The polish proposal for environmental protection

Abstract: Purpose: Th article presents the type of environment-related problem, and discusses the development of the concept of the sustainable development from the perspective of the international law. Over the past two hundred years, the mankind has exploited more than 50 percent of all natural resources, including energy minerals. The twenty-first century will be, out of necessity the period of intensive development of energy based on renewable resources. The protection of the environment is a global issue which requires to be specially safeguarded by the international law.Design/methodology/approach: The average geothermic gradient for the Earth`s crust (30°C/1km) can give us 10-20 MWe as a result (electrical energy) from one deep borehole heat exchanger. The value of electrical energy may be increased by introduction of a binary system with low-boiling medium into the energy system.Findings: Geothermic power plant of high capacity characterized by the fact that the steam superheater section, which is traditional in a conventional power plants, is replaced by the system of heat exchanger in the form of u-tubes with a single length ranging from 1000 meters to up to several thousand meters, initially placed in a metal casing with a transition to the rock layers of high temperature.Research limitations/implications: From the hot rock mass we can collect renewable resources of ,,dry” ascending energy from the paleo heat flow coming from the great nuclear furnace - the magma.Practical implications: The subject invention is the use of geothermic energy using a closed water cycle in heat exchangers, made of high-temperature creep resisting steam superheater steel tubes or titanium pipes. Thermal energy of water vapour, which is obtained in this way, is transformed into mechanical energy in the turbine, powering the generator.Originality/value: The role of a condenser can be fulfilled by a cascade system of thermal energy utilization (heat engineering, production of drinking water through desalination process, horticultural greenhouses, recreation, water pools, balneotherapy, heating sport fields, runways at airports and other transportation hubs).
Ultrastructural observations on some dendroid and graptoloid graptolites and on Mastigograptus

Abstract: The ultrastructure of the dendroid genera Acanthograptus, Dendrograptus, Desmograptus, Ptilograptus and Dictyonena, the genus Mastigograptus, and the graptoloids Monograptus, Cyrtograptus, Neogothograptus, Paraplectograptus and Sokolovograptus is described. The cortical fibrils of most of the taxa bear a clockwise spiral ornament. There is a striking similarity between the cortical fabric of Dictyonema sp. and the extracellular plies of collagen recognized in extant metazoans. Cortical fibrils may be considered a collagen-like material and the matrix may be compared with a polysaccharide - protein complex. The matrix in Dictyonema and Ptilograptus is formed of regularly spaced interconnecting rods. However, the interconnecting rods are a feature external to the cortical fibrils, and therefore their spacing constitutes only an indirect evidence for the fibrils being formed of a collagen-like material.

Abstract: In the developed market economy, the complex capital structures are the substantial method of an economic cooperation between companies, both in terms of individual countries and across the world. Therefore, it is essential for particular countries to adopt similar solutions into their national regulations which would clearly and accurately standardize the issues of capital groupsí activity. This paper presents the problem of regulations pertaining to the creation and functioning of complex capital structures and their evaluation.

Abstract: Introduction. Brooke-Spiegler syndrome is a rare, autosomal dominantdisease. It is characterized by appearance of cylindromas, trichoepitheliomasand spiradenomas. Multiple cylindromas most frequently arelocalized on the scalp (turban tumours).Objective. To present coexistence of Brooke-Spiegler syndrome withpsoriasis vulgaris – that determined the mode of psoriasis therapy.Case report. A 59-year-old man was admitted to the hospital due toexacerbation of psoriasis vulgaris. The patient had many tumours onthe scalp and nodules around the nose and eyebrows. Histopathologicalinvestigation revealed multiple cylindromas and trichoepitheliomas.On the basis of the clinical picture and histopathological investigation,diagnosis of Brooke-Spiegler syndrome was established.Additionally, atypical nevus on the skin of the abdomen was recognised. Psoriatic lesions were treated with systemic acitretin and topicalointments.Conclusions. In the presented case, treatment of psoriasis vulgaris wasdetermined by coexistence of adnexal tumours and atypical nevus.
Cadmium-induced oxidative stress in potato tuber

Abstract: Short-term treatment of tuber discs of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) with cadmium chloride elevated the concentration of active oxygen species (.O-2, H202) and activated the antioxidative system. Two cultivars, Bintje and Bzura, susceptible and tolerant, respectively, to cadmium were examined. In more tolerant, control tissues the activity of ascorbic acid peroxidase (AAP) and catalase (CAT) was higher than in the sensitive ones. During first hours of stress, the inhibition of superoxide dismutase (SOD), CAT and AAP was observed and it comes from inactivation of enzymes by cadmium ions. A subsequent activity increase of the enzymes aroused earlier in tolerant tissues. It seems therefore, that tolerant tissues possess a more efficient antioxidative system.
Expression of steroidogenic enzymes in porcine polycystic ovaries.

Abstract: In the present study the expression pattern of the cholesterol side-chain cleavage cytochrome (P450(scc)), 3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3beta-HSD) and aromatase (P450(arom)) was analyzed in the health and polycystic ovaries of gilts by means of the Western blot and immunohistochemistry. The polycystic status of ovaries was induced by i.m. dexamethasone (DXM) injections on days 7-21 of the estrous cycle. Macroscopic observation of ovaries of DXM-treated gilts revealed the presence of cysts (1-2 cm in diameter, with a mean number of 7.0+/-1.2 per ovary), a decrease (P<0.05) in number of small follicles (1-3 mm in diameter), as well as the lack of medium-sized follicles (4-6 mm in diameter) and corpora lutea, as compared to the control animals. The expression of P450(scc) (P<0.01), 3beta-HSD (P<0.05) and P450(arom) (P<0.001) proteins in the cysts was higher than in the medium-sized follicles of the control gilts. Moreover, DXM injections resulted also in an enhancement (P<0.05) in the level of P450(scc) protein in the walls of small follicles as compared to the control gilts. Following DXM administration the immunoreactivity (IR) of P450(scc) in the primordial follicles was lower than in the control group. Comparing to the control gilts, the reaction for this enzyme in DXM-treated animals was observed in secondary follicles, while for 3beta-HSD, in primordial, primary, as well as secondary follicles. The immunostaining for P450(scc) (theca cells) and P450(arom) (granulosa cells) in the small follicles of the DXM-treated gilts were more prominent than those found in the gonads of control animals. However, IR for P450(scc) was not found in the granulosa cells of small follicles in the gilts receiving DXM. The intensity of P450(scc) and P450(arom) labelling was distinctly enhanced in the cysts as compared to the medium follicles of the control animals. Furthermore, in contrary to the medium follicles of the control animals, faint IR for 3beta-HSD was found in the granulosa cell layer of cysts. Our data revealed that both the expression of P450(scc), 3beta-HSD and P450(arom) and localization of these enzymes in polycystic ovaries were different from those, found under physiological conditions. These results suggested that above-mentioned enzymes may, by influencing the ovarian steroid synthesis, play an essential role in the creation and/or course of cystic ovarian disease.
Effect of Trichostatin A on CD4 surface density in peripheral blood T cells.

Abstract: Acetylation level of chromatin histones is maintained by histone acetylases (HATs) and deacetylases (HDACs) and correlates with transcriptional activity of genes. Trichostatin A (TSA) is HDAC inhibitor that causes various effects in cells, including immunomodulation. The CD4 antigen is a key coreceptor involved in activation of T helper cells. Using quantitative real-time PCR (RQ-PCR) and flow cytometry techniques, we estimated CD4 transcript level and density of CD4 antigen on the surface of TSA-treated stimulated and unstimulated peripheral T cells. We observed a dose dependent decrease in CD4 mRNA level and antigen density on surface of TSA-treated stimulated T cells. However, we did not observe any significant TSA effect on CD4 mRNA and protein expression in unstimulated T cells. Our data suggest that TSA may induce biosynthesis of factors responsible for negative regulation of CD4 antigen expression in stimulated T cells. Our investigation may support previous observation that this drug has immunosuppresive effect on primary T cells and may be useful in treatment of certain autoimmune disorders.
Size-Resolved Water-Soluble Ionic Composition of Ambient Particles in an Urban Area in Southern Poland  [PDF]

The ambient concentrations of PM-related anions (Cl-, NO3-, SO42-) and cations (Na+, NH4+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+), total and contained in the PM fractions, were investigated in a typical urban area within the Silesian Agglomeration. A DEKATI low pressure impactor (DLPI) was used to sample PM and separate it into 13 fractions. The PM concentrations were determined gravimetrically, the ion content of the PM water extractsby means of ion chromatography (Herisau Metrohm AG ion chromatograph). In general, sulfate, nitrate, and ammonia had the greatest ambient concentrations. PM1 contained over 60% of the PM-related sulfate and nitrate mass and 90% of the ammonia mass. Phenylalanine Ammonia Lyase Under Combined Effects of Enhanced UV-B Radiation and Allelopathy Stress

Abstract: This study examined the effects of UV-B radiation and allelochemical stress induced by ferulic acid (FA) on the activity of phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL; EC at metabolic and molecular levels in two cucumber genotypes differing in tolerance to cold and disease, in order to determine any interaction between stress effects and genotype response. Stresses were applied simultaneously, sequentially, and singly. In both genotypes, several days of UV radiation retarded growth up to 36%. The effect of FA was not significant. The response to a particular stress, including the effect on PAL activation, was enhanced by simultaneous application of the two stresses. PAL transcription was not correlated with the increase of PAL activity. Exposure to UV-B, FA, and combined UV-B and FA was detrimental to both genotypes but to different extents. The response was not correlated with the genotype of cold and disease sensitivity. PAL activity and its transcription seem to be involved in UV and allelochemical stress, but not related to the plants' tolerance of these stresses.

Abstract: Endosonografia (endoscopic ultrasonography - EUS), która stanowi po czenie endoskopii i badania ultrasonograficznego, nie nale y do rutynowych badań wykonywanych w celu oceny nadci nienia wrotnego. Metod z wyboru w diagnostyce ylaków jest nadal gastroduodenoskopia, pozwalaj ca na dok adn ocen jedynie zmian powierzchownych. Badanie endosonograficzne umo liwia bardziej szczegó ow ocen tej okolicy przewodu pokarmowego z mo liwo ci obrazowania zmian, niedost pnych badaniu endoskopowemu. Wydaje si , i w przysz o ci, przy wi kszej dost pno ci badania EUS mo e stanowi ono istotn metod diagnostyki, a nawet terapii u chorych z nadci nieniem wrotnym. Celem tego artyku u jest systematyczny przegl d obecnych i potencjalnych przysz ych zastosowań EUS w diagnostyce ylaków o dka.
