Verma-type Modules for Quantum Affine Lie Algebras
Vyacheslav M. Futorny,Duncan J. Melville,Alexander N. Grishkov
Mathematics , 2000,
Abstract: Let g be an untwisted affine Kac-Moody algebra and M_J(lambda) a Verma-type module for g with J-highest integral weight lambda. We construct quantum Verma-type modules M_J^q(lambda) over the quantum group U_q(g), investigate their properties and show that M_J^q(lambda) is a true quantum deformation of M_J(\l) in the sense that the weight structure is preserved under the deformation. We also analyze the submodule structure of quantum Verma-type modules.

Applying economic guidelines for responsible tourism in a World Heritage Site

Koedoe : African Protected Area Conservation and Science , 2008, DOI: 10.4102/koedoe.v50i1.139
Abstract: This article proposes an integrated sustainable tourism development strategy for the Vredefort Dome as a World Heritage Site. In particular, it analyses the integration of the South African guidelines for responsible tourism applied to a local community. All tourism product owners in the Dome area formed part of this research that was conducted by means of a survey. The strategy that was formulated for the area aims to ensure that future generations will be able to utilise the resources in the same manner as the present generation. It is indicated that this intra-generational equity will only be possible through an integrated approach. The value of this research is its contribution to responsible tourism and, concurrently, its emphasis on the fact that tourism destinations in South Africa need to be developed in an integrated and sustainable manner. In order for the Vredefort Dome to be a World Heritage Site, and to exist as a protected area, it is imperative that the tourism product owners in the area realise their roles as custodians of this precious site. This proposition leads to the main aim of this study, namely to develop an integrated tourism development strategy for the Vredefort Dome as a World Heritage site. The results of the empirical study indicated that tourism stakeholders are prepared to improve the present situation in the Vredefort Dome and are willing to adjust their business practices in the future. Such changes in practice involve some strategic issues, and the economic, social and environmental strategies will give direction to this World Heritage Site to become more sustainable.
Microhabitat occupation and functional morphology of four species of sympatric agamid lizards in the Kyzylkum Desert, central Uzbekistan

Animal Biodiversity and Conservation , 2008,
Abstract: We examined microhabitat occupation and functional morphology of four sympatric agamid lizards (Phrynocephalus helioscopus helioscopus, P. interscapularis, P. mystaceus galli and Trapelus sanguinolentus) at three sites in the arid zone of central Uzbekistan. At two sites located in sand dunes, substrate attributes played a key role in habitat selection by three syntopic species. At a third flat, stony site, P. helioscopus selected habitat non-randomly, tending to occur close to sparse, low vegetation. Syntopic taxa were separated in morphospace, and there was a trend for taxa with proportionally longer limbs to have faster field escape speeds. Field escape distances and predator avoidance tactics differed between species, with two main escape strategies (crypsis or sand-diving following an escape sprint). We caution that broad-scale threatening processes such as over-grazing and salinity may be having a detrimental effect on microhabitat features important to terrestrial reptiles in Uzbekistan.
Butcher & Oemler Cluster A2111: A Head-on Merger at z = 0.23
Q. Daniel Wang,Melville Ulmer,Russell J. Lavery
Physics , 1997, DOI: 10.1093/mnras/288.3.702
Abstract: We present ROSAT PSPC and HRI observations of A2111, the richest galaxy cluster photometrically surveyed by Butcher & Oemler (1984). The cluster contains a distinct comet-shaped X-ray subcomponent, which appears hotter than the rest of the cluster. The galaxy and X-ray surface brightness distributions of the cluster show a similarly elongated morphology. These results suggest that the cluster is undergoing a head-on subcluster merger. This merger may also be responsible for the high fraction of gas-rich blue galaxies observed in the cluster. We have further detected a poor cluster along the merging axis and at a projected distance of about 5 Mpc from A2111.
Speaking to the experts and patients: Recommendations for improving ART adherence
J Frank, N Duncan
Health SA Gesondheid , 2009,
Abstract: This article reports on the fi ndings of a study that aimed to explore experts’ and patients’ opinions and recommendations regarding adherence to antiretroviral medication. This study was prompted firstly by the lack of existing local research on adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) and secondly by the importance of adherence, given the recent introduction of ART to the public health sector. Four experts and seven patients were interviewed. The experts had worked within the HIV/AIDS fi eld for at least two years while the patients (chosen from public antiretroviral roll-out programmes) had been on ART for at least six months. These interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic content analysis. This article focuses specifi cally on the recommendations for improving adherence that emerged from the experts' and patients' interviews. While the experts and patients generated two fairly distinct sets of recommendations (clearly informed by their different experiences and knowledge), both groups emphasised the importance of the mediating effects of social support and the healthcare provider–patient relationship in adherence to ART medication Opsomming: Gesprekke met kundiges en pasi nte: Aanbevelings ter verbetering van ART-nakoming.
