Neves, Eduardo Borba;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2007000900020
Abstract: this study aims to describe the risk management method used by the brazilian army, ranging from the guidelines, norms, and standards to the implementation of activities in the barracks, providing a brief comparison with key occupational safety provisions by the ministry of labor and employment. a qualitative approach was used, based on triangulation of data collection techniques: document collection; systematic observation; and a semi-structured interview with 24 key informants among the military, divided into three groups, aimed at collecting information on the main hierarchical levels: officers, sergeants, corporals, and privates. we found that the brazilian army's risk management method is based on three main documents: instruction booklet 32/1, instruction booklet 32/2, and the military instruction program. the method only refers to accident risks, overlooking other important aspects covered in the regulatory standards of the ministry of labor and employment and other types of risks.
Prevalência de sobrepeso e obesidade em militares do exército brasileiro: associa??o com a hipertens?o arterial
Neves,Eduardo Borba;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232008000500029
Abstract: this study was aimed at determining the association between body mass index (bmi), waist/ hip index (whi) and waist circumference (wc) with prevalence of systemic arterial hypertension (sah) in male members of the brazilian army. the sample consisted of 426 men aged between 27 and 37 years, all students of the brazilian army post graduation school for officers - esao in 2006. subjects were considered hypertense when presenting arterial pressure equal or above 140/90mmhg and when using antihypertensive drugs. considering the bmi, whi and wc respectively, the results point to the following percentages of obese or overweight subjects: 12.91%, 7.98% and 17.84%. the best anthropometric indicator for systemic arterial hypertension was the waist/ hip index (odds ratio = 4,45). our findings show a prevalence of systemic arterial hypertension (5,63%) considerably below that found in other national studies and strong associations between the used anthropometric indicators and hypertension.
A prote??o auditiva utilizada pelos militares do Exército Brasileiro: há efetividade?
Neves,Eduardo Borba; Soalheiro,Marcia;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232010000300032
Abstract: this study aims to identify the noise exposure and verify if the hearing protection used by these workers is adjusted for the exposure to the impact noise during the activities of basic shot instruction in the brazilian army produced by light automatic fusils - fal, caliber 7.62mm. this study can be considered analytical, since it seeks to establish causal relations among the diverse variables involved. it was used the qualitative approach, in the mapping of the working process; and also the quantitative approach in order to analyze the data in relation to this process. it was possible to have a close estimate of the reality on the basis of data collection triangulation, to include: systematic observation, half structured interview and experimental exercise. based on the analyses, it can be stated these workers are exposed to a noise which ranges from 147.3 to 171 db. therefore, it can be concluded that the 3m 1100 hearing protection, which is largely used by military, do not provide noise reduction, since its reducing value corresponds to nrrsf at 12 db. thus, there is no effectiveness in hearing protection for the soldiers.

Abstract: introduction: the therapeutic ultrasound act in biological tissues by means of vibration can produce physiological effects of thermal and non-thermal. objective: to discuss the parameters that affect the heating of biological tissues by ultrasound. materials and methods: we conducted a literature research based on isi web and scopus database. we selected the articles in the english language that have studied the temperature variation after the application of ultrasound in humans. results: there are significant variations related to tissue-temperature rise. for the 3mhz ultrasound, there is an average increase of 2.6 oc in superficial tissues, and to the 1mhz us, there is an average increase of 1.7 oc in deep tissues. there is a higher heating of the treated tissue when an area twice the era (effective radiating area) size, the shorter the higher the heating, there is an increase in temperature relative intensities. intensities ranging from 0.5 to 3 w/cm2 have a significant increase in temperature. regarding the mode of application, the gel provides an improved coupling, generating more heat with an application time of five minutes - the application time depends on the treatment area and power density. however, the speed of application appears to modify the heating up to 7-8 cm/s. also, different commercial devices produce heat differently. conclusion: parameters for ultrasound application must be controlled and adjusted to generate deep heating of tissues considering that it may vary among devices.
Uso do chumbo em urina como indicador de exposi??o e sua rela??o com chumbo no sangue
Moreira, Maria de Fátima Ramos;Neves, Eduardo Borba;

Abstract: the aim of this work was to verify whether there are statistically significant correlation between the concentrations of lead in blood (pb-b) and urine (pb-u). electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry was used in the determination of lead concentration in biological material. venous blood and spot urine were collected from workers occupationally exposed (95), adults (130) and children up to 15 years old (22) environmentally exposed. after a test showing significant differences between pb-u and the three categories previously determined, cutting points for pb-u were established to predict pb-b values by the roc curve. thus, it is expected that pb-b is lower than 10 μg.dl-1 with pb-u up to 0.55 μg. dl-1, whereas lead levels in blood below 27.6 μg. dl-1 are expected when the amount of the metal in urine is lower than 2.05 μg.dl-1. so, urine can be used to replace blood for the assessment of the occupational exposure to lead. however, caution is advised in the case of environmental exposure, since urinary lead should be used just as an estimation of the metal content in blood.
O risco da profiss?o militar na cidade do Rio de Janeiro em "tempo de paz": a percep??o da tropa
Neves,Eduardo Borba; Mello,Márcia Gomide da Silva;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232009000500011
Abstract: this study aims at determining the risk perception of army military concerning common activities at military units of troop in rio de janeiro. this mapping might allow taking preventive action when preparing these professionals, reducing their vulnerability. the present study is descriptive and used a qualitative methodological approach. the informers were selected into four military units and divided in three groups: eight officers, eight sergeants and eight corporal/soldiers, summing up 24 informers. it was possible to identify three risk categories noticed by the military in their common military units activities: (a) the risk of being a military in a city where urban violence reached the level there is in rio de janeiro city; (b) the risk of accidents and; (c) the risk of injuries or chronic pathology related to the exposure to activities that need proper protection, noticed by a number of informants. it can be concluded that the local violence has a great influence on the health of the military, due to the fact that modifies substantially the daily routines and their emotions during the work and that the perception the military have of the risks of their activities is focused on the present moment.
