ABSTRACT Identification of clerodane diterpenes in different organs of Casearia sylvestris Swartz Casearia sylvestris Swartz (Salicaceae) is a tree or shrub distributed widely in Brazil, where it is used in popular medicine. Several bioactive clerodane diterpenes typical of Casearia have been isolated from this species (e.g. casearins and casearvestrins). The main objective of this study was to identify clerodane diterpenes in various organs of C. sylvestris, using chromatographic and spectroscopic analytical techniques. The extracts of the different plant parts were analyzed by thin layer chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance. In the chromatographic analysis, clerodane diterpenes isolated from C. sylvestris were used as standards, including rel-19Sacetóxi- 18R- butanoilóxi-18,19- epóxi -6S -hidróxi -2R- (2-metilbutanoilóxi) -5S, 8R, 9R, 10S -cleroda-3,13(16),14- triene, isolated for the first time from the stems. Phytochemical profiles of the organs were produced, which indicated the presence of clerodane diterpenes in all parts of the plant, notably

Abstract: introduction: arterial hypertension is a worldwide public health problem and one of the major risk factors for chronic kidney disease development. methods: in order to compare the cockcroft-gault (cg) equation with serum creatinine and 24-hour creatinine clearance (crcl) for the screening of reduced renal function, a cross-sectional study of 198 hypertensive patients was undertaken at a basic health unit. the demographic, nutritional, and clinical laboratory data were analyzed. renal function was assessed by serum creatinine and 24hour crcl. glomerular filtration rate (gfr) was also estimated according to cockcroft-gault equation. results: the patients had a mean age of 60.6 ± 11.6 years-old, and 73.7% were female. the prevalence of serum creatinine > 1.2 mg/dl was 7.6% and the prevalence of gfr < 60 ml/minute was 24.2%, when evaluated by the crcl and cg equation. reduced gfr was observed in older male patients, with lower body mass index, normal values of fasting blood glucose, and higher levels of serum uric acid and of systolic blood pressure. discussion: the prevalence of decreased renal function among hypertensive patients varies considerably, depending on the laboratory investigation used. cg-estimated crcl has shown to be more accurate than serum creatinine for assessing gfr. conclusions: cg-estimated crcl was highly similar to 24-hour crcl, proving to be a reliable primary care screening test for the early diagnosis of renal impairment in hypertensives.

Journal of Power and Energy Engineering (JPEE) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/jpee.2018.611003
Abstract: This paper aims to evaluate the diesel oil consumption between 2008 and 2015 in the production of iron ore in Brazil, creating correlations between energy intensity (production), economy and checking the impact of fuel prices on the commodity. During the analyzed period, the years 2008-2009 indicated economic crises, which interfered in the price and the commercialization of iron ore products. The physical intensity was 0.2% higher than the economic intensity. In the period from 2010 to 2014, economic activity remained more stable, with a decreasing trend, mainly due to the increase of iron ore prices. The physical intensity is much higher than the economic intensity influenced by the expansion of the Chinese economy. The year of 2014 indicated the end of the high iron ore price cycle and the beginning of supply and demand stabilization with consequent reduction in prices. In 2015, the market entered the stabilization phase, with a continuous reduction in unit production costs and transportation logistics. There was an abrupt change due to the strong increase of the economic intensity due to the fall of the international prices of iron ore. The diesel oil consumption plays a vital role in the scenario of cost reduction in iron ore production and a deeper analysis must be done in order to discover some options to change the energy matrix.

Abstract: the c677t polymorphism in the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene (mthfr) is associated with an increase in total homocysteine serum levels (thcy), described as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. eight hundred forty-three neonates from two different maternity hospitals, one public and another private, in salvador, bahia, brazil were screened for this polymorphism by pcr and rflp. the t-allele frequency in the total sample was 0.23, and the prevalence rates of heterozygous and homozygous carriers were 36.2% and 5.3%, respectively. the t-allele frequency differed and the t/t genotype was more prevalent at the private maternity hospital. the hemoglobin (hb) profile was investigated by hplc in 763 newborns. the frequency of variant hb was higher at the public than at the private maternity hospital. the association of the c677t polymorphism and the hb profile was investigated in 683 newborns, showing a relatively high frequency of variant hbs and the t allele. these data could provide an important basis for further studies focusing on potential risks of vaso-occlusive events in these individuals.
TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME
BERGDOLL, M. S.;
Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-79301997000100002
Abstract: toxic shock syndrome is a staphylococcal disease caused by toxins produced by the staphylococci, toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 and enterotoxin b. the disease results from staphylococci growing in the vagina with the use of tampons during menstruation, primarily in young women. however, any staphylococcal infection can result in toxic shock syndrome if the staphylococci produce the appropriate toxins and the individual has no antibodies to the toxins. the symptoms can be quite severe, with high fever, low blood pressure, diffuse macular erythroderma, orthostatic dizziness, vomiting and or diarrhea at the onset, severe myalgia, peeling of the skin of the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet after seven to ten days, and death in some cases. the disease is not contagious as it is necessary for the toxin producing organisms to infect a cut or incision or be inserted into the vagina with a tampon. a high percentage of individuals have protective antibody titers to the toxins, with the percentage of individuals with titers increasing with age. anyone colonized with a toxin-producing staphylococci will have a protective antibody titer. the source of the disease causing staphylococci is difficult to determine although it can be transferred from other family members or from a surgeon during operations. the disease is more or less accidental. the toxins are classed as superantigens because they react with many more t-cells than do conventional antigens. they stimulate the production of cytokines which may be directly involved in toxic shock syndrome.
