Abstract: essential oil compositions of aerial parts from twelve basil cultivars (ocimum spp) were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (gc-ms). ten of them were characterized by the presence of a high percentage of methyl cinnamate (35-80%), which defined the chemotype for these varieties. only one presented the caryophyllene chemotype and another, the linalool chemotype. three of the basils, "purple ruffles", "little virgin" and "purple virgin" exhibited the methyl cinnamate > linalool subtype. "white compact" and "white ruffles" showed the methyl cinnamate > linalool > 1,8-cineole subtype. methyl cinnamate > methyl eugenol was the subtype for "purple castle". the variety "large green leaves" exhibited the linalool > methyl cinnamate subtype. caryophyllene > methyl eugenol subtype was determined for "clove basil". the rest of the basils "cinnamon", "purple lovingly", "sweet castle" and "purple long-legged", belonged to the methyl cinnamate chemotype in which methyl cinnamate constituted more than 62% of the total essential oil content.

Abstract: Introduction: Sida cordifolia L. (Malvaceae) is a weed about which not much is known in Colombia. This plant is used in folk medicine to treat oral mucosa, blennorrhea, asthma and bronchitis.In Brazil it finds application as an anti-inflammatory,while in Colombia its "baba" is used for treating hair loss, constipation and internal fever, among other ailments. Objectives: to quantify the saponoside content and evaluate its antioxidant and antifungal functionality. Methods: we prepared organic, aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts from the aerial section of the plant. The saponoside material was quantified by the DNS and p-anisaldehyde methods. The most concentrated extracts were selected for antioxidant and antifungal assays. Results: it was found that Sida cordifolia, collected in Ibague-Colombia, is a good source of saponins with diverse chemical structures, mainly of steroidal nature, some of which may be hecogenin, diosgenin or a homologue. Conclusions: these factors may contribute, at least in part, to the antioxidant and antifungal functionality of Sida cordifolia L., but this capacity may be modified if these saponins act independently or together with some other metabolites of the plant such as tannins, flavonoids steroids, and alkaloids among others. Introducción: Sida cordifolia L. (Malvaceae) es una hierba de la cual se tiene un conocimiento limitado en Colombia. Se utiliza en la medicina popular para el tratamiento de la mucosa oral, la blenorragia, el asma y la bronquitis. En Brasil encuentra aplicación como antiinflamatorio, mientras que en Colombia su "baba" se utiliza para tratar la pérdida del cabello, el estre imiento, y la fiebre interna, entre otros padecimientos. Objetivos: cuantificar el contenido saponósido y evaluar sus propiedades antioxidantes y funcionalidad antifúngica. Métodos: se prepararon extractos orgánicos, acuosos e hidroalcohólicos de la parte aérea de la planta. El material de saponósidos se cuantificó por los métodos del DNS (dinitrosalicylic acid reagent) y de p-anisaldehído. Los extractos más concentrados se seleccionaron para los ensayos antioxidante y antifúngico. Resultados: estos mostraron que Sida cordifolia, colectada en Ibague-Colombia, es una buena fuente de saponinas con diversas estructuras químicas, principalmente de naturaleza esteroidal, algunas de las cuales pueden ser hecogenina, diosgenina o un homólogo. Conclusiones: estos factores pueden contribuir, al menos en parte, en la funcionalidad antioxidante y antifúngica de Sida cordifolia L., pero su capacidad se puede modificar si esas saponinas actúan

Abstract: antioxidant activity of aqueous and organics extracts from the leaf and bark of bauhinia kalbreyeri harms it is describes, this plant has been determined by the colombian ethnomedicine as antidiabetic. the extracts were evaluated for their free radical scavenging activity by dpph method. ethanol an aqueous extracts showed the higher dpph radical scavenging activity than 90% in almost all the concentration tested (5-120 mg/ml), the efficient concentrations were low, supported the high inhibitory potential. the reducing power reveled dependence on the extractor solvent and the use of leaf or bark, but independent from the concentration; ethanolic extract of bark exhibited a high reductive potential. ethanolic and aqueous extracts of bark showed greatest phenols amount. the plant can be considered as a good source of natural antioxidants, that could resist the excess of free radicals, hence exert the therapeutic properties attributed, more than act as a hypoglycaemic.

Abstract: mollinedia racemosa, a species collected in yopal-casanare-colombia, has been characterized from the point of view of its phytochemical profile, quantification of some of its secondary metabolites, antioxidant potential, composition and chemical profile of essential oil, antimicrobial activity and acute toxicity. the objective was giving scientific support to the empirical knowledge from colombian indigenous and peasant communities and to contribute to better understanding of this type of plant in colombia. the ethanolic extract of the plant has a high content of phenolic constituents, while volátiles compounds obtained from its leaves have high content of sesquiterpenes. the bioactivity revealed by the plant could be associated to phytophenols, alkaloids and essential oil constituents.

Abstract: a study of antibacterial activity of the diplostephium tolimense cuatrec (asteraceae) vegetal species, which was collected in the paramo of tolima, is presented. this species, as many others of this ecosystem, has had few chemical and pharmacological studies. the simplest fraction with the largest activity against staphylococcus aureus (atcc 25923), is obtained starting from a raw ethanol extract and by means of bioassay guided partition. parallelly, phytochemical analyses to the portions of greater bioactivity, obtained during the whole process, are carried out. it is observed that antibacterial action increases as the chemical simplicity increases and that the presence of terpenes and flavonoids seems to be related with this action. this is the first report, so far well-known, of in vitro antibacterial activity for d. tolimense.

Abstract: En este trabajo se caracterizó la especie Mollinedia racemosa, colectada en Yopal-Casanare-Colombia, desde el punto de vista del perfil fitoquímico, cuantificación de algunos de sus metabolitos secundarios, potencial antioxidante, composición y perfil químico del aceite esencial, de su actividad antimicrobiana y de su toxicidad aguda. Con ello se busca dar soporte científico al conocimiento empírico de comunidades indígenas y campesinas colombianas y para aportar al mejor conocimiento de esta familia vegetal en Colombia. El extracto etanólico de la planta posee un alto contenido de constituyentes fenólicos, en tanto que en los volátiles obtenidos de sus hojas es notable el contenido en sesquiterpenos. La bioactividad revelada por la planta podría estar asociada tanto a los fitofenoles, a sus alcaloides y a los constituyentes de su aceite esencial. Abstract: En este estudio se evaluó la actividad antioxidante de los extractos acuoso y orgánicos de Bauhinia kalbreyeri Harms, reportada por la medicina folclórica Colombiana como antidiabética. Se evaluaron los extractos midiendo su capacidad de captación de radicales libres utilizando el método del 1,1-difenil-2-picrilhidracil (DPPH). Los extractos etanólicos y acuosos, alcanzaron una actividad secuestrante del radical DPPH mayor a 90% en casi todas las concentraciones (5-120 mg/ml); las concentraciones efectivas fueron bajas, confirmando el alto potencial antioxidante. El poder reductor reveló depender del solvente extractor y del uso de hoja o corteza, pero independiente de la concentración; el extracto etanólico de corteza evidenció alto potencial reductor. Los extractos etanólico y acuoso de corteza mostraron la mayor cantidad de fenoles. La planta puede ser considerada una buena fuente de antioxidantes naturales, que podrían contrarrestar el exceso de radicales libres, y así ejercer las propiedades terapéuticas atribuidas, más que actuar como hipoglicemiante. Abstract: Se presenta el estudio de la actividad antibacteriana de la especie vegetal Diplostephium tolimense Cuatrec. (Asteraceae), colectada en el páramo del nevado del Tolima, la cual cuenta con pocos estudios químicos y farmacológicos, al igual que muchas otras especies de este ecosistema. A partir de un extracto etanólico crudo y mediante partición biodirigida se obtiene la fracción más simple de mayor actividad frente a Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923). Paralelamente se realizan análisis fitoquímicos a las porciones de mayor bioactividad obtenidas durante todo el proceso. Se observa que la acción antibacteriana se incrementa al aumentar la simplicidad química del extracto y que terpenos y flavonoides parecen estar relacionados con la acción revelada. Se trata del primer reporte, hasta la fecha conocido, de actividad antibacteriana in vitro para D. tolimense. POTENCIAL ANTIOXIDANTE DE RESIDUOS AGROINDUSTRIALES DE TRES FRUTAS DE ALTO CONSUMO EN EL TOLIMA

Abstract: Este trabajo evaluó las propiedades antioxidantes de los residuos agroindustriales de mora de castilla (Rubus glaucus), maracuyá (Passiflora edulis) y tomate de árbol (Cyphomandra betacea), tres frutas de alto consumo en el Tolima mediante la determinación de la capacidad antiradical (ABTS y DPPH), Capacidad Antioxidante Total Hidrosoluble, Poder Reductor Férrico y Actividad Antinitrosativa. Los resultados fueron contrastados con el contenido fenólico total y de pigmentos antociánicos de cada uno de los subproductos estudiados, mostrando a los residuos de R. glaucus como el material con mayor aporte de compuestos antioxidantes.
