La división del aire en los Quesiti et inventione diverse (1546) de Niccolò Tartaglia
Iommi Echeverría,Virginia;
Dynamis , 2010, DOI: 10.4321/S0211-95362010000100008

SANFUENTES ECHEVERRíA,OLAYA;
Historia (Santiago) , 2006, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-71942006000200006
Abstract: the european encounter with the new american space and it species during the sixteenth century, allows us to look at the european percepction of superiority towards exotic worlds in a more complex way. european description of american nature, the first visual images of the local species described with the colors of paradise, exotism and beauty, fertility and abundance, help in constructing a positive image of america. despite the original disdain or indifference towards the indigenous food, these percepctions will change over time when many of these products become a solution to world wide hunger and important ingredients for national gastronomies
Girolamo Fracastoro y la invención de la sífilis
Iommi Echeverría, Virginia;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702010000400002
Abstract: girolamo fracastoro wrote two works on syphilis: his famous poem, in which he gave a name to the disease, and a prose treatise. from the comparison of these works, in this paper we have identified the combination of several approaches as main characteristic of his description. on the one hand fracastoro followed the classical medical explanation that emphasized the corruption of the air in order to explain the origins of the disease. on the other hand, when referring to the forms of contagion, he stated clearly that the disease is contracted by direct contact with an infected person. it is possible then to talk of the "invention" of syphilis by fracastoro since he combined the information empirically collected, with the renaissance medical traditional perspective.

Iommi Echeverría,Virginia;
Temas medievales , 2010,
Abstract: this article examines the notion of air sustained by marsilio ficino in his consilio contra la pestilental, written after the epidemic of plague which ravaged florence in 1478 and 1479. the author of the article's purpose is to trace the main ideas which appear in ficino's work that may point to the sources that inspired him. some parts of the consilio lead the author to analyze ficino's complex idea of purity of the air which in turn is related to plato's idea appearing in the timaeus as well as being connected to the classical hippocratic medicine.
EL CULTO A LO FEO Y EL INVUNCHISMO EN CHILE SEGúN JOAQUíN EDWARDS BELLO
Uribe Echeverría,Catalina;
Revista chilena de literatura , 2009, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-22952009000200012
Abstract: this work intends to examine the cult of ugliness or "invunchismo", an ironic concept first coined up in the 1920s by the writer joaquín edwards bello, in reference to a chilean exa-cerbation of deformation into monstrosity and repulsiveness. according to the author, chile -or finis mundi- is a country whose apparent moderation masks a reality ofcruelty, brutality, and excess. from an uncompromising natural background emerges a tormented creature, still burdened by the "weigh of the night" (a metaphorfor the unconscious), yet capable of great resilience and assimilation. are chileans still as brutal and tormented as their ancestors? what can account for this harmful tendency towards destruction and devastation of the cities and the natural world? what are the manifestations of ugliness in the daily life of chileans? these are some of the topics that this work will attempt to review.
Interdisciplinariedad y convergencia tecnocientífica nano-bio-info-cogno
Echeverría, Javier;
Sociologias , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-45222009000200003
Abstract: the emergence of technoscience in the twentieth century changed scientific practice and the concept of interdisciplinarity. this article examines an important example of contemporary technoscience, which is the national science foundation (nsf) report converging technologies for improving human performance (ctihp), and its support for a new kind of interdisciplinarity, the nano-bio-info-cogno (nbic) technologies. the analysis of this report shows that the nsf concept of interdisciplinarity is instrumental, selective, and apparently reductionist, in detriment of the social sciences, arts and humanities. in the thesis, it is suggested that the concept of interprofessionality is more suitable for technoscience than that of interdisciplinarity.
