Effect of various penetration enhancers concentrations on diclafenac sodium release from cellulose acetate phthalate polymeric film

Abstract: An investigation was conducted to evaluate the influence of different penetration enhancers in various concentrations on the release of diclofenac sodium (DFS) as a water-soluble drug from Cellulose acetate phthalate polymeric films containing 50% w/w PEG 600 as plasticizer, to choose the most appropriate enhancer and its optimum concentration to be used to achieve the maximum release and permeation of the drug. The addition of various enhancers, as isopropylmyristate (IPM; 0.2_5% w/w), oleic acid (OA; 0.2_5% w/w) and linoleic acid (LOA; 0.2_5% w/w), Tween 80 (T80;1_10% w/w) and transcutol, (TC; 1_10% w/w) enhanced the DFS release from the polymeric films. The enhancement ratio of the penetration enhancers used in the formulation of DFS were found to increase in the order of IPM>LOA>OA>T80>TC. (56.2, 54.1, 50, 48.7 and 48%, respectively). In vitro permeation studies were performed using rabbit abdominal skin as the permeating membrane. The results indicated that maximum permeation was obtained at 24hrs (0.5% IPM, 0.2% LOA, 1% OA, 0.5% T80 and 10% TC, increased skin permeation of DFS by 4.46, 4.06, 3.37, 1.65 and 1.49 time, respectively). IPM was found to be the most efficient enhancer. The results obtained from ANOVA test indicate that the difference in drug permeation rates is highly significant compared to the control formulation (P<0.05). The mechanism of drug release from the polymeric films obey Higuchi′s model.
Mutagenic Potential of Imazethapyr Herbicide (Pursuit) on Vicia faba in the Presence of Urea Fertilizer

Abstract: Imazethapyr herbicide (pursuit) singly or combined with urea fertilizer on mitotic activity, inducation of mitotic and meiotic abnormalities and changes in the M2 seed storage protein banding patterns has been investigated on Vicia faba plants. A significant reduction in mitotic index was induced after different treatment in both forms (singly or combined). A variety of chromosomal abnormalities were observed in both mitotic and meiotic divisions respresented by stickiness, disturbance, laggards, bridges, multipolar, C-metaphase, breaks and micro and multinuclei. The frequency of these types of abnormalities decrease in case of pursuit herbicide combined with urea fertilizer. Electrophoretic analysis showed that pursuit and its combination with urea has a great ability to induce changes in the protein banding patterns of Vicia faba seed storage protein as compared with untreated samples being more pronounced in treatment with the herbicide singly.
Simple Analysis Used in Diagnosis and Follow-up of Schizophrenic Patients

Abstract: Dopamine acts as neurotransmitter in the central and peripheral sympathetic nervous system. Determination of dopamine (DO) was performed by spectrophotometric analysis depending on the formation of new colored compound. The proposed procedure was efficient in quantitative determination of DO as pure material in pharmaceutical preparations and in urine samples. DO concentration in urine sample of patient confirms the affection with schizophrenia and the proposed procedure was used to facilitate diagnosis and followup of schizophrenic patients. It is recommended to apply the proposed procedures as routine analysis in pharmaceutical companies for quality control and in analytical laboratories to diagnose and follow up schizophrenia.
Renal Osteodystrophy: Review of the Disease and its Treatment

Abstract: Renal osteodystrophy (ROD), which is most evident in patients on renal replacement therapy (RRT), usually begins when the kidney function starts to deteriorate. The spectrum of skeletal abnormalities seen in ROD is classified according to the state of bone turnover. In the past two decades, the prevalence of high turnover ROD has decreased while low bone turnover has become increasingly recognized. Secondary hyperparathyroidism represents a common disorder in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD); it develops as a result of hyperphosphatemia, hypocalcemia and impaired synthesis of renal vitamin D with reduction in serum calcitriol levels. Patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism have a range of symptoms that affect their quality of life. The aim of treatment of ROD is to reduce the incidence of uremic bone disease as well as cardiovascular morbidity and mortality caused by elevated serum levels of parathormone (PTH) and calcium X phosphorus product. Treatment measures include control of phosphorus retention and prevent hyperphosphatemia, maintaining serum calcium concentrations within the normal range and prevent excess PTH secretion.
Sparse Representation Approach for Variation-Robust Face Recognition Using Discrete Wavelet Transform

Abstract: Face recognition has become one of the most challenging tasks in the pattern recognition field and it is very important for many applications such as: video surveillance, forensic applications criminal investigations, and in many other fields it is also very useful. In this paper we are using sparse representation approach based on discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to achieve more robustness to variation in lighting, directions and expressions, because sparse representation does not exterminate obstacles posed by several practical issues, such as lighting, pose, and especially facial expressions, which tend to distort almost all the features and can thus compromise the accuracy of sparse representation. The result of new proposed approach is compared with sparse representation approach to show that the proposed approach is more robust to illumination, direction and expression variations than sparse representation.
Karyological Studies on the Solanaceae

Abstract: Comparative karyological studies for 23 taxa of the Solanaceae have been presented and their taxonomic aspects are discussed. It was concluded that the origin of the family is a taxon with basic chronomosome number of x = 7 or 8 which gave rise to other taxa by aneuplodiy and polyploidy. Nictiana alata and Browallia viscosa are found to be less evolved than the other species studied. Concerning the total form percentage (TF%) a reverse trend towards increasing the degree of karyotype symmetry with advancing evolution is concluded.

Abstract: The 2-aryl-6,8-dibromo-4-chloroquinazolines derived from the 2-aryl-6,8-dibromoquinazolin-4(3 H)-ones were subjected to the Sonogashira cross-coupling with terminal acetylenes at room temperature to afford novel 2-aryl-6,8-dibromo-4-(alkynyl)quinazoline derivatives. Further transformation of the 2-aryl-6,8-dibromo-4-(phenylethynyl)quinazolines via Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling with arylboronic acids occurred without selectivity to afford the corresponding 2,6,8-triaryl-4-(phenylethynyl)quinazolines. The absorption and emission properties of these polysubstituted quinazolines were also determined.
Natural History of Progression of Chronic Kidney Disease in Stages 4 and 5

Abstract: Introduction: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) often continue to progress spontaneously towards end stage renal disease (ESRD). In this report we studied the natural history of progression of CKD in a cohort of patients with stage 4 and 5 CKD. Methods: We retrospectively studied a cohort of patients in stage 4 and 5 CKD who started their follow up at Sheffield Kidney Institute in the period between January 1999 and July 2004. The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was estimated using the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) formula. The rate of estimated GFR decline was correlated to different demographic, clinical and laboratory data. Results: The study group consisted of 152 patients aged 24-89 years. The mean fall of estimated GFR in stage 4 and stage 5 CKD was 2.3 and 1.7 ml/min/year, respectively. Overall, 66.4% of patients progressed towards ESRD with a rate of GFR decline exceeding 1ml/min/year. Male gender and use of sodium bicarbonate were significantly commoner among progressors compared to non-progressors (60.4% versus 47.1% and 45.5% versus 33.3% respectively, P<0.05). Progressors had significantly lower mean age (61±14 versus 67±14 years, P=0.04), higher urinary protein excretion (2.4±2.4 versus 1.4±1.6 g/day, P =0.002), higher calcium-phosphorus product (42.7±9.2 versus 37.5±8.3 mg2/dl2, P= 0.00), lower serum bicarbonate level (23.7±2.9 versus 25.3±3.4 mmol/l, P=0.004) and lower serum cholesterol level (201±35 versus 212±46 mg/dl, P=0.03) compared to non-progressors. Logistic regression analysis confirmed low baseline serum bicarbonate level and high urinary protein excretion as independent predictors of progression to ESRD. Conclusion: Low serum bicarbonate level and high urinary protein excretion at baseline are independent predictors of progression in stage 4 and 5 CKD.
Robust Facial Expression Recognition via Sparse Representation and Multiple Gabor filters

Abstract: Facial expressions recognition plays important role in human communication. It has become one of the most challenging tasks in the pattern recognition field. It has many applications such as: human computer interaction, video surveillance, forensic applications, criminal investigations, and in many other fields. In this paper we propose a method for facial expression recognition (FER). This method provides new insights into two issues in FER: feature extraction and robustness. For feature extraction we are using sparse representation approach after applying multiple Gabor filter and then using support vector machine (SVM) as classifier. We conduct extensive experiments on standard facial expressions database to verify the performance of proposed method. And we compare the result with other approach.
