Asymptotic probability density functions in turbulence
F. O. Minotti,E. Speranza
Physics , 2007,
Abstract: A formalism is presented to obtain closed evolution equations for asymptotic probability distribution functions of turbulence magnitudes. The formalism is derived for a generic evolution equation, so that the final result can be easily applied to rather general problems. Although the approximation involved cannot be ascertained a priori, we show that application of the formalism to well known problems gives the correct results.
Biomechanical evaluation of six femurgraft-tibia complexes in ACL reconstruction
L. Labianca,E. Monaco,A. Speranza,G. Camillieri,A. Ferretti
Journal of Orthopaedics and Traumatology , 2006, DOI: 10.1007/s10195-006-0136-7
Abstract: Soft tissue graft-tibial tunnel fixation is considered the weak point in reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). We hypothesized that the biomechanical properties of fixation devices used in ACL reconstruction can be better evaluated by testing complete constructs (femoral tunnel fixation-graft-tibial tunnel fixation). Porcine knees were reconstructed with bovine digital extensor tendons using 6 different commercially available fixation device combinations, and biomechanically tested with cyclic loads (1000 cycles, 0–150 N, 0.5 Hz) and until failure (crosshead speed, 250 mm/min). The device combinations tested (in groups of 6) were EndoButton CL-BioRCI, Swing Bridge-Evolgate, Rifidfix-Intrafix, Bone Mulch- Washerlock, Transfix-Retroscrew, and Transfix-Deltascrew. Ultimate failure load, stiffness, slippage at cycles 1, 100, 500 and 1000 and mode of failure were evaluated. The statistical differences between pairs of groups were assessed with Student’s unpaired t test. The ultimate failure load of complexes made with the Swing Bridge- Evolgate was significantly higher than any other device (968 N; p<0.05), while that of devices made with Transfix-Retrofix was significantly lower than the others (483 N, p<0.05). The stiffness of Swing Bridge-Evolgate complexes was significantly higher than the others (270 N/mm, p<0.05). Regarding mode of failure, Rigidfix-Intrafix complexes showed a failure of the femoral fixation in all specimens. All failures of the other specimens occurred at the tibial side, except one specimen in the EndoButton CL-BioRCI group. Many commercially available tibial fixation devices showed biomechanically appreciable properties, sometimes better than femoral devices.
The formation of baric depressions near the Alps
Annals of Geophysics , 1975, DOI: 10.4401/ag-4898
Abstract: Available knowledge about the formation of baric lows near the Alps is critically reviewed. Emphasis is laid on problems that require further investigation. A distinction between the process of formation of local depressions in the baric field and real cyclogenesis (generation of cyclonic vorticity) in the lee of the Alps is suggested on the basis of theoretical considerations about the role of inertial effects in rotating flows past obstacles. Finally, the general importance of the problem of secondary flows in the interaction with obstacles is emphasized.
La Escalera Dorada de la Catedral de Burgos
Speranza, Fabio
Archivo Espa?ol de Arte , 2001,
Abstract: This essay analyses one of the most outstanding creations of the Spanish Renaissance. In particular the author dwells upon some Francesco di Giorgio Martini's drawings that should have inspired the architectural plan of the Escalera Dorada , on the hypothesis of a relationship with Diego de Sagredo and his Medidas del Romano. The author concludes his work with a detailed exame of Siloesque ornamentation and its possible Italian models. No disponible
Sculpture africaine. Blessures et altérité
Gaetano Speranza
CeROArt : Conservation, Exposition, Restauration d'Objets d'Art , 2009,
Beyond the notion of injury for the object, the author dwells on cultural traumatisms resulting from the meeting between African sculpture and the western world. A particular example is the one of ethnographical musical instruments for which restoration is often tributary of western conceptions.
Suspension Flows in a Pipeline with Partial Phase Separation
Alessandro Speranza
Physics , 2001, DOI: 10.1016/S0895-7177(00)00254-5
Abstract: The formulation of a model for the evolution of the flow of a solid-liquid mixture (coal-water) in a horizontal pipeline with partial phase separation is the aim of this work. Problems of instabilities due to complex eigenvalues, observed in previous models, seem to be completely solved in the present model, in which we give the genesis of the different terms written in the equations, coming from the natural definition of mass and momentum balance, and the consequent proof of well-posedness of the obtained PDE system with boundary-Cauchy data. The model describes a three-layer flow. Most of the material is carried by the upper layer, while the bottom layer consists of an immobile sediment. The intermediate layer grows to a maximum thickness and has the role of regulating the mass exchange between the extreme layers. In the last section we present some simulations for a particular choice of flow regime, and boundary-Cauchy data, that were suggested by experimental results provided by Snamprogetti (Fano, Italy).
Dirichlet and Neumann Problems Related to Nonlinear Elliptic Systems: Solvability, Multiple Solutions, Solutions with Positive Components
Luisa Toscano,Speranza Toscano
Abstract and Applied Analysis , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/760854
Abstract: We study the solvability of Dirichlet and Neumann problems for different classes of nonlinear elliptic systems depending on parameters and with nonmonotone operators, using existence theorems related to a general system of variational equations in a reflexive Banach space. We also point out some regularity properties and the sign of the found solutions components. We often prove the existence of at least two different solutions with positive components.
