ense anza-aprendizaje
Elsa Herrero Tunis,Lourdes María Hernández Rabell
Revista Cubana de Ingeniería , 2011, DOI: 10.1234/rci.v2i1.36
Abstract: Today, there are different opinions on the use of information technology and communication (ITC) in the learning process and while there are insufficient study and evidences on the topic, many researchers discuss the topic with great enthusiasm with regards to the fact that ITC helps in the teaching – learning process (TLP). Interestingly, there is a balance between the possibilities that ITC holds for education and the transformative effect accomplished and achieved in the teaching practice. The authors of this work attempt to explain from a historical point of view the regularities recognized by experts in the teaching field and from different perspectives, classifications and practical experience strive to guide the controversial fact among the different levels of use and impact of ITC in training, as well as to show that ITC integration represents improvements in the teaching learning process in higher educational institutions in meeting the demands of today’s world. From this analysis and gathered experiences from over ten years, are shared by a way of conclusion, a set of ideas that serve as lessons learnt, which conveniently confirm the decisions taken.
