Abstract: As the introductory class of literature at the Faculty of Letters, Literary Enjoyment serves as a campaign to motivate students to appreciate and enjoy works of literature. Materials, which generally hinder the students' ability to enjoy literary works, should be carefully considered. Ideally, language and content should be easily digested but a compromise can be made between language and content.
Zingiber officinale, Piper retrofractum and Combination Induced Apoptosis and p53 Expression in Myeloma and WiDr Cell Lines
HAYATI Journal of Biosciences , 2012,
Abstract: In previous studies, Zingiber officinale, Piper retrofractum, and the combination showed cytotoxic activity, induced apoptosis, and p53 expression of HeLa, T47D, and MCF-7 cell lines. This study was conducted to investigate the cytotoxic and apoptotic activity of Zingiber officinale (ZO), Piper retrofractum (PR), and the combination as well as their effect to p53 expression on Myeloma and WiDr cells. The powder of ZO, PR, and ZO + PR combination (1:1) were macerated with 96% ethanol for 3 x 24 hours. MTT cytotoxic assay was performed on Myeloma and WiDr cell lines. Apoptotic cells were stained with ethidium bromide and acridine orange. Imunohistochemical expression of p53 was examined on Myeloma and WiDr cell lines. Doxorubicin was used as positive control in all assays. Results showed that ZO, PR, and ZO + PR combination had cytotoxic activity on Myeloma cells with IC50 of 28, 36, and 55 mg/ml respectively and WiDr cell lines with IC50 of 74, 158, and 64 mg/ml respectively, induced apoptotic activity, and increased p53 expression on Myeloma and WiDr cells. These results suggest that ZO, PR, and their combination induced Myeloma and WiDr cells in apoptosis through p53 expression.

Abstract: The method presented here provides the basis for a course in American prose for EFL students. Understanding and appreciation of American prose is a difficult task for the students because they come into contact with works that are full of cultural baggage and far apart from their own world. The audio visual aid is one of the alternatives to sensitize the students to the topic and the cultural background. Instead of proving the ready-made audio visual aids, teachers can involve students to actively engage in a more task oriented audiovisual project. Here, the teachers encourage their students to create their own audio visual aids using colors, pictures, sound and gestures as a point of initiation for further discussion. The students can use color that has become a strong element of fiction to help them calling up a forceful visual representation. Pictures can also stimulate the students to build their mental image. Sound and silence, which are a part of the fabric of literature, may also help them to increase the emotional impact.

Abstract: Witnessing the euphoria of the era of biotechnology in the late twentieth century, Crichton exposes the theme of biotechnology in his works. In Jurassic Park, he voices his concern about the impact of the use of biotechnology to preserve nature and its living creatures. He further describes how the purpose of preserving nature and the creatures has turned out to be destructive. This article discusses Crichton's main character, Hammond, who attempts to control nature by genetically recreating the extinct fossil animals. It seems that the attempt ignores his human limitations. Although he is confident that has been equipped with the technology, he forgets to get along with nature. His way of using technology to accomplish his purpose proves not to be in harmony with nature. As a consequence, nature fights back. And he is conquered.
ISLAM, ADAT, AND THE STATE: Matrifocality in Aceh Revisited
Eka Srimulyani
Al-Jami'ah : Journal of Islamic Studies , 2010,
Abstract: Matrifocality has been a rooted tradition in the social history of the community in Aceh. The principles of matrifocality have also affected on how women are positioned in the community, and the socio-gender relation within the community. The fact that Aceh has strongly associated to the Islamic values that claimed to support the paternal traditions. Apparently, the Islamic values and the local matrifocality practices juxtaposed through the roles of adat, which considered as inseparable to Islamic law or teaching, or in local term known as zat ngeun sifeut. Another point in revisiting matrifocality in Aceh in Aceh is an examination of how gender state ideology, particularly during the New Order Regime disregarded some local gender practices across some ethnics in the archipelago. Meanwhile, the state also hegemonied and promoted particular gender state ideology such as state ibuism. Nonetheless, the modernity and social changes have also contributed to the shifting of some matrifocality practices in contemporary Acehnese society. However, since the matrifocality has a strong root in the social life of the community, the principles of the matrifocality still survived until currently, although it transformed into ‘new matrifocality’ practices. Keywords: matrifocality, Aceh, gender, shari‘a law

Abstract: In the present paper, separation of nickel and cobalt in ammonia-ammonium carbonate solution that simulates pregnant leach solution of Caron Process by solvent extraction using LIX 84-ICNS was studied. LIX 84-ICNS is a novel extractant which is still being studied, especially for nickel and cobalt separation in ammonia-ammonium carbonate solution. A series of solvent extraction tests were performed at various equilibrium pH, temperature, extractant concentration, and volume ratio of organic to aqueous solution (O/A ratio). The investigation results show that the highest nickel and cobalt extraction percentages of 99.8% and 90.3% were obtained from the extraction test at equilibrium pH of 8.75, temperature of 55°C, extractant concentration of 40% (v/v) and O/A ratio of 1/1, respectively. Oxidation of cobalt in aqueous solution prior to extraction is needed to minimize co-extraction of cobalt. Co-extracted cobalt can be decreased from 90.3% to 30.3% by mixing 1% (v/v) H2O22 in aqueous solution prior to the extraction stage. It was found that nickel and cobalt extractions by LIX 84-ICNS are endothermic processes with enthalpy changes of +171.03 and +7.64 kJ/mole, respectively. Based on constructed McCabe-Thiele Diagram, nickel extraction level of more than 99.9% can be obtained in 2 stages at O/A ratio of 0.5. The highest stripping percentages of nickel and cobalt of 98.82% and 3.16% respectively were obtained at 200 g/l H2SO4 stripping agent.

Abstract: This development research aims at the realization of the development of teaching materials based on Problem Based Learning to know the practicality and effectiveness of PBL teaching materials to improve high thinking skills of fourth grade students of elementary school. The research method used is research development (Development and Development) by using research steps according to Borg and Gall. The population in this research is the fourth grader of elementary school in one cluster of Kalianda District and the sample of the research is 28 fourth graders of elementary school. Data collection techniques in this study were conducted by the documentation, observation, expert validation sheet, questionnaire needs analysis, and tests. The results showed that the teaching materials developed can improve the ability of high-level thinking and learning outcomes of learners who have been analyzed using N-Gain.

Abstract: Training students to transfer the message and meaning of the English source text to the Indonesian target text is not an easy task. Various difficulties and mistakes can occur. Students still have difficulties in understanding the text and in restructuring it into good Indonesian language. They still need to do a lot of exercises in transferring the meaning of the words, group of words or sentences.
