Abstract: fog is a factor that affects deeply the structure of vegetation of coastal deserts. guadalupe is an oceanic island located 260 km off the coast of baja california, and is one of the few places of the sonoran desert coasts with scarped coastal topography and frequent fog. with the aim to identify the effect of fog on the community of the palm forest (palmar) of brahea edulis located in the northern tip of the island: (1) we analyzed the richness and composition of vascular plants in the palmar compared to the remainder of the island, and (2) we analyzed the altitudinal variation of the abundance of palms, herbs and mosses to identify if there is altitudinal variation of the vegetation. although species composition was not different between palmar and the rest of island, species richness and vascular plant cover were greater in the palmar. on the other hand, we found a clear altitudinal zonation of the vegetation in the palmar that is similar to that found in south american fog-driven plant communities such as the lomas. thus, the palmar community of guadalupe island may be considered as a fog oasis, one of the very few that occur in north america.

--------------------------------------- The EU's Community "acquis" as a terminology resource: searching EUR-Lex. The European Union is an extremely useful online source of terminology for translators. Among the resources on its Web portal, the Community "acquis" (body of law) makes it possible to run term searches on aligned texts in any pair of official EU languages. This articles lists several methods for executing bilingual searches of this corpus, especially through EUR-Lex. It also presents some thoughts on the advantages these resources offer for translators of medico-legal texts, along with a reflection on the process of writing and translating them.
Martorell Poveda,Ma Antonia;
Index de Enfermería , 2008, DOI: 10.4321/S1132-12962008000100004
Abstract: question as person's condition or the identity have formed and are part from the debate philosophical about to the human existence. in philosophical terms, an person is a being with a body, makes aware, continuity, commitment and responsibility. however, what does it happen to the fellow's body when their conscience is truncated by the presence of an illness like the alzheimer? different collective have been built and disclosed a series of cultural representations about alzheimer?s disease, incorporated and normalized in the experience until the point of collaborating in the person's construction with alzheimer like somebody "without life." taking as relating theoretical the symbolic interaccionism and recovering the narratives of family caregivers, it is sought to illustrate and to analyze how in spite of a construction dominant about to a supposed "loss of the being" of the subject with alzheimer, in occasions, their caregivers favour, through their speeches and practical, the emergency of the person's identity and a recognition of the same one through their corporeal nature, necessary condition for their social identification. by way of conclusion, it?s precise to build and to diffuse an image of the alzheimer centered in the person that allows its to recognize and daily identification granting him a particular location in the society.
The role of vitamin A in reducing child mortality and morbidity and improving growth
RAMAKRISHNAN,USHA; MARTORELL,REYNALDO;
Salud Pública de México , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-36341998000200011
Abstract: this is an update of knowledge on the role of the vitamin a status in determining child mortality, morbidity and growth. recent information confirms the earlier conclusion of beaton et al. that a 23% reduction in young child mortality results following improvements in the vitamin a status. studies show that the mortality effect is primarily due to reductions in deaths due to acute gastroenteritis and measles but not acute respiratory infections (ari) and malaria. while improvement of the vitamin a status enhances the survival of older preschool children, it remains unclear whether it benefits infants (i.e. <6 months). vitamin a supplementation does not reduce the overall incidence and prevalence of common childhood illness; however, it reduces the incidence of more severe episodes of diarrhea. also, vitamin a supplementation either during and/or immediately after the illness does not improve its symptomatology. finally, contrary to earlier expectations, recently completed, placebo-controlled randomized interventions have failed to detect improvements in child growth.
