The educational dimension of pastoral youth service
Dra. Miriam Gallego
Alteridad : Revista de Educación , 2013,
Abstract: The educational dimension of pastoral youth service is highlighted by the fact that it is about education on faith. Faith education means taking a young person towards a personal encounter with God. This fact is also known as an experience with God or religious experience. The religious experience favors cognitive and affective development, desire of the absolute, relationships development, commitments with justice, and the construction of a personal life and social history; in this regard, the religious experience turns into an educational one.The evangelist deed in the pastoral youth service, does not occur through isolated actions but through a process, that is, through a set of educational dynamisms that bring the young person to open up to his/her personal and social reality, to search for answers to his/her questions, be active in society, and build a life project. In pastoral ministries each gesture is, at the same time and with the same intensity, an educational event and a proposal of youth’s lives about God’s mysteries. The pastoral youth service brings educational means —objectives, contents, educational sites, processes, methodologies, people responsible for education, etc.— that can be no doubt evaluated.
Religious keys in Aparecida experience: a contribution to youth ministry
Dra. Miriam Gallego

Evaluating Cultural and Technical Obstacles in School-Based ICT Programs: An Analysis of Two Case Studies  [PDF]
Miriam Judge
Creative Education (CE) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2013.49B006
Abstract:

The emergence of a knowledge-based economy has been identified as a central trend in modern economies as a result of the increasingly important role of information technology and learning in economic performance. In recognition of this most governments throughout the developed world have responded with a series of policy initiatives since the late 1990’s to either introduce or significantly increase information technology provision in schools to prepare students for life in the twenty first century. Ireland, with its growing reliance on the knowledge economy sector for employment and continued economic prosperity, developed its own policy initiative for computerizing the nations’ schools known as“Schools IT 2000: A Policy Framework for the New Millennium”. It was an ambitious programme with high expectations for the integration of ICT (Information and Communications Technology) in education. This paper examines two longitudinal educational ICT projects in Ireland in the first decade of the new millennium to query how far schools have travelled along the information superhighway and to ponder how well the catalytic capabilities of ICT have become embedded in the realities of classroom life and teachers pedagogic practices, with attendant implications for Ireland’s economic development.

Abstract: microsatellite polymorphism was studied in a sample of 39 traditional rice (oryza sativa l.) varieties and 11 improved varieties widely planted in cuba. the study was aimed at assessing the extent of genetic variation in traditional and improved varieties and to establish their genetic relationship for breeding purposes. heterozygosity was analyzed at each microsatellite loci and for each genotype using 10 microsatellite primer pairs. between varieties genetic relationship was estimated. the number of alleles per microsatellite loci was 4 to 8, averaging 6.6 alleles per locus. higher heterozygosity (h) was found in traditional varieties (htv = 0.72) than in improved varieties (hiv = 0.42), and 68% of the total microsatellite alleles were found exclusively in the traditional varieties. genetic diversity, represented by cluster analysis, indicated three different genetic groups based on their origin. genetic relationship estimates based on the proportion of microsatellite loci with shared alleles indicated that the majority of traditional varieties were poorly related to the improved varieties. we also discuss the more efficient use of the available genetic diversity in future programs involving genetic crosses.

Abstract: background: the outbreaks of shigella sonnei in our environment frequently involve day care centers and elementary schools. an outbreak of shigellosis in a lower-class district is reported. the purpose of this study is that of pinpointing the center of infection, the means of contagion, the characteristics of those infected and of assessing the suitability of the measures taken. methods: for monitoring the outbreak over time, a combined observational timeline study was conducted within a territory the bounds of which were marked by means of the conventional epidemiological monitoring variables (time, place and individual). the infectivity of the center of infection (contagion rate) is analyzed by age, gender and school; rate ratio and percentage attributable thereto. results: on a time-related basis, the outbreak in question started on week 46/97 and ended on week 8/98. this outbreak involved 218 individuals (110 males and 108 females) totaling 5.46% of the district. the highest frequency was found among the 0-4 age group (43.6%), 29.4% in day care (70.32% contagion rate) with a relative risk of 3.9 (95% ci: 2.57-5.93) and 74.36% attributable percentage. the rate ratio between day care and the schools in the district in question is 5.62 (95% ci: 4.33-7.31). stool cultures were taken and analyzed in 84 cases (38.5%), shigella sonnei being detected in 38 cases (17.4%). antibacterial treatment (amoxilcilin-clavulan) was set out and individual and group health and safety measures were employed. conclusions: the long communicability period and the small number of viable microorganisms necessary for causing this disease fostered its being passed on from one person to another at school and in the home. the measures employed effectively confined the contagion of the infectious agent at the schools.

Miriam Thake, Athanasis Kalantzis
Open Journal of Stomatology (OJST) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojst.2013.31013
Abstract:

The incidence of close and involved tongue resection margins for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) were reviewed with the aim to identify any possible need for change in the surgical approach to glossectomies. The histopathological reports of 101 partial glossectomies for SCC between 2006 and 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. Results: Overall 52 (51.5%) patients had one or more close or involved margin and 9 (8.9%) had both close and involved margins. 42 (41.5%) patients had close margins and 11 (10.9%) had involved margins. The inferior/lateral muscoal margin was most frequently close/involved (32%) followed by deep margin (27%). The anterior margin was least close/involved (5%). The posterior and superior/medical margins were close/involved in 12% and 11% of cases respectively. Conclusions: 52.5% of patients had close or involved margins following surgery, potentially requiring further treatment to avoid an increased risk of tumour recurrence and the associated increase in morbidity and mortality. The inferior/lateral and deep margins were most frequently involved possible due to the anatomical difficulties visualising and dissecting these margins. The potential explanations for these disparities and possible solutions are discussed.
