Revista Educa??o Especial , 2004,

Adsorption of Anionic Dyes on the Biopolymer Chitin
Longhinotti Elisane,Pozza Fabíola,Furlan Lígia,Sanchez Maria de Nazaré de M.
Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society , 1998,
Abstract: The adsorption of the anionic dyes orange IV, orange G and xylenol orange on chitin was studied, employing the Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption parameters were determined utilizing various linear regressions of the isotherm. The results showed that the adsorption capacity is dependent on pH. In acid pH, the polymer amino groups are protonated and the polymer chain is positively charged, with a predominance of adsorption through ion exchange. Van der Waals adsorption, as well as adsorption through hydrogen bonding, is also likely to occur to some extent. For xylenol orange, a linear regression was found, with an angular coefficient of 0.726 L mg-1. The temperature increase reduces adsorption capacity by chitin, due to the enhancement of the desorption step in the mechanism. deltaH values of -10.9 kJ mol-1 for orange G and -28.9 kJ mol-1 for orange IV prove the physical nature of the adsorption by these dyes on the chitin surface.
Resistance of Microorganisms to Extreme Environmental Conditions and Its Contribution to Astrobiology
Pabulo Henrique Rampelotto
Sustainability , 2010, DOI: 10.3390/su2061602
Abstract: In the last decades, substantial changes have occurred regarding what scientists consider the limits of habitable environmental conditions. For every extreme environmental condition investigated, a variety of microorganisms have shown that not only can they tolerate these conditions, but that they also often require these extreme conditions for survival. Microbes can return to life even after hundreds of millions of years. Furthermore, a variety of studies demonstrate that microorganisms can survive under extreme conditions, such as ultracentrifugation, hypervelocity, shock pressure, high temperature variations, vacuums, and different ultraviolet and ionizing radiation intensities, which simulate the conditions that microbes could experience during the ejection from one planet, the journey through space, as well as the impact in another planet. With these discoveries, our knowledge about the biosphere has grown and the putative boundaries of life have expanded. The present work examines the recent discoveries and the principal advances concerning the resistance of microorganisms to extreme environmental conditions, and analyzes its contributions to the development of the main themes of astrobiology: the origins of life, the search for extraterrestrial life, and the dispersion of life in the Universe.
Extremophiles and Extreme Environments
Pabulo Henrique Rampelotto
Life , 2013, DOI: 10.3390/life3030482
Abstract: Over the last decades, the study of extremophiles has providing ground breaking discoveries that challenge the paradigms of modern biology and make us rethink intriguing questions such as "what is life?", "what are the limits of life?", and "what are the fundamental features of life?". These findings and possibilities have made the study of life in extreme environments one of the most exciting areas of research in recent decades. However, despite the latest advances we are just in the beginning of exploring and characterizing the world of extremophiles. This special issue discusses several aspects of these fascinating organisms, exploring their habitats, biodiversity, ecology, evolution, genetics, biochemistry, and biotechnological applications in a collection of exciting reviews and original articles written by leading experts and research groups in the field.

Abstract: to assess the tidal volume (vt), minute volume (mv) and respiratory rate (rr) of morbidly obese women in postoperative bariatric surgery (bs), after the conventional respiratory physiotherapy (crp) with or without preoperatively continuous positive airway pressure (cpap). thirty-six women, aged 40.1±8.41 years, that would be submitted to bs by laparotomy were studied. all of them underwent preoperative outpatient conventional respiratory physiotherapy (crp) (diaphragmatic breathing exercises, deep breathing, fractionated breathing and breathing associated to movements of the upper limbs, a series of 10 repetitions of each exercise) by 30 days. once admitted, 18 were subjected to 20 minutes of cpap, an hour before induction of anesthesia and composed group crp+cpap. the other 18 did not receive cpap and composed group crp. vt, mv, and rr were performed through the ventilometer, at admission and 24 hours after surgery. it was found that measures of tv, vm and rr were not statistically significant when comparing pre and postoperative in both groups and as well as when the two groups were compared between them in both pre and postoperative. the results suggest that both the application and the implementation of frc and frc+cpap in the preoperative period contribute to the maintenance of respiratory variables in the postoperative period. the use of cpap before induction of anesthesia, did not provide additional benefits in the post-bariatric surgery with regard to the volumes.
