Revista de História Regional , 2009,
Abstract: The idea of the delay or archaism of the elites from Campos Gerais do Paraná supported in the great country properties and extensive creation appears spread in academic works, literature and the media, influencing the proper course of the politics of regional development. However, we defend the thesis of that the modernity these local elites in the long of history because of constant modernizations of the regional productive process and the production of the social exclusion.

Abstract: objectives: evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a training program for performing ultrasound-guided internal jugular vein cannulation in critically ill patients. methods: cohort prospective study, evaluating adult patients admitted in a teaching intensive care unit (icu). catheter placement was performed by an icu medical resident. the patient's baseline characteristics, vessel's position and operator experience were the evaluated variables. the main outcomes were cannulation success rate and incidence of major complications. results: a total of 118 consecutive patients were enrolled between may 2008 and november 2009. the success rate of ultrasound guided catheter placement was 90% (106/118), 77% in the first attempt. major complications occurred in 4% of the cases (n = 5) and were not associated with the analyzed variables. inability to place the guide wire was the reason for 58% (7/12) of the failures. operators with more than 15 previous ultrasound guided cannulations had an increased success rate (95% vs. 79%, p = 0.01) and increased failure was related to previous catheterization (26% vs. 7%, p = 0.02). conclusion: learning ultrasound guidance for ijv vein cannulation was safe and feasible in icu patients. this process was not associated to complications and better results were achieved across the spectrum of operator experience
Technical Note: Statistical analysis of defects of tiles′ joints
de Brito, J.,Silvestre, J.
Materiales de Construccion , 2007,
Abstract: The present article addresses tile joint defects in interior and exterior floors and walls. It begins with a classification of tile joint defects along with their likely causes, establishing a correlation matrix between the two sets of parameters. This is followed by the identification of the flaws found most frequently in this type of cladding, based on field data collected during 88 inspections of tile joint material. The statistical analysis of these data is shown in the form of charts representing the frequency of joint defects, their causes and the interrelationships between the two. The field work confirmed the high frequency of joint defects in all types of tiling. This conclusion underscores the need for proper joint design and maintenance planning (including periodic inspection and repair as appropriate) to guarantee the durability of this type of cladding.

Abstract: this research work proposes the development of a mobile robot prototype through artificial intelligence techniques allowing autonomous navigation in indoor type test environments. in this research work, a perception system composed of five perception sonars array that provides an environment detection system was designed. the sonar signals were captured by the embedded software which determined the control signals from the drive system by means of artificial intelligence techniques. the design of the differential drive systems with two servomotors and a supply circuit to assure batteries voltage stabilization are also presented.
Re-examining hypotheses concerning the use and knowledge of medicinal plants: a study in the Caatinga vegetation of NE Brazil
Ulysses de Albuquerque
Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine , 2006, DOI: 10.1186/1746-4269-2-30
Abstract: A study was undertaken with the participation of 31 adults from a rural community in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, in order to analyze the patterns of use of medicinal plant resources, and to test a number of hypotheses concerning their use and local knowledge about them. The sources of medicinal plants used by the local community, the differences in oral information concerning the use of plants with their effective uses, and the role of exotic plants in local folk medicine practices were examined.Forty-eight plant species were cited as having medicinal uses, of which 56.25% are native to the Caatinga region. The patterns of harvesting and the importance of these trees and shrubs as medicinal plants seem to be compatible with a hypothesis based on the seasonal availability of plant resources. There is no direct correlation between known medicinal plants and those used by the local population, which agrees with observations made in different tropical regions. However, this observation was not interpreted in terms of the idea of "erosion" of knowledge (commonly used to explain this lack of correlation), but rather to propose two new concepts: "mass knowledge" and "stock knowledge".Native plants are a very significant component of locally used medicinal plants, although exotic plants are important for treating specific health problems – which leads the proposal of a hypothesis of diversification.Patterns of medicinal plant use by local peoples are considered to vary as a function of plant habitat collection, cultural changes, and ecological and biochemical aspects [1,2]. For example, on one hand the literature suggests that the most probable explanation for the dominance of weeds in different medicinal floras is that they have high levels of bioactive compounds. This idea is based on the apparency hypothesis [see [3-5]]. The central idea is the following: "the plants could be classified into two basic groups: 'apparent', and 'non-apparent'. 'Apparent' plants are usu
Manejo tradicional de plantas em regi?es neotropicais
Albuquerque, Ulysses Paulino de;
Acta Botanica Brasilica , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-33061999000300011
Abstract: the main aspects of traditional plant management techniques exercised in the neotropic are briefly reviewed. the aims of this work are: 1. to describe how some traditional populations, especially those located in neotropical areas, manage natural resources; 2. to identify the main strategies employed; 3. to emphasize the contribution of traditional techniques to the sustainable development and management of natural resources. two types of resource management are characterized and discussed: community management, and individual species management. in view of the fact that some traditional populations manage natural resources based on an integrated conception of nature, it is possible to verify that traditional knowledge systems can contribute to sustainable development.
