Abstract: objective: to evaluate the contribution of abdominal ultrasound in the follow-up of a group of post-treatment breast cancer patients. material and methods: we retrospectively studied the findings of abdominal ultrasound examinations of 100 patients treated for primary breast cancer. these patients were attended from january to december of 1997 at the ultrasound sector, division of radiology of the department of clinical medicine of the "faculdade de medicina de ribeir?o preto da universidade de s?o paulo", sp, brazil. information such as age, histological type, staging, number of examinations and ultrasound findings were rated and analyzed. results: abdominal ultrasound was normal in 70% of the patients whereas liver metastases were diagnosed in 3% of the patients. conclusion: the majority of the abnormalities identified were not directly related to complications of breast cancer.

Abstract: magnetic resonance imaging has become the first choice imaging method for the evaluation of the joints due to its exceptional tissue differentiation, high resolution, multiplanar images and kinematics studies. the knee is probably the most common joint evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging and the knowledge of anatomy, physiology and imaging features is essential for an accurate interpretation of these studies. however, anatomical structures that are only observed sporadically, normal variants and artifacts may sometimes make it difficult to interpret these examinations. the purpose of this article is to review the most frequent pitfalls of magnetic resonance imaging of the knee, discuss their causes and how to avoid them.

Santos, Marcel Koenigkam;Elias Júnior, Jorge;Mauad, Fernando Marum;Muglia, Valdair Francisco;Trad, Clóvis Sim?o;
Jornal Brasileiro de Pneumologia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1806-37132011000200016
Abstract: the objective of the present review study was to present the principal applications of magnetic resonance imaging (mri) of the chest, including the description of new techniques. over the past decade, this method has evolved considerably because of the development of new equipment, including the simultaneous interconnection of phased-array multiple radiofrequency receiver coils and remote control of the table movement, in addition to faster techniques of image acquisition, such as parallel imaging and partial fourier acquisitions, as well as the introduction of new contrast agents. all of these advances have allowed mri to gain ground in the study of various pathologies of the chest, including lung diseases. currently, mri is considered the modality of choice for the evaluation of lesions in the mediastinum and in the chest wall, as well as of superior sulcus tumors. however, it can also facilitate the diagnosis of lung, pleural, and cardiac diseases, as well as of those related to the pulmonary vasculature. pulmonary mri angiography can be used in order to evaluate various pulmonary vascular diseases, and it has played an ever greater role in the study of thromboembolism. because cardiac mri allows morphological and functional assessment in the same test, it has also become part of the clinical routine in the evaluation of various cardiac diseases. finally, the role of mri has been extended to the identification and characterization of pulmonary nodules, the evaluation of airway diseases, and the characterization of pleural effusion.
Computed tomographic patterns of orbital cellulitis due to sinusitis
Pereira, Filipe José;Cruz, Antonio Augusto Velasco e;Anselmo-Lima, Wilma Teresinha;Elias Júnior, Jorge;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492006000400011
Abstract: purpose: to describe the ct findings of orbital cellulitis due to sinusitis. methods: the records and ct scans of 45 consecutive patients with orbital cellulitis due to sinusitis treated at the hospital of the medical school of ribeir?o preto were analyzed by a radiologist and two orbital surgeons. results: three major types of ct changes were observed: diffuse fat infiltration, subperiosteal abscess and orbital abscess. diffuse fat infiltration (characterized by an increased density of the extra- or intraconal fat) was seen in 11 patients (24.44%). a subperiosteal abscess was diagnosed in 28 patients (62.23%). a surgically proved orbital abscess was detected in 6 patients (13.33%). conclusions: in all cases of orbital cellulitis due to sinusitis intraorbital changes can be detected by ct scans either as a diffuse infiltration of the orbital fat or as a detachment of the periorbita (subperiosteal abscess) or a true orbital abscess. category i of chandler orbital cellulitis classification (inflammatory edema) must be understood as a stage of a process that is already happening within the orbit and, as the term "preseptal cellulitis" means a palpebral infection, this designation should not be used to stage orbital cellulitis.

Abstract: snapping syndromes occur during certain movements in several joints and may be accompanied by local pain and crepitation or audible snapping sensation. snapping joints may eventually have no pathologic significance and in this case no treatment is required. there is an array of intra- and extra-articular causes of snapping syndrome and the lack of precise clinical findings impairs the definition of the most appropriate imaging method to confirm the diagnosis. the present study is aimed at discussing the most frequent causes of snapping syndrome in different joints, emphasizing the indications and limitations of each of the different diagnostic methods in specific situations of the clinical practice.

Abstract: paraquat is a nonselective contact herbicide of great toxicological importance, being associated with high mortality rates, mainly due to respiratory failure. we report the case of a 22-year-old male admitted to the emergency room with a sore throat, dysphagia, hemoptysis, and retrosternal pain after the ingestion of 50 ml of a paraquat solution, four days prior to admission. chest ct scans revealed pulmonary opacities, pneumomediastinum, pneumothorax, and subcutaneous emphysema. the patient was submitted to two cycles of immunosuppressive therapy with cyclophosphamide, methylprednisolone, and dexamethasone. the pulmonary gas exchange parameters gradually improved, and the patient was discharged four weeks later. the clinical and tomographic follow-up evaluations performed at four months after discharge showed that there had been further clinical improvement. we also present a brief review of the literature, as well as a discussion of the therapeutic algorithm for severe paraquat poisoning.
