Abstract: objectives: identify and analyze anemia knowledge and practices of daycare center providers. methods: study performed in a public daycare center for low income families living in the outskirts of the city of s?o paulo. the majority of the children was seen in the health clinic of the daycare center for over six months and came from low income families. all 15 care providers were high school graduates. the interviews were taped, transcribed and submitted to content analysis. results: care providers'knowledge and practices stemmed from common sense and day to day experience. many had wrong concepts with potential harm in terms of care provision. their perception was that anemia control and prevention depended on "parents education", a perspective that could interfere with the care providers/parents relationship in a sense that the problems are of a social nature and do not depend exclusively on family care. some identified anemic children and attempted to help but the majority transferred the responsibility to healthcare professionals and did not feel they were related to care giving practices and conditions. conclusions: there is a need to educate care providers on anemia and the care of this condition, not only in initial training programs as well as in ongoing training programs.
Associated aspects to the age at sexual initiation among adolescents: a quantitative study
Ana Luiza Vilela Borges,Elizabeth Fujimori
Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing , 2008,
Abstract: using survival analysis, we analyzed data from 363 both female and male 15 to 19 year-old adolescents enrolled in a family health unit in the east area of s o paulo city. they filled a self-administered structured questionnaire at home in may 2007. results showed an statistical difference in the age of sexual initiation between women and men (15,2 and 14,3 years of age, respectively). sexual life onset showed to be an event that does not occur in a linear way during adolescence, but a gradual phenomenon that takes place from a specific age. multiple cox regression showed that variables associated to the age at sexual initiation among women were working as well as relating a non-rigid mother concerning to dating. variable associated to the age at sexual initiation among men was agreeing to the sentence “man can have sex no matter what because can’t become pregnant”. It was concluded that cultural, relational and demographical aspects can influence sexual initiation among adolescents.

Abstract: rice and bean diets increase hepatic and plasmatic activity of gammaglutamyltranspeptidase in growing rats. the effect of feeding rice and bean diets in both hepatic and plasmatic activity of gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase-(ggt-ec 2.3.2.2) activity was evaluated in growing-rats (experiment a) and mature rats (experiment b). during 28 days, the animals were fed with isocaloric-diets composed by tree levels of rice, bean or rice-and-bean protein. similarly with the aproteic group, a significant increase on both the hepatic and plasmatic ggt activity were showed with the lowest leves of protein, when compared with 25% casein control group. this rise was more effective in growing-rats fed on legume-based diets (as bean or rice-and-bean diets), making evident a differential effect of age and an exacerbated effect of the protein restriction with the lowest sulfur amino acids disposal. these alterations suggest a metabolic adaptation of ggt to both the inadequate protein and sulfur-amino acid levels, thus supporting the hypothesis that the glutathione levels may be reduced by these legume-based diets.

Abstract: improving family and community practices is one of the components of the strategy integrated management of childhood illness (imci). considering that in brazil, imci is being implemented in the context of family health program (psf), the objective of this study was to identify maternal knowledge in relation to care provided to child with respiratory disease or diarrhea in two health units with different assistance models, with psf and without psf. the results showed that the level of maternal/familiar knowledge were similar in both assistance models. under a scientific point of view, the mothers/families showed overshot knowledge in relation to care provided to child with diarrhea. the finding show that mother and caretaker communication need to improve, even health units with psf.

Abstract: having the basic principle of comprehensiveness as one of the main aspects for a healthcare attendance, the patient health record was pointed as an indicator of reality. the objective was to analyze patient health record from two different healthcare units with different healthcare models. one of the healthcare units organized its model on traditional basis (without-fhp) and the other based on "family health program" (with-fhp). 194 child files under 5 years old were analysed. it was observed that the fhp unit records were more frequent, favoring a better comprehension of the health-disease process, the professional integration and a periodic follow-up of the child, promoting a continuous assistance, and as a consequence, a comprehensiveness attendance.

Revista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem , 1996, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-11691996000300005
Abstract: it was studied an equiprobabilistic sample of 262 female teenagers living in the city of tabo?o da serra, brazil, with the aim of evaluating the prevalence of anemia and iron-deficiency. anemia was identified by the hemoglobin level and the prevalence of iron-deficiency was determined through the concentration of free erythrocyte protoporphyrin. it was observed a prevalence of 17,6% of anemia, and its occurrence was inversely related to factors indicative of the economic-social level: income, schooling of parents and home's characteristics. the presence of anemia was higher in the group that did not have reached menarche, and its occurrence did not show relation with the interval between menstrual cycle. the prevalence of iron-deficiency was of 29,4% and it was not verified correlation between the bloody hemoglobin and the free erythrocyte protoporphyrin, except in severe cases of anemia.

Abstract: this qualitative study aimed to investigate the issues involved in establishing and maintaining exclusive breastfeeding from the women's perspective. it was conducted with 12 mothers of infants less than six months of age who were attended at a primary healthcare unit. semistructured interviews were recorded, transcribed and subjected to content analysis, which revealed the following categories: nipple trauma; free demand; "weak breast milk"; breastfeeding women's psychological health; previous breastfeeding experience; breastfeeding and women's multiple roles; and influence of close people. establishment of exclusive breastfeeding was associated with experiences and perceptions about breast milk sufficiency, thereby causing concern and insecurity. close people, especially family members, influenced the establishment and maintenance of exclusive breastfeeding, as did women's work overload inside and outside home. knowledge of issues that facilitate or hinder establishment and maintenance of breastfeeding is essential for guiding health professionals' actions.

Abstract: the objective of this study was to estimate the frequency of breastfeeding and to identify variables associated with median breastfeeding length. it is a cross-sectional population-based study carried out in a representative sample of 261 children under 2 years old randomly selected in the urban area of itupeva city, sp, brazil. the breastfeeding patterns recommended by who were used. the frequency and the median length of breastfeeding were estimated by life tables technique. the wilcoxon test was used to identify association between breastfeeding and the categorical variables (p<0.05) in the bivariate analysis. for the multivariate analysis, the variables associated with the breastfeeding length (wilcoxon test; p<0.10) were inserted in a cox regression model. almost 100% of the children have initiated breastfeeding and 41.0% were in breastfeeding at the moment of the interview. the median length of breastfeeding was 7.2 months and exclusive breastfeeding was only 28 days. it was observed association between the breastfeeding length and the following variables: father?s schooling, mother?s marital status, number of children, sequence of birth, bottle-feeding and pacifier use. the cox regression model selected as significant variables: sequence of birth (hr=1.68; ic95%=1.03-2.73), bottle-feeding use (hr=15.20; ic95%=3.69-62.01) and pacifier use (hr=2.84; ic95%=1.95-4.19). the current pattern of breastfeeding in itupeva is still far from the who recommendations; therefore, encouragement and support to breastfeeding need to be intensified. variables influencing breastfeeding should be considered in the attempt to increase breastfeeding. health workers should dedicate all their efforts to increase the exclusive breastfeeding period in children under 6 months of age and increase the total breastfeeding period.

Abstract: this study investigated contraceptive practices and especially the use of emergency contraception by 487 young students at a public university in s?o paulo state. a structured questionnaire was sent by e-mail and completed online in december 2007. contraceptive methods and use of emergency contraception were investigated. female and male students reported a high proportion of contraceptive use, mainly condoms and the pill. half of the students had already used emergency contraception, often when already using some other highly effective method. among female students, multiple regression analysis showed that current age, age at sexual initiation, not having used condoms in sexual relations, condom failure, and knowing someone that has used emergency contraception were associated with use of the latter. the option for emergency contraception proved to be more closely related to inconsistencies in the use of regular methods than to lack of their use, and can thus be considered a marker for discontinuity in regular contraception.
