Aspects of Transformer Fires in Brazil  [PDF]
Dayse Duarte
Open Journal of Safety Science and Technology (OJSST) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojsst.2012.23009
Abstract: For the last 20 years blackouts have been included in the list of major disasters that includes storms, hurricanes, earthquakes and floods. Therefore consumers have become increasingly aware of fires and explosions involving oil-filled transformers located in power plants or substations. Owing to several fires in transformers, the summer of 1997 became known to the people of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as the The Summer of Blackouts. The losses incurred by a blackout are not merely financial. In fact, the loss of operational utility by fire represents only a minor part of the total overall cost in terms of energy availability, human loss and organizational reputation. The costs resulting from the lack of fire risk management in the electrical power industry are no longer acceptable to Brazilian society. The objective of this paper is to address important aspects of transformer fire risk in the context of the Brazil. The aim is to help engineers recognize the implications of decisions concerning the operation of transformers over their life cycles.
Two Opposed Models of Approaching the Relationship between Art and Society and the Proposal of “Social-Aesthetic Constructs” as a Possibility of Mediation  [PDF]
Rodrigo Duarte
Art and Design Review (ADR) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/adr.2018.61001
Abstract: The objective of this article is to investigate two opposed models of approaching the relationship between art and society. The first one—that of Jacques Rancière—stresses the idea of aesthetic autonomy as a result of a historical process that began with Kant’s Critique of Judgement, reaching its most developed form in contemporaneity, and the second model, represented here by Richard Shusterman (inspired by John Dewey pragmatist aesthetics), focuses on the deep roots that artistic phenomena have in society and culminates with his analysis of the hip hop culture. Taking into account as well their respectively fruitfulness as some of their limitations and inspired by Theodor Adorno, I propose the concept of “social-aesthetic construct”, which is meant to be a mediation between the aforementioned opposed models.
Duarte Duarte, Ana Rosa;
Estudios de cultura maya , 2008,
Abstract: in this article i analyze the processes of representation and self-representation of the yucatec maya in sáastal: the children of the sacred grace, a 55-minute video-fiction. sáastal presents a dramatic account of the everyday life of a yucatec maya family as imagined both by the maya and non-maya participating in the production. i examine how this imaginary is influenced by the coexistence of the mayan culture with the diverse civilizatory politics, such as the politics of development, modernization, and globalization. it is argued that this coexistence has led us, the yucatec maya, to adopt "soft identities" which allow us to act according to the circumstances. in sáastal we therefore perform, recreate and instrumentalize our culture and, in this way, convert our own identities into fictions.

Duarte, Newton;
Educa??o & Sociedade , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73302003000200015
Abstract: this paper defends that donald sch?n's works on professional education in general and more particularly on teachers' education are based both on an epistemology that devalues scientific knowledge and on a pedagogy that devalues school knowledge. a critical analysis of sch?n's concepts of tacit knowledge (or reflection-in-action) and school knowledge is presented. this critical analysis is inserted in the context of a criticism of the currently hegemonic epistemological ideas in the field of studies on teachers' education.
Duarte, Newton;
Educa??o & Sociedade , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73302000000200004
Abstract: vygotsky, in his manuscript concrete human psychology, asserts that the relationship ontogeny-philogeny in cultural development is different from the same relationship in organic development: the human fetus develops itself without an interection with a mature biotype, whereas in cultural development this interaction is the most important force for all development. thus, this article analysis the relationship between the dialectics present in vygotsky and in marx, substantiated in methodological and epistemological reflexion done by marx on the text whereby he asserts that "the human anatomy is the key for monkey anatomy". the conclusion of this article defends that vygotsky's psychology supports a pedagogy which one appreciates the conduction of children to learn the highest objective knowledge produce by all mankind.
Duarte, Adriana;
Educar em Revista , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-40602010000400005

Esquematismo e semiforma??o
Duarte, Rodrigo;
Educa??o & Sociedade , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73302003000200007
Abstract: this paper aims at showing the relationship between "theory of semi-erudition" by adorno and his (and horkheimer's) suggestion found in the dialectic of enlightenment, that the culture industry removes the individual capacity to "schematize", that is - according to kant's point of view in the critique of pure reason - to refer their sensible perception to fundamental concepts. since in the dialectic of enlightenment, in the chapter on the culture industry, the authors do not develop this idea, i try to find a development of it in the part entitled "elements of anti-semitism", particularly in the section on the "false projection". it is then possible to show that the same conception of "semi-erudition", which, in the dialectic of enlightenment, links the theory on anti-semitism to the critique to the culture industry, may be considered as a concept applied to educational issues.
Duarte, Newton;
Educa??o e Pesquisa , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-97022006000300012
Abstract: the thesis of the end of the meta-narratives defended by postmodernism implies the negation of the universality of culture. it is not just the fact that human culture has not yet achieved true universality, and not even the fact that the ruling classes have so far subjected human culture to their own private interests and, to that end, have suffocated and destroyed much of the wealth contained in local cultures. to postmodernism the problem does not reside in the bourgeois vision of human culture, but in the very idea that a universal culture can exist. postmodernists declare that any educational project based on the idea of the existence or possibility of a universal culture is a conservative, authoritarian, ethnocentric project. this text argues for the thesis that the marxian conception of the historic process of constitution of the universal human wealth incorporates the theoretical elements necessary to overcome the false option, postulated by the various postmodernist trends, between ethnocentrism and cultural relativism. in marx, the universalization of human culture in the capitalist society takes place through the universalization of the exchange value of the goods as the fundamental mediation of social relations. it is, therefore, a dialectical process in which the humanization and the alienation of the human genre and of the individuals occur at the same time. the text concludes with the presentation of the challenges that, based on this marxian conception of universal wealth, must be faced in the process of constructing a marxist pedagogy.
