Patos Lagoon is a very dynamic environment presenting hydrodynamic fluctuations from synoptic to decadal timescales. Thus, understanding the processes that determine the long term variability is fundamental for the correct coastal planning and management of this region. The main objective of this study is to understand how the freshwater discharge of the main tributaries controls the estuarine hydrodynamics of the Patos Lagoon, when considering long term timescales. Two numerical simulations were carried out using the TELEMAC3D numerical model, the former using freshwater discharge from 1940 to 1973 year (simulation A), and the second simulation using data between 1974 and 2006 year (simulation B). These two periods were selected because before (after) 1973 year, the annual mean freshwater discharge was lower (higher) than the mean value for the whole period (1080 m3/s). The navigational channel discharge, water level, salinity and current velocity differences between both simulations were analyzed. Ebb conditions prevailed over flood conditions for both simulations, but simulation B presented a higher volume of freshwater exported through the coastal zone. Water level differences demonstrated higher values (0.08 meters) close to the Guaiba River, which is the main tributary of the study region, and lower values were observed near to the Patos Lagoon mouth (0 meters). The most significant differences in the mean bottom and surface salinity were observed in the central zone of the estuary and at the Barra Breakwaters. Simulation A presented higher saline intrusion due to lower freshwater discharge, while simulation B showed an increase in the coastal plume intensity, caused by the higher freshwater discharge. The hydrodynamical simulations demonstrated with precision that the freshwater discharge intensity determine the vertical stratification of the estuary.

Abstract: The analysis of wave effects above salinity is important in order to define mixing processes and their potential to change density gradients, since action in the region of the Patos Lagoon plume is highly dynamic. This paper aims to evaluate the influence of waves on the mixing pattern of the adjacent continental shelf. Constantly marked by tides and circulation variations, changing from flood to ebb tide, salinity stands as a major parameter for analysis. The study is based on hydrodynamic numerical modeling experiments using the TELEMAC3D model and waves generated by the wind using the TOMAWAC coupled model. The comparison between the situations considering the waves generated by the wind and without waves was made through time series analysis, stratification series, transversal cross sections, longitudinal cross sections, salinity mean fields and diagrams by Richardson and Brünt-V?is?l?s frequency parameters. With the cross sections analysis, the mixing effect generated by the waves was observed, demonstrating clearly that the waves were capable of raising the superficial salinity in regions far from the Patos Lagoon entrance, while at the entrance, the wave effects enhanced the mixing on the deepest layers, decreasing the saline intrusion and expanding the plume more radially on the surface. The space-temporal diagrams were effective to demonstrate the modulation effect of the waves over the salt mixing of saline waters, revealing that wave effects decrease the stratification as well as the Brünt-V?is?l?s frequency and increase the period of buoyancy, due to the mixing increase.

International Journal of Geosciences (IJG) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ijg.2014.513126
Abstract: The application of marine current turbines for electricity generation could offer a distinct advantage over other renewable energy sources due to the regular and predictable nature of this resource. This paper details the application of Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) as a possible tool for decision makers to better understand the environment and the impacts of the marine current turbines. The best areas for generating energy from the currents were found using a tridimensional model (TELEMAC3D). In addition to applying the energy conversion module, these regions were also evaluated for energy production, which was then applied to the AHP. Several databases (Transmission and Transport, Socioeconomic, Conservation Units, Endangered Species and Geological Information) were compared to minimize decision deviation. The results showed the viability of the northern region of the Southern Brazilian Shelf (SBS) as a possible area to harvest energy from the currents, as much of the studied region was limited by human activities in the coastal zone and sensitive biological resources.

Abstract: objective this study assessed the concentration of potassium in raw and macerated raw vegetables and vegetables cooked by different methods - boiling, microwave and pressure-cooking - to verify if maceration and different cooking methods can effectively reduce the concentration of this mineral. methods this experiment had a random 3x5 factorial design (3 vegetables x 5 procedures) and the analyses were repeated 3 times. flame photometry was used to determine potassium concentration in raw, soaked, boiled, microwaved and pressure-cooked potatoes, carrots and broccoli. results potassium concentration in soaked (232.2mg/g), boiled (197.3mg/g), microwaved (170mg/g) and pressure-cooked (187.2mg/g) potatoes and soaked (315.0mg/g), boiled (309.9mg/g), microwaved (243.3mg/g) and pressure-cooked (210.6mg/g) carrots did not differ significantly. on the other hand, potassium concentration in microwaved (280.1mg/g) and pressure-cooked (167.3mg/g) broccoli was significantly different from that found in soaked and boiled broccoli. therefore, microwaving and pressure-cooking reduce the potassium concentration in broccoli more effectively. conclusion maceration and the different cooking methods were effective in reducing the concentration of potassium in the studied vegetables. however, other factors such as cooking length, temperature, type of container and microwave frequency and power level may also affect potassium concentration.

Abstract: the focus of this paper is to establish a characterisation method for seven polyamide (pa) grades to determine the major material to manufacture an automotive worm gear. the composite properties were measured according to the worm gear loadings: tensile strength, young's modulus, abrasion and impact resistance. they were also correlated to the pa moisture absorption and its glass fibre (gf) reinforcement. the data from mechanical tests were applied in the finite element analysis (fea) using the von mises stress criterion. before the rig tests of the pa worm gears, the injection process was evaluated, through the capillary rheometry. a higher difficulty to process pa 6/6 30% gf was found, due to its lower apparent viscosity. in the end, the influence of moisture absorption was as decisive to the gear's material selection as the gf to the pinion. thus, the pas with the best performance were: pa 6 with 30% gf (gear) and with pa 60% gf (pinion).

Abstract: the brazilian child and adolescent statute (cas) has generated an increase in the number of programs assisting the referred population, but there have not been changes in terms of approach. the objective of this study was to understand the perceptions of workers in institutions providing adolescent care, the difficulties they face and methods of overcoming them. the study was performed in s?o carlos, brazil. data was collected at institutions providing adolescent care, by means of documents and performing interviews. the documents were analyzed based on the bourdieu framework. results showed that the institutions perceive adolescence and adolescents apart from their sociality and historicity and focus attention on problematic adolescents, and not as subjects with rights. a more radical change in these adolescents' view would enable the construction of new work process instruments capable of assisting them as a whole.

Psico , 2008,
