Abstract: In the humid tropics, the largest obstacle to the implementation of sustainable farming systems is the reduced efficiency of nutrient use by crops. This study assesses the effectiveness of five selected rhizobia strains in symbiosis with cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.), with the objective of replacing N fertilization in the predominant agricultural system used by smallholder farmers. The study was carried out in three adjacent areas with distinct agricultural uses: conventional tillage, itinerant agriculture, and a no-till system. The experimental design was in randomized complete blocks with four replicates and seven treatments: five rhizobia strains (BR3262, BR3267, BR3299, INPA3-11B, and UFLA 3-84) and two controls without inoculation (one without mineral N and another fertilized with 74 kg N ha-1). We measured the dry mass of 100 grains, nodules and shoots, as well as cowpea yields and calculated relative and absolute efficiency indices for dry biomass production of cowpea shoots. Agricultural uses affected the number and dry mass of the nodules and, consequently, the mass of the dry plant matter and bean yield. In terms of yield, there was a major difference between the conventional and the itinerant systems. Yield was around four times as high in the itinerant system (1009.9 kg ha-1 compared to 243.7 kg ha-1). Under conditions of cohesion-prone soils, the system of conventional tillage reduces the possibility of cultivation of a second harvest in the year even with inoculation or N fertilization. En los trópicos húmedos, el mayor obstáculo para la aplicación de sistemas de agricultura sostenible es la reducción de la eficiencia del uso de nutrientes por los cultivos. Este estudio evalúa la eficacia de cinco cepas de rizobios seleccionados en simbiosis con frijol (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.), con el objetivo de sustituir la fertilización nitrogenada en el sistema de uso de suelo predominante utilizado por los peque os agricultores. El estudio se llevó a cabo en tres zonas adyacentes de distintos usos agrícolas: labranza convencional, agricultura itinerante, y un sistema de no laboreo. El dise o experimental fue en bloques al azar con cuatro repeticiones y siete tratamientos: cinco cepas de rizobios (BR3262, BR3267, BR3299, INPA3-11B y UFLA 3-84) y dos controles sin inocular (uno sin N mineral y otro fertilizado con 74 kg de N ha-1). Abstract: Dengue is a viral infection that can produce a severe fever and symptoms that may require hospitalization. It is transmitted between humans by the urban-adapted, day-biting Aedes mosquitoes and is therefore a particular problem in towns and cities. To explore this risk, one has assessed the potential levels of exposure by a climate-driven model for dengue risk transmission in Brazil and records of its seasonal variation at the key sites. Like the weather, it is unworkable to forecast the precise situation with regard to dengue in Brazil in 2014. One can, however, make informed guesses on the basis of averaged records of dengue in previous years. For the areas around the World Cup stadiums, these records show that the main dengue season will have passed before the World Cup is held in June and July. Unfortunately, the risk remains, even this is low but not negliegible, during these months in the Brazilian north and northeast. But, in fact, the risk of an outbreak of dengue fever during the upcoming soccer World Cup in Brazil is not serious enough to warrant a high alert in the host cities, according to a reliable early warning system for the disease.
Correlation between electrochemical and theoretical studies on the leishmanicidal activity of twelve Morita-Baylis-Hillman adducts

Abstract: enzymatic bioreduction of nitro groups plays an important role on the activity of biologically active nitroaromatic compounds. electrochemical methods are useful tools to simulate in vivo metabolic processes. this work presents electrochemical studies in aprotic media (n, n-dimethylformamide (dmf) plus tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (tbap) 0.1 mol l-1) using cyclic voltammetry (cv), differential pulse voltammetry (dpv) and square wave voltammetry (swv) of twelve morita-baylis-hillman adducts (mbha) with significant leishmanicidal activity. to facilitate the analysis, the molecules were grouped in four classes according to the side chain. cv studies show three up to four reduction waves, in which the first two waves are related to nitro group reduction. the other waves (presenting more negative potential) refer to the reduction of the α,β-unsaturated carbonyl or to the nitrile activated olefin side-chain. ortho adducts present facilitated reduction in comparison to the other isomers (meta and para) possibly due to hydrogen bond formation between the benzylic-oh and the nitro group, which stabilizes the reduction product (anion radical nitro) more efficiently than the original compound. ortho derivatives also present higher leishmanicidal activity upon comparison to the other derivatives of each class. conformational studies using hf/6-31+g(d)/pcm as a calculation level highlight this effect. molecular hardness (n) and atomic charges (qn) values corroborate the obtained experimental data.

Abstract: Background: Osteoarthritis is a slowly progressive and debilitating disease with high prevalence in adult population. Knee is one of the joints most affected by this disorder. There are several models for animals’ osteoarthritis induction, however it is not identified any paper that compares these techniques. The present study was aimed to define the most appropriate model for rats osteoarthritis induction. Material and Methods: 40 Wistar rats were distributed into 4 groups of 10 animals each: normality group (NG); meniscectomy group (MG); quinolone group (QG) and iodoacetate group (IG). Radiographic images of the rat’s knees were analyzed as well as the amount of chondrocytes in the epiphyseal and articular cartilage. Results: In the radiographic analysis, there was a low correlation between the raters. Regarding the amount of chondrocytes in the epiphyseal cartilage, it was noticed that the IG and QG groups had fewer chondrocytes than NG, in contrast to MG that reported similar results to normality (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference between IG and QG groups (p > 0.05). Regarding the amount of chondrocytes in articular cartilage, it was noticed that the IG group showed fewer chondrocytes than NG (p < 0.01), in contrast to the QG and MG groups that showed similar results to normality (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference between QG and MG groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Intraarticular injection of iodoacetate in rats is the model with greatest effect on reduction of chondrocytes amount.

Abstract: the object of this study was to identify which method, either logit or multivariate analyses, was the most efficient to estimate the coffee planters' willingness to accept a compensation, when there was a possibility of occurrence of marginal utility. for such, a questionnaire was formulated, with 33 questions involving information on coffee planters' socio - economic characteristics, the use of the methodology of contingent valuation (mcv), and the payment of the "offer game" that reveled the willingness to accept a compensation (wac), by exchanging a hectare of coffee by a hectare of forest. as expected, because of the marginal utility's bias, the logit method was unable to produce consistent results. however, when the wac was estimated by multivariate analyses, the results showed that if the government is willing to increase the provision of forest to 70 hectares, it should pay out 254,200 reais (around 116,000 dollars), dealing only with the coffee planters linked to the pro-café organization.
New Sulfonamides Derived from Carvacrol: Compounds with High Antibacterial Activity against Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Strains  [PDF]

Abstract: Nine new sulfonamides derived from carvacrol were prepared through a reaction between 4-hydroxy-2-isopropyl-5-methyl benzene sulfonyl chloride with various amines in excellent yields (76% - 92%). The sulfonamides were characterized using spectrometric and spectroscopic methods. Among these compounds, three derivatives showed excellent results in antibacterial activity against resistant S. aureus strains, with MIC values ranging from 3.9 to 62.50 ppm. The sulfonamide derivative of 4-methylaniline (SULF-1) had the best performance for all tested strains of bacteria (MIC = 3.9 to 15.62 ppm). Furthermore, the sulfonamide derivative of 4-fluoro aniline (SULF-3), which also presented promising results, was found to have a synergistic effect when combined with tetracycline and partial synergistic effect when combined with ampicillin, exhibiting an FIC index between 0.50 and 0.75. The sulfonamide derivative of 4-methylaniline had a synergistic effect in combination with erythromycin exhibiting an FIC index of 0.37. Carvacrol in association with the antibiotics tested did not have a synergistic effect.

Abstract: silica gel was chemically modified with the aromatic amines p-anisidine, p-phenytidine and p-phenylenediamine, using grafting reactions. the resulting modified silicas were characterized by infrared spectroscopy and n2 adsorption/desorption isotherms. the organic groups were covalently immobilized in a monolayer form. these modified silicas were investigated as adsorbents for pb2+, cu2+, cd2+ and ni2+ in aqueous and ethanol solutions. in a general way, the adsorption capacity values for all adsorbents presented the following sequence: pb2+ >> cu2+ @cd2+ @ ni2+. adsorption studies for all adsorbents, in competitive medium, showed better selectivity for cu2+ and pb2+ in aqueous medium and for pb2+ in ethanol solution. desorption studies were carried out using hcl and hno3 as eluents.

Abstract: The essential oils obtained from the dried and fresh leaves of Duguetia glabriuscula - (Annonaceae) were analyzed by GC/MS and compared. By employing the usual phytochemical workup, five aromadendrane sesquiterpenes were isolated from the essential oil obtained from fresh leaves: alloaromadendran-14beta-al, alloaromadendrene, (-)-ledol, viridiflorol, and (+)-spathulenol. Alloaromadendran-14beta-oic acid was also obtained, having been generated by the spontaneous oxidation of its corresponding aldehyde. Both essential oils displayed activity against Artemia salina Los aceites esenciales obtenidos de hojas secas y frescas de Duguetia glabriuscula (Annonaceae) fueron analizados por CG/EM y comparados. Empleando la fitoquímica usual fueron aislados cinco sesquiterpenos del tipo aromadendrano del aceite esencial de las hojas frescas: allo-aromadendran-14beta-al, (-)-ledol, viridiflorol, (+)-espatulenol y el ácido allo-aromadendran-14beta-oico. El ácido allo-aromadendran-14beta-oico fue también obtenido, habiendo sido generado por la oxidación espontánea de su aldehído correspondiente. Ambos aceites mostraron actividad enfrente Artemia salina
Statistical damage detection in a stationary rotor systems through time series analysis

Abstract: a novel approach to detect damage in stationary rotating systems excited by unbalance and stochastic forces is presented. the methodology is based solely on output time series measured at the bearings stations. the method deals with the application of auto-regressive models and statistical modeling for the linear prediction of damage diagnosis. the results showed that the approach is suitable for practical applications.
