Abstract: This thesis presents an investigation of meson and baryon properties in the framework of covariant bound-state equations based on the Dyson-Schwinger equations of QCD. Pion and rho-meson, diquark, nucleon and delta-baryon masses are obtained as self-consistent solutions of the respective equations for $q\bar{q}$, $qq$, $qqq$ and $q(qq)$ systems. The common parenthesis is given by a rainbow-ladder truncation in the quark-(anti-)quark channel. It includes an effective quark-gluon coupling as the only phenomenological input and inherent link in the calculation of meson and baryon observables. Results for hadron masses and the pion's and nucleon's static electromagnetic properties as a function of a self-consistently calculated pion mass are presented and compared to lattice results and their chiral extrapolations. The evolution of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors with larger photon momentum is investigated. The impact of further contributions beyond rainbow-ladder, e.g. pionic corrections, and possible future applications are discussed.
Nucleon electromagnetic form factors from the covariant Faddeev equation

Abstract: We compute the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon in the Poincare-covariant Faddeev framework based on the Dyson-Schwinger equations of QCD. The general expression for a baryon's electromagnetic current in terms of three interacting dressed quarks is derived. Upon employing a rainbow-ladder gluon-exchange kernel for the quark-quark interaction, the nucleon's Faddeev amplitude and electromagnetic form factors are computed without any further truncations or model assumptions. The form factor results show clear evidence of missing pion-cloud effects below a photon momentum transfer of ~2 GeV^2 and in the chiral region whereas they agree well with experimental data at higher photon momenta. Thus, the approach reflects the properties of the nucleon's quark core.
Baryon form factors from Dyson-Schwinger equations

Abstract: I briefly summarize the application of the Dyson-Schwinger/Faddeev approach to baryon form factors. Recent results for nucleon electromagnetic and axial form factors as well as N-Delta-Gamma electromagnetic transition form factors are discussed. The calculation of the current diagrams from the quark-gluon level enables an analysis of common features, such as the implications of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and quark orbital angular momentum, the timelike structure of the form factors, and their interpretation in terms of missing pion-cloud effects.
Probing nucleons with photons at the quark level

Abstract: The description of electromagnetic interactions with hadrons from the quark level requires knowledge of the underlying quark-gluon ingredients. I discuss some properties of the quark-photon vertex and quark Compton vertex, along with the role of electromagnetic gauge invariance and vector-meson dominance. A simple parametrization for the quark-photon vertex is given.
Extraembryonic Origin of Circulating Endothelial Cells

Abstract: Circulating endothelial cells (CEC) are contained in the bone marrow and peripheral blood of adult humans and participate to the revascularization of ischemic tissues. These cells represent attractive targets for cell or gene therapy aimed at improving ischemic revascularization or inhibition of tumor angiogenesis. The embryonic origin of CEC has not been addressed previously. Here we use quail-chick chimeras to study CEC origin and participation to the developing vasculature. CEC are traced with different markers, in particular the QH1 antibody recognizing only quail endothelial cells. Using yolk-sac chimeras, where quail embryos are grafted onto chick yolk sacs and vice-versa, we show that CEC are generated in the yolk sac. These cells are mobilized during wound healing, demonstrating their participation to angiogenic repair processes. Furthermore, we found that the allantois is also able to give rise to CEC in situ. In contrast to the yolk sac and allantois, the embryo proper does not produce CEC. Our results show that CEC exclusively originate from extra-embryonic territories made with splanchnopleural mesoderm and endoderm, while definitive hematopoietic stem cells and endothelial cells are of intra-embryonic origin.

Abstract: in la plata (nowadays sucre, bolivia), reflections on the best way of governing and harmonizing civil and ecclesiastical authority were of particular interest at the end of the 17th century. the most important text of that time is a voluminous treatise written by the sardinian pedro frasso, a public prosecutor of the royal audience mentioned above. some of the highest personages of the city (among them five ecclesiastics) eulogized this jurist by means of letters published within the preliminaries to the two volumes of the treatise. i would like 1) to situate these paratexts with regard to the controversies about the regalismo; 2) to outline the profile of the authors; 3) to make their argumentation visible; and 4) to explain the motivations of their adhesion while others remained silent.

Abstract: La reflexión sobre el mejor modo de gobernar y de armonizar las potestades civiles y eclesiásticas tuvo particular impulso en La Plata (hoy Sucre, Bolivia), a fines del siglo XVII. El escrito más importante de ese tiempo es un voluminoso tratado del sardo Pedro Frasso, fiscal de dicha Real Audiencia. Algunos de los más encumbrados personajes de la ciudad (entre ellos cinco eclesiásticos) elogian a este jurista por medio de cartas que son publicadas en los preliminares de ambos volúmenes del tratado. Me interesa: 1) situar estos paratextos en relación con las controversias en torno al regalismo; 2) delinear el perfil de sus autores; 3) poner a la vista sus argumentos; 4) ensayar respuestas a la pregunta por las motivaciones de su adhesión, así, como por las del silencio de otros. Multipole Expansion of Bremsstrahlung in Intermediate Energy Heavy Ion Collisions

Abstract: Using a multipole expansion of the radiated field generated by a classical electric current, we present a way to interprete the bremsstrahlung spectra of low energy heavy ion collisions. We perform the calculation explicitely for the system ^{12}C+ ^{12}C at 84AMeV and compare the result with the experimental data of E. Grosse et al. Using simple model assumptions for the electromagnetic source current we are able to describe the measured data in terms of coherent photon emission. In this context, the information contained in the measured data is discussed.
Comment on "Coulomb corrections to e^+e^- production in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions"

Abstract: The qualitative difference in the use of retarded and Feynman amplitudes as demonstrated in nucl-th/0101024 had been wrongly considered in this comment. The concept of the breakdown of crossing symmetry is not effective in the case considered in the adressed article. The technical aspects of the evaluation of higher-order corrections which were adressed in the original comment and their applicability to the total inclusive cross section have been clarified.
