Abstract: Brazil should be known and studied by the Brazilians. This idea was the force that justified the constitution of the Comiss o Científica de Explora o (CCE), founded by members of the Brazilian Historic and Geographic Institute and supported by the Brazilian imperial government, in order to motivate research on the “young” country. Within this ambitious scientific and political project, ethnographic knowledge and practices were embraced in the deeds assigned to the scientist and poet Gon alves Dias, chief of the section of ethnography and travel narrative, whom should have performed his activities in Ceará province throughout 3 years (1859-1961). To reflect on the deeds of the mentioned section during its execution is the goal of this paper.O Brasil deve ser conhecido e estudado pelos brasileiros.

Abstract: the application of sugarcane residues to the soil may induce changes in soil compressibility parameters. the objective of this study was to investigate the compressibility behavior of a dystrophic cohesive yellow latosol in the coastal tablelands of the state of alagoas, in three different management systems with sugarcane, with different levels of organic residue application. the experiment was conducted in an area of sugarcane production (usina santa clotilde), alagoas. three plots were chosen in sugarcane fields: sugarcane under irrigation (smi), under fertigation with vinasse (smv) and with application of vinasse + filter cake (smvt). these management systems were compared to each other and to a control plot, represented by native forest (nf). the three sugar cane management systems had been established four years before soil sampling. undisturbed soil were collected (layers 0-0.20 m and 0.20-0.40 m), using a metal sampler. the samples were first tested by uniaxial compression (gravimetric moisture levels of 0.10; 0.14; 0.18; and 0.22 kg kg-1). for the compression test, loads were applied with vertical tensions of 12.5; 25; 50; 100; 200; 400; 800 and 1600 kpa and readings taken every 30 sec. thereafter, the samples were oven-dried for gravimetric moisture determination. the results were subjected to variance and multiple regression analysis of the pre-compaction tension, according to the following independent variables: bulk density (ds), gravimetric moisture (ug), mean weight diameter of water-stable aggregates (dmpu) and dissipated energy (ed). the load carrying capacity of native forest soil was lower in both layers than in the three sugarcane managements; the management systems under sugar cane with organic residue application (smv and smvt) have lower tension levels; the limit curves (suction increase and loading collapse) can be used in the planning of mechanical operations and pre-compaction stress can be predicted from the physical properties.

Abstract: the compaction of agricultural soils is a phenomenon of great concern in soil science. the major goal of research on the mechanical behavior of soil is to identify the least degrading soil management systems. in general, at a same compaction level, the higher content of organic matter, the lower maximum density and higher critical moisture for compaction, which consequently decreases the risk of physical degradation of the soil. the purpose of this study was to study the compressibility of a dystrophic cohesive yellow latosol of the coastal plains of alagoas. three areas were selected in sugarcane plantations of the sugar mill santa clotilde, representing three management systems: sugarcane under irrigation (ims), sugarcane under irrigation and vinasse application (smv) and sugarcane with vinasse and filter cake application (smvt). the three management systems were used in the 2003/2004 growing season and the soil sampled in february 2007. these systems were compared with each other and to a control area, represented by native forest (nf). the maximum soil density and critical moisture for compaction were evaluated in the layers 0-0.20, 0.20-0.40 and 0.40-0.60 m. the ability of sugarcane residues to dissipate part of the compacting energy was assessed in proctor tests at four levels of compression. the energy dissipated by crop residues was assessed in disturbed samples in the 0-0.20 m layer only. in the irrigated management system (ims), without cane residue application, the maximum density was highest and critical soil moisture for compaction lowest. of the different management systems, the most efficient in dissipating compression energy was the area under application of vinasse and filter cake, followed by the system of irrigation with vinasse, respectively, with respective values of 54 and 41 % dissipation at the highest level of compression energy. it was also observed that the dissipation of compression energy was higher at higher energy levels.

Abstract: objective: the purpose of this study is to present the short and mid-term results of the endovascular treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms (aaa). this is an initial experience of a multidisciplinary team. method: between july 2003 and october 2005, 42 patients (25 of whom suffered from aaas) were treated with endovascular therapy for aortic diseases. the mean patient age was 74 ±10.2 years with 92% men. the endovascular precedures were performed by a multidisciplinary team in the hospital de clínicas de porto alegre and hospital luterano (ulbra). in twenty-four of the aaa patients, bifurcated grafts were used and only one had a straight graft. in all patients the procedure was carried out by femoral artery dissection in a catheterization laboratory. there was no need to convert to open repair. results: there were no operative or postoperative deaths. the survival rate free from reintervention is 96% after two years and three months. one (4%) patient needed a new endovascular procedure for type i endoleak one year after, and three extensions were used successfully. two other patients needed femoro-femoral bypasses, one at the same time as the endovascular procedure and the other one 24 hours later because of lower limb ischemia. conclusion: the endovascular treatment of aaas represents a new less invasive alternative to conventional surgery, especially for high risk patients. further prospective and randomized studies to evaluate the long term outcomes are needed. excellent results in short and mid-terms can be obtained by a multidisciplinary teams in our country.

Abstract: purpose: to evaluate and present our initial results of a new marker (hemosiderin) for mammary sentinel lymph node identification in an experimental model. methods: skins mapped like a lymphatic duct draining to the axilla in patients submitted to breast biopsy, in our mastology service, stimulated us to try it in an animal model (female dogs). our theory was that some blood derivate (hemosiderin) was captured by macrophages and accessed the lymphatic ducts in direction to the axilla. six female dogs of no defined race were studied. we injected 0,2 ml of technetium on both superior mammary glands. after ten minutes, a 2,5 ml solution of hemolized blood (hemosiderin) from the own animal was injected in the subareolar lymphatic plexus on the left superior mammary gland and 2,5 ml of patent blue concomitantly and equally on the contralateral gland. ten minutes after, incisions on both axilas were made to search, through the lymphatic mapping and a gamma probe, the sentinel lymph nodes. results: seven brown sentinel lymph nodes were indentified and also radiomarked on the left axilla. six blue sentinel lymph nodes were identified and also radiomarked on the right axilla. conclusion: preliminary studies of a potential new dye for sentinel lymph node identification are presented. it may be the change of the current use of the blue dyes and their severe side-effects on patients submitted to sentinel lymph node biopsies.
