Revista de Finan?as Aplicadas , 2010,

Abstract: this study evaluates the validity and reliability of the baecke questionnaire on habitual physical activity when applied to a population of hiv/aids subjects. validity was determined by comparing measurements for 30 subjects of peak oxygen uptake, peak workload, and energy expenditure with scores for occupational physical activity (opa), physical exercise in leisure (pel), leisure and locomotion activities (lla), and total score (ts). reliability was determined by testing and retesting 29 subjects at intervals of 15-30 days. validity was evaluated with the pearson correlation and reliability analyses were done using the intraclass correlation, paired student t-test, and bland-altman methods. peak vo2 and peak workload had significant correlation with pel (r = 0.41; r = 0.43; respectively). energy expenditure had a significant correlation with opa (r = 0.64). the intraclass coefficients were 0.70 or more for opa, pel and ts. there was no difference in opa, pel, lla and ts between the two evaluations. the bland-altman methods showed that there was good agreement between the measurements for all habitual physical activities scores. results show that the baecke questionnaire is valid for the evaluation of habitual physical activity among people living with hiv/aids.

Abstract: objective: our aim in this paper was to evaluate the biochemical abnormalities that may be correlated with fibromyalgia, such as the ros production by granulocytes from patients with fibromyalgia in comparison to cells from healthy subjects. methods: ten patients (9 women and 1 man, age ranging from 20 to 40 years old) with primary fibromyalgia, according to the american college of rheumatology criteria, were selected. none of them were using medications 2 weeks before starting the study. patients with rheumatic and non-rheumatic associated disease were excluded. sex and age-matched healthy controls (n = 19) were simultaneously selected. the granulocytes from patients and controls were collected from peripheral blood. the quantification of reactive oxygen species was performed in a luminol-dependent chemiluminescence assay. results: we have demonstrated, for the first time, the increase of ros production (3.2 times) in peripheral blood granulocytes from patients with fibromyalgia in comparison to the same cells from healthy subjects. conclusions: the present result may indicate a possible role of free radicals in fibromyalgia subjects, once they have already been shown in other human diseases, including painful states. we suggest that further studies are needed to understand the importance of these findings, delineating a new perspective in understanding and approach of fibromyalgia patients.
A??o coletiva e veto em política pública: o caso do saneamento no Brasil (1998-2002)
Sousa,Ana Cristina Augusto de; Costa,Nilson do Rosário;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232011000900022
Abstract: in 1999, the federal government has committed itself to the imf with the privatization of the sanitation and other public services, seeking resources to address the fiscal crisis. he proposed the bill 4147/01 as the regulatory framework that would provide the necessary security for investors interested in acquiring the state-owned sanitation enterprises. against this initiative, a coalition of industry interests mobilized in order to veto the adoption of privatization: the national front for environmental sanitation (fnsa). this paper identifies the actors, the agenda and the interests involved in this political coalition. it shows that the coalition acted decisively as an instance of veto, limiting the effects of the agreement with the imf on the public policy of sanitation in brazil this time.

Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2002000300008
Abstract: statistical methods known as survival analyses are useful for analyzing time-related events, in which time from a benchmark event to an endpoint is the focus of interest. survival analysis describes not only patient survival statistics (as suggested by the name), but also other dichotomous outcomes such as time of remission, time of breastfeeding, etc. this paper discusses survival analysis techniques, commenting and comparing their utilization, especially in the field of oncology. it also presents and discusses types of epidemiological studies and data sources to which this type of analysis is applied. the authors take into account the difference between hospital-based or clinical series and population-based approaches. interpretation of results is also discussed.

Abstract: the purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of malocclusion in deciduous and permanent dentition of schoolchildren enrolled in public and private schools in the city of sao paulo, brazil, in 1996. occlusal conditions were classified as normal, mild, and moderate/severe according to world health organization criteria. the results refer to 985 schoolchildren ages five and 12 years. prevalence of malocclusion was high, increasing from 48.97 ± 4.53% in the deciduous dentition to 71.31 ± 3.95% in the permanent dentition. the proportion of moderate/severe malocclusion was nearly twice as great in the second dentition (or = 1.87; 95% ci = 1.43-2.45; p < 0.001). no significant difference was observed according to gender or public vs. private school. statistically significant differences were associated with ethnicity, indicating the complexity and diversity of occlusion in the population and suggesting the need for longitudinal studies.

Abstract: objective: to assess the association between dietary intake and central obesity among people living with hiv/aids and receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy. methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted involving 223 adult individuals in the city of s?o paulo city in 2002. the study population was classified according to central obesity, defined as waist-to-hip ratio >0.95 for men and >0.85 for women. the dietary variables studied were energy consumption (in calories and calories/kilo of body weight), macronutrients (in grams and % of energy intake), total fiber (grams) and fruit and vegetables intake (grams). the potential confounders examined were sex, skin color, age, schooling, income, body mass index, physical activity, smoking habits, peripheral cd4+ t lymphocyte count and length of protease inhibitor use. the multiple logistic regression model was performed in order to evaluate the association between central obesity and dietary intake. results: the prevalence of central obesity was 45.7% and it was associated with greater consumption of lipids: for every increase of 10g of lipid intake the odds of central obesity increased 1.28 times. carbohydrate consumption showed negative association (or=0.93) with central obesity after adjustment for control variables. conclusions: the results suggest that the amount of carbohydrates and lipids in the diet, regardless of total energy intake, may modify the chance of developing central obesity in the studied population. nutritional interventions may be beneficial for preventing central obesity among hiv/aids patients.
