Development Process of Intermodal Transport Solutions: The Case of Dedicated Solutions Based on Large Shippers’ Volumes  [PDF]
Edith Sorkina
Journal of Transportation Technologies (JTTs) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jtts.2012.24035
Abstract: The objective of this paper is to create a process view of the development of intermodal transport solution from the basic idea to implementation. Special case of dedicated solutions based on large shippers’ volumes is chosen, where the shippers engage in the development process of the new solutions. Research is conducted using a qualitative approach: multiple case studies. Empirical data has been obtained through in-depth semi-structured interviews with relevant respondents involved in the development projects. Shippers’ perspective on the development process is studied. Development process can be described through a generic four-stage process: Initiation, Planning, Implementation, and Further Development. Different actors and different resources are required at the different stages. The complex process of establishing new intermodal solutions has lacked attention in the intermodal research. Understanding and improving the development process of new intermodal solutions is considered to have an important effect on the viability of intermodal transport and can help to understand the barriers that prevent companies from switching to intermodal. Development process of new dedicated intermodal solutions is a gradual process of building up the transport solution in a continuous interaction between shippers and transport service providers. Research has focused on the shipper perspective on inter-modal transport, showing that switching to an intermodal transport is not simply a mode choice issue, but involves a transition process that takes time, demands resources, cooperation/coordination between multiple parties, may require changes in the supply chain beyond the transport link, involves multiple actors, and involves an industry that is itself in a process of change.

Abstract: in the field of biomedical applications a special interest exists regarding the study of the physicochemical and mechanical behaviour of materials, with special focus on the electrochemical degradation of metal/ceramic interfaces. in fact, metal/ceramic interfaces may be present in several biomedical devices, ranging from external or implantable sensors, to dental implants. diffusion bonding represents an important technique since, in opposition to other production technologies, such as active metal brazing, avoid the possible liberation of certain chemical components harmful to health. the aim of this work is to study the electrochemical degradation of the interface formed between commercially pure ti and al2o3 produced by diffusion bonding, in contact with a physiological solution. the present approach included the evaluation of the contribution of individual and pairs of interfacial layers on the global degradation processes. for this propose d.c. electrochemical techniques were used to monitor the open-circuit potential, and to perform potentiodynamic polarization and galvanic corrosion evaluation. also, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used as a complementary technique of the corrosion behaviour of the interface. chemical composition and morphology of samples and corrosion products were evaluated by sem and eds analysis. according to experimental results, two principal reaction layers were formed in the interface: tial and ti3al. the tial layer appears to be the responsible for the strong increase in corrosion rate of the interface.

Carrillo,Edith;
Revista Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales, Ni?ez y Juventud , 2011,
Abstract: the purpose of this paper is to provide elements for a broader discussion of the challenges faced by children who are involved in family disruption, and in particular, custody battles and abduction by a family member. to do this, there was analyzed the configuration of the familiy disruption from the narratives of the parents and the government employee located in the instances that have interference on this issue. the article seeks to demonstrate that although children are supposedly at the center of the dispute, in actuality their best interests are often times not taken into account. this is because instead of placing the wellbeing, of children first, gender and power relations between the adults involved overshadow children’s concerns in both public and private spheres.
Behaviour and orcadian rhythm of the fish bathygobius soporator Valenciennes (Gobiidae) under the influence of environmental salinity and temperature
Fanta, Edith;
Revista Brasileira de Zoologia , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-81751997000100021
Abstract: the behavioural patterns and their cireadian rhythms may be adaptive to the peculiar environmental conditions of subtropical brackish waters where ba-thygobius soporator valenciennes, 1837 live. adult fish were caught at the southern brazilian coast from mangrove rivers and rocky shores in a bay, where temperature and water salinity vary during the day and through the year. observation on the behaviour of the animals was undertaken in salinity 8.5ppt, 17.0ppt, 25.5ppt and 34.0ppt, each one in temperatures of 18oc and 28oc. temperature and salinity affect the frequency and intensity of some of the behavioural events, more than its pattern or rhythm. swimming is rare, decreasing along the day and with temperature increase, being even lower at low salinity; aggressiveness is the highest in the morning being not affected by temperature, but by salinity, being higher the higher it is; territory defence decreases along the day and is lower at high temperature and extreme salinities; fish hide more at high temperature and with the decrease of salinity, but this is not rhythmical; a higher proportion of fish rest in vertical position when salinity and temperature are high, increasing slightly at the beginning of the afternoon; respiratory frequency increases with temperature, salinity and in the afternoon; the colour of the fish is mainly light with spots in all hours of the day and in all temperatures and different levels of salinity, but with a tendency of the presence of some dark fish during the morning and some light ones in the afternoon, showing a higher variability of colours at low temperature and extreme salinities. besides temperature, salinity and light, feeding seems to be one of the determinant factors for the performance of the typical behaviour of b. soporator.
