Intrinsic Qp at Mt. Etna from the inversion of rise times of 2002 microearthquake sequence

Abstract: About three-hundred microearthquakes, preceeding and accompanying the 2002-2003 Mt. Etna flank eruption, were considered in this study. On the high-quality velocity seismograms, measurements of the first half cycle of the wave, the so-called rise time ?, were carried out. By using the rise time method, these data were inverted to infer an estimate of the intrinsic quality factor Qp of P waves and of the source rise time ?0 of the events, which represents an estimate of the duration of the rupture process. Two kind of inversions were carried out. In the first inversion ?0 was derived from the magnitude duration of the events, assuming a constant stress drop and Qp was inferred from the inversion of reduced rise times ???0. In the second inversion both ?0 and Qp were inferred from the inversion of rise times. To determine the model parameters that realize the compromise between model simplicity and quality of the fit, the corrected Akaike information criterion was used. After this analysis we obtained Qp=57±42. The correlation among the inferred ?0 and Qp, which is caused by some events which concomitantly have high ?0 (>30 ms) and high Qp (>100) indicates that the technique used is able to model rise time versus travel time trend only for source dimensions less than about 80 m.
Stress tensor computations at Mount St. Helens (1995-1998)

Abstract: Fault plane solutions of 459 events occurring between 1995 and 1998 at Mount St. Helens (State of Washington, Northwest U.S.A.) were considered in order to infer the state of stress beneath the volcano. These events occurred in two distinct depth zones. The shallower zone is between 2 and 5.5 km, with shocks clustering in a tight cylindrical distribution about 1 km in radius directly beneath the crater. The deeper events are spread over a larger volume from 5.5 to 10 km depth and surround an aseismic zone below and slightly west of the lava dome. Faulting is characterized by a mixture of strike-slip, reverse and normal faults with maximum compression axes which do not cluster around a single direction. In the deep zone, between 5.5 and 10 km, P axes define a wheel-spoke pattern pointing radially away from the center of the aseismic zone. The 459 fault plane solutions were inverted for stress tensor parameters using the algorithm of Gephart and Forsyth. The inversion of the whole data set revealed that faulting was not produced by a uniform stress distribution. The subdivision of the zone into smaller volumes significantly reduced misfit and confidence areas of the solutions, whereas temporal subdivision of the sample did not lead to significant improvements in terms of stress uniformity. We suggest that the inhomogeneous stress field is consistent with a varying pressure source originating from the inferred crustal magma chamber and a thin conduit extending above it.
Information on subsoil geological structure in the city of Catania (Eastern Sicily) from microtremor measurements

Abstract: Nakamura s technique, or the H/V spectral ratio method, has been applied to microtremor measurements carried out in the urban area of Catania (Eastern Sicily) to obtain information on the geological structure of some sites,and to make a hypothesis on their seismic response. In general, sites located on soft soils or anthropic debris fillings have shown greater amplification at high frequencies (above 1 Hz). However, a strong lateral variation was observed in the frequency band, thus a denser grid of measurement points is necessary for a precise mapping of the resonant frequencies. In the low frequency range, between 0.1 and 1 Hz, a common peak around 0.2 Hz was observed. The fundamental resonant frequency inferred from the main peak in the H/V spectrum has been used to calculate the depth of the interface between the clays and the main reflector on the basis of the shear-wave velocity: it has been estimated as about 700 m.
Seismological investigations in the Gioia Tauro Basin (southern Calabria, Italy)

Abstract: This study provides new seismological information to characterize the seismically active area of the Gioia Tauro basin (southern Calabria, Italy). Seismic activity recorded by a temporary network from 1985 to 1994 was analyzed for focal mechanisms, stress tensor inversion, P-wave seismic attenuation and earthquake source parameters estimation. Fault plane solutions of selected events showed a variety of different mechanisms, even if a prevalence of normal dip-slip solutions with prevalent rupture orientations occurring along ca. NE-SW directions was observed. Stress tensor inversion analysis disclosed a region governed mainly by a NW-SE extensional stress regime with a nearly vertical ?1. These results are consistent with the structure movements affecting the studied area and with geodetic data. Furthermore, evaluation of P-waves seismic attenuation and earthquake source parameters of a subset of events highlighted a strong heterogeneity of the crust and the presence of fault segments and/or weakened zones where great stress accumulation or long-rupture propagation are hindered.

This piece is made up of a small introduction about the author and his work, a partial translation of Leiearvísir and some geographical notes.
Upper airway dynamics during negative expiratory pressure in apneic and non-apneic awake snorers

Abstract: Forty-eight subjects with sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and 7 healthy subjects, as non-snorer controls, underwent the NEP application of -5 and -7 cmH2O in the seated and supine position during wakefulness, after performing a sleep study. The upper airway collapsibility was assessed by computing the volume exhaled during the first 0.5 sec. (V,NEP0.5) and 1 sec. (V,NEP1) following the NEP start.Patients with severe (AHI ≥ 30) (n = 19) and mild-to-moderate (AHI <30 and >5) (n = 15) OSAH had lower V,NEP0.5 (340 ± 88 ml) as compared to snorers (AHI ≤ 5) (n = 14) (427 ± 101 ml; p < 0.01) and controls (n = 7) (492 ± 69 ml; p < 0.001) in the supine position with NEP -5 cmH2O. Less significant differences among the different groups were observed for V,NEP0.5 in the seated position with NEP -5 cmH2O and in both positions with NEP -7 cmH2O (only OSAH patients vs controls, p < 0.001). Similar results were obtained for V,NEP1 in either position by using both NEP -5 cmH2O and -7 cmH2O. In spite of this, a substantial overlapping of V,NEP0.5 and V,NEP1 between snorers and OSAH patients did not allow to identify a reliable diagnostic cut-off level. An inverse correlation with AHI was found for V,NEP0.5 in the supine position with NEP -5 cmH2O (rs = -0.46, p < 0.05) in severe OSAH patients.The awake OSAH patients exhibit values of V,NEP0.5 and V,NEP1 lesser than those of awake snorers. Abstract:

The paper describes the development results on one-dimensional (1D) asymptotic model of the formation kinetics for the objects (clusters) of subnuclear (quark) and subatomic (nuclear) matters. A concept of the objects distribution density wave φ(a, t) in space of sizes a lies in the basis for analytical description of the processes under consideration. The proposed formalism makes it possible to describe in an adequate way the final outcomes of the well-known catastrophic phenomena in the world of elementary particles. Mass characteristics of different processes of approach to equilibrium in nuclear reactions are calculated.

Abstract: As an application of the grand unified theory (GUT) to medicine, this paper introduces two natural nanomaterials—the gene and electromagnetic wave. They are involved in the proposed treatment of genetic and infectious diseases. It introduces the superstring as the fundamental building block of matter and the basic constituent of dark matter, one of the two fundamental states of matter. It also introduces the primum, unit of visible or ordinary matter, the other fundamental state of matter. They are convertible to each other by the action of basic cosmic or electromagnetic waves. Eleven biological laws define biology as a biological and physical theory. The gene is the primitive ingredient of living things and, therefore, the beginning of biological life and the virus the simplest living thing. Treatment ranges from genetic modification and alteration to remove undesirable symptom through genetic sterilization to stop the spread of the disease and outright destruction of the disease. Genetic sterilization and outright destruction apply also to infectious diseases. The paper concludes with a blueprint for research and development of appropriate technologies for the treatment.
Extensions of the Constructivist Real Number System  [PDF]

Abstract: The paper reviews the most consequential defects and rectification of traditional mathematics and its foundations. While this work is only the tip of the iceberg, so to speak, it gives us a totally different picture of mathematics from what we have known for a long time. This journey started with two teasers posted in SciMath in 1997: 1) The equation 1 = 0.99… does not make sense. 2) The concept \"\"?does not exist. The first statement sparked a debate that raged over a decade. Both statements generated a series of publications that continues to grow to this day. Among the new findings are: 3) There does not exist nondenumerable set. 4) There does not exist non-measurable set. 5) Cantor’s diagonal method is flawed. 6) The real numbers are discrete and countable. 7) Formal logic does not apply to mathematics. The unfinished debate between logicism, intuitionism-constructivism and formalism is resolved. The resolution is the constructivist foundations of mathematics with a summary of all the rectification undertaken in 2015, 2016 and in this paper. The extensions of the constructivist real number system include the complex vector plane and transcendental functions. Two important results in the 2015 are noted: The solution and resolution of Hilbert’s 23 problems that includes the resolution of Fermat’s last theorem and proof Goldbach’s conjecture.

Проанал зовано вплив дом шок он в зал за кобальту на х м чний склад отриманих зразк в Manganese dioxide samples have been prepared by the anode deposition from fluoride containing electrolytes based on manganese sulphate at the presence of additives of iron(II), cobalt(II) ions. Obtained materials were characterised with AAS and DTA. The influence of doping by ions of iron(II) and cobalt(II) on the chemical composition of the samples obtained has been analysed. Образцы диоксида марганца получены методом анодного осаждения из фторсодержащих электролитов на основе сульфата марганца в присутствии примесей ионов двухвалентных железа или кобальта. Полученные продукты характеризовались методами ААС и ДТА. Проанализировано влияние примесей ионов железа и кобальта на химический состав полученных образцов.
