Abstract: the main objective of the present review of the literature was to provide an overview of the major longitudinal and mixed longitudinal studies focusing on somatic growth, biological maturation, and, more recently, physical performance. we selected studies conducted in the usa, europe, and portuguese speaking countries. first, the main theoretical considerations, general characteristics, study designs, statistical analyses, and methodological challenges of the data were presented. next, we provided an overview of the most important longitudinal and mixed longitudinal studies. finally, the major challenges of the ongoing studies were outlined.

Abstract: The principle purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the major longitudinal and mixed longitudinal studies that focused on somatic growth, biological maturation and more recently also on physical performance. Only selected studies that were conducted in USA, Europe and Portuguese speaking countries will be considered. First, the main theoretical considerations, general characteristics, the study design and statistical analyses and the methodological challenges of the data will be outlined. Further, an overview is provided of the most important longitudinal and mixed longitudinal studies. Finally, the major challenges of the ongoing studies are highlighted.
Phytosociological aspects and weed management using cover crops on organic conilon coffee plantations / Aspectos fitossociológicos e manejo de plantas espontaneas utilizando espécies de cobertura em cafeeiro Conilon organico

Abstract: Weeds can bring benefits to agriculture, but when incorrectly managed they can compete with commercial crops for resources. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect that cover crops, associated with Coffea canephora cv. Conilon, imposes to the weed community. Cover crops were planted between the rows of a 6.5 years old organic coffee plantation spaced 2.0 x 1.5 m. The experiment was arranged in a complete randomized block design, with four replications, in a factorial scheme with the following treatments: control, Pennisetum glaucum and the legume plants: Canavalia ensiformis, Mucuna deeringiana and Cajanus cajan, with and without Rizobium inoculation. Cover crops dry weight and nutrient contents on coffee trees were determined. Weeds density, frequency, relative abundance, importance value index and plant similarity index were also determined. Twenty seven weed species were identified, with special emphasis on Bidens subalternans and Commelina benghalensis. Cover crops promote modifications on the succession dynamics of weeds and do not interfere with the development of the coffee trees. Canavalia ensiformis, Mucuna deeringiana and Pennisetum glaucum help on weed control. As plantas espontaneas competem com as culturas por recursos escassos, quando mal manejadas. No entanto, podem trazer benefícios à agricultura. O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o efeito que plantas de cobertura, consorciadas com Coffea canephora cv. Conilon, imp em à comunidade de plantas espontaneas. Plantas de cobertura foram semeadas nas entrelinhas de um cafezal de 6,5 anos conduzido sob manejo organico, com espa amento de 2,0 x 1,5 m. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repeti es, num arranjo fatorial com tratamentos adicionais: testemunha, milheto – Pennisetum glaucum, e as leguminosas feij o-de-porco – Canavalia ensiformis, mucuna-an – Mucuna deeringiana, e feij o-guandu – Cajanus cajan, com e sem inocula o com rizóbio. Foram determinados a matéria seca das plantas de cobertura e as concentra es de nutrientes no cafeeiro. Determinou-se ainda a densidade, frequência e abundancia relativas, assim como o índice de valor de importancia e de similaridade das plantas espontaneas. Foram identificadas 27 espécies, destacando-se Bidens subalternans e Commelina benghalensis. As espécies de cobertura promovem modifica es na popula o de plantas espontaneas e n o prejudicam o cafeeiro. Feij o-de-porco, mucuna-an e milheto auxiliam na supress o de plantas espontaneas.
Prehospital care: nursing professors’ perception ahead caring to multiple victims

Abstract: a qualitative study, from phenomenological approach. The sample was composed of five nurses from University professorJosé do Rosário Vellano Unifenas, which has experience and who work or have worked in prehospital care from August2006 to September 2008, directed by the following question: what is your perception before the assistance pre-hospitalto multiple victims? Results: from the analysis of the data, obtained through testimony, it was possible determine fivecategories: 1) events with multiple victims: living with the stress all the time; 2) the criterion for assessing the scene andvictims: putting into practice the training; 3) training and professional recognition: important aspects in the quality ofcare; 4) work in teams: fundamental aspect in response to multiple victims; 5) experiencing traumatic scenes: how to dealwith death. Conclusion: the results show that serve multiple victims is a difficult, stressful, delicate, requiring knowledgea lot and practice skill on the part of professional, and an emotional balance and great human sensitivity.

Abstract: objective: this study aimed to analyze outcome, clinical and epidemiological characteristics and severity factors in adult patients admitted with a diagnosis of infection by virus a (h1n1) to public and private intensive care units, in paraná, brazil. methods: cohort study of medical charts of patients older than 12 years admitted to 11 intensive care units in 6 cities in the state of parana, brazil, during a period of 45 days, with diagnosis of swine influenza. the diagnosis of infection with a (h1n1) was made by real time polymerase chain reaction (rt-pcr) of nasopharyngeal secretion, or strong clinical suspicion when other causes had been ruled out (even with negative rt-pcr). descriptive statistics were performed, analysis by the chi square test was used to compare percentages and the student's t test for continuous variables with univariate analysis, assuming a significance level of p <0.05. results: there were 63 adult patients admitted with a diagnosis of h1n1, 37 (58.7%) being rt-pcr positive. most patients were young adults (65% under 40 years of age) with no gender predominance and high incidence of obesity (27.0% with body mass index > 30). mean of the acute physiologic chronic health evaluation ii (apache ii) score was 15.0 + 8.1. mortality in the intensive care unit was 39.7%. the main factors associated with mortality were: positive rt-pcr, low levels of initial pao2/fio2, high initial levels of urea and lactate dehydrogenase, required level of positive end expiratory pressure, need for the prone position and vasopressors. conclusions: adult patients with a (h1n1) virus infection admitted to intensive care units had a high risk of death, particularly due to respiratory impairment. positive rt-pcr, urea and lactic dehydrogenase, low initial pao2/fio2 and high levels of peep were correlated with higher mortality.

Abstract: this study aims to gather empirical evidence usually skimmed by corporate reformers of education in brazil and present some of the characteristics that mark the proposal of "new reformers". the categories that define this central educational policy involve a combination of accountability, meritocracy and privatization. this study presents the american production because it is privileged in this country; these ideas were more widely tested with results that characterize them as a true lost decade for american education. in brazil, these ideas are growing particularly at the state and municipal education. it is intended to warn of the risks of these policies as evidenced in research and educational practice.

Abstract: negotiated quality is proposed as a counter-regulation alternative favoring complex change processes at school. this concept sees quality as produced through an institutional assessment process, collectively built, whose reference is the political-pedagogical project of school. the text substantiates the unsuitability of strategies that "spread" changes from a center, without any reference to the actual problems of school. it analyzes the concept of public services so as to understand its peculiar characteristics. since civil servants have job security and work within specific relationships to power, money and time, it attempts to show that, as was the case with the neoliberal public policies (psdb-pfl), the participative public policies (pt and allies) will also be faced with problems if they do not acknowledge such specificities and implement negotiated assessment processes that create agreed commitments and stimulate new organization forms in the internal relationships of schools.

Abstract: this study criticizes the ways mec-inep is implementing assessment policies based on "responsabilization". it also proposes an alternative form to deal with the problem based on "negotiated quality" in a bilateral involvement of the state and school. it suggests initial elements for a state policy in the field of assessment and sees the process of the institutional assessment of school as the link between the external assessment of system and school and its professionals. it alerts to the fact that unilateral responsabilization policies will lead to configure schools for the poor and schools for the rich. it also highlights the risk that the external assessment systems centralized at government level conceal, with such statistical indicators as the ideb, the difficulties faced by the popular classes to learn within school, and legitimate strategies that only lead to deferring their exclusion - despite a discourse of transparency and responsibility.

Abstract: this paper aims at showing the concealed forms that the neoliberal public policies implemented in order to reduce the economical, social and political costs of the objective forms of exclusion (repetition and desertion). without modifying the essence of school selectivity, they created a field of subjective exclusion (auto-exclusion, exclusion between cycles, "trilhas de progress?o continuada differenciadas"), in which the very person excluded is responsible for their exclusion. three theses are presented in an attempt to understand this movement. the first one deals with the conversion of the objective exclusion into subjective exclusion. the second one shows how the mechanisms of informal assessment function to create "trilhas de progress?o continuada diferenciadas" in the organization proposals by cycles of continued progression. finally, the last one pinpoints the "deresponsibilization" of school with regards to the schooling of the lower classes ("learn to learn"), in the wake of the "deresponsibilization" of the very minimal state proposed by the current public policies. finally, by contrast, the author presents some elements for an alternative policy directed to the training responsibility of school; elements aimed at transforming the relationship among people and between them and nature.

Abstract: this paper explores the impact of both the neoliberal reforms and the naive post-modernization of thought as articulated tools to deconstruct the progressive thought and go back to positivist/pragmatist theses in the field of education. concealed as uncertainties, exalted as differences, justified as chaos, these tools attempt to prevent us from thinking about the future and open spaces to plan it according to the needs of capital, enabling all kinds of valorization. the text then strives to show how, based on informal assessment, the 1990s' educational reforms developed in this context favored new forms of exclusion from within the educational system, whose function of training for submission remained untouched through the occultation of the debate on the objectives of education.
