Scientia Militaria : South African Journal of Military Studies , 2012, DOI: 10.5787/14-1-534
Abstract: Apart from the fact that the assistance of the SADF is necessary in many fields in SWA, such as public services and the medical and agricultural fields, it's presence also serves another very important purpose. Abstract: 'Down the streets of Ponsmouth, more than a hundred years ago, walked a sailor with one arm, one eye, a persistent state of nerves and unable to tread a ship's deck without being seasick. Scientia Militaria : South African Journal of Military Studies , 2012, DOI: 10.5787/11-4-681
Abstract: Tattoo According to Boatner, the word probably originated among British troops in Holland during the Thirty Years War (1618 - 1648) or during the wars of King William III during the 1690's. The word is derived from the Dutch 'tap' (tap or faucet) and 'toe' (to or off). When the time came for the soldiers to leave the taverns and return to their billets, the Officer of the Day, with a sergeant and drummer beat his way through the streets. This was the signal for the Dutch tavern keepers to 'Doe den tap toe' or turn off the taps.

Abstract: The Genesis of the Western Front On 28 June 1914 Bosnian nationalists had assassinated the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austrian throne and caused military preparations which propelled Europe to war. In the first few weeks of war the invading German armies scored a series of rapid and inspiring successes, but by the beginning of September the French, aided by a small British Expeditionary Force, halted the enemy advance and compelled a tactical withdrawal. The front-line troops of both sides now dug themselves crude entrenchments and awaited reinforcements and fresh supplies.
