Abstract: In the present days of advanced electronic technologies in the field of communicationlike mobile phones, e-mail, internet etc. (and so forth) the incentive based mail surveys are beingpopular due to their cost effectiveness and rapid approach to individuals. But, a majordisadvantage appears as mail surveys are affected by a huge amount of non-response of units inthe sample. The post-stratified non-response (PSNR) scheme is used, in the stratified samplingset-up, when (i) frames of stratum are unknown and (ii) strata contain some non-responding units.This paper presents a general class of PSNR type sampling scheme by introducing three groupsof earmarked strata based on response pattern along-with two parameters pf the class. TheBayesian approach regarding utilization of prior knowledge (or guess) of response pattern isintroduced in the proposed class for estimating the population mean. Several properties of theclass are derived and the results are numerically supported.
Psychotic Disorders : An Overview

Abstract: Psychotic disorders are a serious condition where a person experiences a short period of losing contact with reality. It involves the number of psychotic illness. Risks associated with psychotic disorders are significant but with prompt care and treatment they can be prevented.Treatment of psychotic disorders involves the availability of number of medication, psychosocial treatment, complementary therapies and the pace of treatment. There is no medical test which can diagnose psychotic disorders, for this reason it is very important for health professional to get a full picture of the various patients suffering from psychotic disorders. This review covers the number of psychotic disorders with their brief explanation and treatment, which can be fruitful for health professional to treat psychiatric patients.
Anticandidal activity of Diospyros melanoxylon Roxb. Bark from Similipal Biosphere Reserve, Orissa, India

Abstract: The anticandidal activity and phytochemicals of bark of Diospyros melanoxylon Roxb. (Ebenaceae) was evaluated against four species of Candida viz. C. albicans, C. krusei, C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis. Both polar and nonpolar extracts viz. petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, ethanol, methanol and aqueous were prepared and studied for anticandidal activity using agar cup and broth dilution methods. Although all five extracts showed promising anticandidal activity against all tested Candida species, yet maximum activity was observed in ethanol extract. Minimum inhibitory concentration values for most of the extracts ranged from 0.375 to 6.0 mg/ml, while the least minimum fungicidal concentration value was observed at 3.0-6.0 mg/ml. Phytochemical analysis exhibited the presence of carbohydrates, protein and amino acids, tannin and phenolic compound, glycoside, steroid and sterols and flavonoids in different extracts. Thin layer chromatography bio-autography showed zones of inhibition 22 mm (C. parapsilosis) and 21 mm (C. tropicalis) with Rf value 0.72 for ethanol extract. These results exhibit the anticandidal activity of D. melanoxylon bark extracts, which may be useful in treatment of candidiasis. However, the active components responsible for antifungal activity need to be evaluated.
Enterococcal resistance - An overview

Abstract: Nosocomial acquisition of microorganisms resistant to multiple antibiotics represents a threat to patient safety. Here, we review the antimicrobial resistance in Enterococcus , which makes it important nosocomial pathogen. The emergence of enterococci with acquired resistance to vancomycin has been particularly problematic as it often occurs in enterococci that are also highly resistant to ampicillin and aminoglycoside thereby associated with devastating therapeutic consequences. Multiple factors contribute to colonization and infection with vancomycin resistant enterococci ultimately leading to environmental contamination and cross infection. Decreasing the prevalence of these resistant strains by multiple control efforts therefore, is of paramount importance.
Multidimensional QSAR Modeling of Amprenavir Derivatives as HIV-Protease Inhibitors  [PDF]

Abstract: A computational study has been performed on a series of 55 compounds having (S)-N-(3-(N-(cyclopean- tylmethyl)substituted-phenylsulfonamido)-2-hydroxypropyl)acetamide backbone as HIV-1 protease inhibitors. Various combinations of these specific inhibitors fragments were formed by breaking them at central alicyclic single bonds, while retaining the core. Standard Topomer 3D models were automatically constructed for each fragment, and a set of steric and electrostatic fields was generated for each set of topomers. The models generated showed r2 of 0.811 and crossvalidated r2 (q2) of 0.608. The other method used were Quasar and Raptor based on receptor-modelling concept (6D-QSAR) and this explicitly allows for the simulation of the induced fit, that yielded r2 of 0.574, cross-validated r2 (q2) of 0.504 and predictive r2 (q2) of 0.895 averaged over 200 models. This study has suggested the various type of substituent that can be attached to the core. The information obtained from these 3-D contour maps can be used for the design of amprenavir analogs possessing better protease inhibitory activity.
Self-Assembly of Microscale Parts through Magnetic and Capillary Interactions

Abstract: Self-assembly is a promising technique to overcome fundamental limitations with integrating, packaging, and general handling of individual electronic-related components with characteristic lengths significantly smaller than 1?mm. Here we describe the use of magnetic and capillary forces to self-assemble 280?μm sized silicon building blocks into interconnected structures which approach a three-dimensional crystalline configuration. Integrated permanent magnet microstructures provided magnetic forces, while a low-melting-point solder alloy provided capillary forces. A finite element model of forces between the magnetic features demonstrated the utility of magnetic forces at this size scale. Despite a slight departure from designed dimensions in the actual fabricated parts, the combination of magnetic and capillary forces improved the assembly yield to 8%, over approximately 0.1% achieved previously with capillary forces alone.
Correlation of radiological and clinical features of metanephric neoplasms in adults

Abstract: The main objective was to determine the clinical and radiological features of metanephric neoplasms. The tumors were diagnosed on histopathological examination. The clinical data and imaging features were retrospectively analyzed. Between 1998 and 2003, 3 patients underwent radical nephrectomy for renal masses turning out as metanephric neoplasms on histopathology. Two of these tumors were metanephric adenoma (MA) and one was metanephric adenofibroma (MAF). Clinical and radiological features were reviewed. All patients were adult females who presented with flank pain. Tumor was detected on screening ultrasound as a hyperechoic lesion. In all cases CT showed a hyper-attenuating exophytic lesion with cystic areas that enhanced with IV contrast. Based on combination of clinical and imaging features it may be possible to prospectively identify metanephric neoplasms and thus avoid unnecessary radical nephrectomy in favor of conservative surgery.
Synthesis, antimicrobial screening and structure-activity relationship of some novel 2-hydroxy-5-(nitro-substituted phenylazo) benzylidine anilines

Abstract: The title compounds were synthesized by the condensation of nitro-substituted 2-hydroxy-5- (nitro-substituted phenylazo) benzaldehyde (3) with different aromatic amines in presence of ethanol in good yield. The chemical structures were confirmed by IR, 1H NMR and elemental analysis. All the synthesized compounds (4a-j) have been evaluated for their in vitro antimicrobial activity against S. aureus , P. aeruginosa , E. coli , A. fumigatus , A. niger and C. neoformans .
Chemical management of Alternaria blight of broad bean

Abstract: Contaf (hexaconazole) inhibited percentage growth of Alternaria alternata in vitro. The other fungicides tested in order of effectiveness were thiram, aureofungin, Captaf (captan), Kitazin (iprobenfos), Topsin-M (thiophanate-methyl), Blitox-50 (copper oxychloride), Indofil M-45 (mancozeb + thiophanate-methyl), Kavach and Bavistin (carbendazim). Thiram (0.2%), Thiram (0.1%) + Topsin M (0.025%) and Captaf (0.2%) treated seeds of faba beans gave maximum germination and elimination of seedborne infection, respectively. Three sprays of Topsin M (0.1%) gave the best control of the disease in the field plus maximum yield and net benefit (Rs. 6.7) followed by Topsin M (0.05%) + Indofil M-45 (0.1%).
Enhancement of plant growth and suppression of collar rot of sunflower caused by Sclerotium rolfsii through fluorescent Pseudomonas

Abstract: Ten isolates of fluorescent pseudomonads were isolated from rhizosphere of sunflower, potato, maize and groundnut. All the isolates produced fluorescent pigment in succinate broth and displayed siderophore production. Production of hydrocyanic acid (HCN)and indole acetic acid (IAA) by all the isolates was recorded besides phosphate solubilization. Out of the 10 strains, Pseudomonas PS I and PS II were found most potential. Bacterization of sunflower seeds with fluorescent Pseudomonas PS I and PS II resulted in increased seed germination, root length, shoot height, fresh and dry weight of roots and shoots, and yield of sunflower. Seed bacterization with strains of fluorescent Pseudomonas PS I and PS II reduced incidence of collar rot by 69.8% and 56.9%, respectively, in Sclerotium rolfsii-infested SOil, making the organism a potential biocontrol agent against collar rot of the sunflower.
