The objective of the experiment was to study the effects of replacing corn silage (CS) with cassava foliage silage (CFS) – using the upperthird of the foliage – on intake and nutrient digestibility. Twelve lactating dairy cows were used in a randomized block design to evaluated intake and digestibility. The levels of replacement of CS with CFS were 0, 20, 40 and 60%. The parameters studied were: drymatter intake (DMI), organic matter intake (OMI), neutral detergent fiber intake (NDFI), indigestible neutral detergent fiber intake (INDFI), apparent digestibility of dry matter (ADDM), apparent digestibility of organic matter (ADOM), apparent digestibility of crude protein (ADCP), apparent digestibility of neutral detergent fiber (ADNDF), apparent digestibility of total carbohydrates (ADTC) and apparent digestibility of non-fiber carbohydrates (ADNFC). The replacement of CS with different levels of the upper third ofcassava foliage silage (CFS) had no effect in practically any of evaluated variables (p > 0.05). However, ADCP (p < 0.01) decreased as the levels of replacement were increased. The inclusion of CFS did not alter the intake or digestibility of nutrients, except for ADCP. In spite of the negative effect on the apparent digestibility of protein, CFS can partially replace CS in the diet of lactating dairy cows.

Acta Scientiarum : Animal Sciences , 2011,
The objective of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of the grass and extrusa from Girolanda heifers, under three stocking rates on grass pasture of Brachiaria decumbens Stapf., at different evaluation periods. Six Girolanda heifers were used, and treatmentsconsisted of different stocking rates (2, 4 and 6 UA). Each block was formed by three paddocks. The design was a randomized blocks design in split-plot with repeated measures over time. The bite rate of the animals varied according to assessment period, with values of 41 bites min.-1 (Period 1) and 33 bites min.-1 (Period 3). Bite rate decreased over the grazing period, with values from 41 to 33 bit min-1. Bite size was larger in grazing periods 2 and 3, at the stocking rate of 2 UA (0.40 and 0.43 g DM bite-1). Extrusa dry matter was higher in the third (15.0% DM) and second (17.4% DM) days of grazing. An increase in crude protein content of extusa occurred in the third grazing period (14.4%) and for total neutral detergent fiber (75.3%).

The aim of the experiment was to evaluate the intake and digestibility of Holsteins dairy cow fed with Cynodon graze and inclusion levels (0, 10, 20 e 30%) of superior third of cassava foliage silage (STCFS). Eight lactating dairy cow were used in a square design 4x4 and to inclusion levels, regression was used. Thefollowing aspects were analyzed: organic matter intake (OMI), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), crude protein (CP), total carbohydrate (TC), nonfiber carbohydrate (NFC); apparent digestibility of organic matter (ADOM), crude protein (ADCP), neutral detergent fiber (ADNDF), total carbohydrate (ADTC), nonfiber carbohydrate (ADNFC). The inclusion levels of STCFS had an increasing effect (P<0.05) to total OMI, STCFS + concentrate DOI, STCFS + concentrate NDF, total CP, total TC, total NFC in kg/day and total OMI and total % live weight. The ADCP had decreasing effect (P<0.05) with the increase of inclusion levels ofSTCFS.

Acta Scientiarum : Animal Sciences , 2009,
The objective of this trial was to analyze milk production, milk composition, fatty acid profile, physiological parameters, and behavior of Pitangueiras cows under grazing conditions and submitted to the presence or absence of shade in the paddock. The environment was monitored daily using a meteorological station at the research site. A complete randomized experimental design was used and 20 lactating cows were allocated in paddocks with or without shade. Daily milk productivity did not differ among cows. There was also no difference in the fatty acid profile and milk composition. Cows with shade available stayed under the shade during periods where thermal comfort index was greater. Physiological responses did not showsignificant differences; however, differences were observed between morning and afternoon periods, with greater values observed for the afternoon period. The use of artificial shade favored animal weight gain and long-chain fatty acid profile under high thermal comfortindex. In this condition, the shade to Pitangueiras cows breed is advised.
