Algunos aspectos ligados a la Influenza porcina
Dr. Juan Carlos Fain Binda.
REDVET , 2009,

Abstract: Background: There is a high prevalence of infection by Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) and patients with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in Argentina. Aim: To study cattle and pigs as a possible reservoir of EHEC in Argentina. Material and methods: One hundred two healthy animals (68 cattles and 31 pigs) from a livestock in Argentina, were studied. Stool samples were obtained with a rectal swab. The strains were identified by DNA hybridization with specific gene probes detecting Shiga-like toxin 1 and 2 (Stx1, Stx2), and hly gen related to fimbrial adhesin-associated plasmid. EHEC strains were serogrouped using comercial antisera. Results: EHEC was isolated from 30 out of 68 bovines cultures (44.1%) and from 25 out of 31 pigs (58.1%). Isolates carrying genes codifying both Stx1 and Sxt2, were observed in 50% of cattle and 63.9% of pigs. The gene which codifies for hemolysin (associated to fimbrial adhesin) was observed in about 41% of EHEC isolates. Strains belonging to serogroups O26, O111, and O157 were isolated from cattle, and O111, and O157 from pigs. Conclusions: The high percentage of EHEC in both cattle and pigs and the presence of human infection-associated serogroups, suggests that these animals are a reservoir of EHEC associated with disease in humans (Rev Méd Chile 2000; 128: 1335-41).

Revista Cubana de Cardiología y Cirugía Cardiovascular , 2010,
Abstract: We report a patient with personal antecedents of arterial hypertension (Class II C) that enteredin the Hospital “Hermanos Ameijeiras” with a severe pain of sudden appearance in theanterior thoracic region and stabbing character that irradiated to the back. A transthoracicechocardiogram was performed, showing a very mobile intimal flap at the level of the aorticroot, extended until the abdominal aorta and the left renal artery, suggestive of dissection. The echocardiography is one of the more versatile non invasives techniques due to its clinicalapplications in the whole spectrum of the cardiovascular pathologies. It is quick, cheap, broadly available, it doesn't use contrast substances and is realizable in any dependence ofthe hospital, avoiding the transfer of the patient, habitually unstable. The patient receivedsurgical therapy and evolved satisfactorily.

Synthesis and Characterization of New Chiral Monoanionic [ON] Ancillary Phenolate Ligands  [PDF]
Pascal Binda, Leslie Glover
International Journal of Organic Chemistry (IJOC) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ijoc.2014.43020
Abstract: Three new chiral monoanionic [ON] ancillary phenolate ligands with varying pendant arms have been synthesized in moderate to high yields (50% - 85%) via Mannich-type condensation reaction of chiral substituted phenol, formaldehyde and (+)-bis-[(R)-1-phenylethyl]amine. These new organic compounds were fully characterized via nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H and 13C) and elemental analysis. The newly synthesized ligands are suitable candidates for metal-catalyzed ring-opening of lactones and asymmetric catalysis.
Nintendo® Wii™ and a Physical Activity Routine: Effective Therapeutic Interventions in the Older Adult Population?  [PDF]

Abstract:

Occupational therapists work with individuals across the lifespan to promote health and wellness. “Occupational therapy promotes health and wellbeing through active involvement in meaningful occupations. By helping clients eliminate barriers, enhance their self-management skills, improve their performance of daily activities and adopt healthy habits and routines, occupational therapy unlocks the door to participation across the lifespan” (AOTA, 2010). In today’s world, health and wellness-related services are in demand for those aged 65 and older. As life expectancy rates continue to rise, there is an increase in concern for the field of occupational therapy to find a successful and efficient way to meet the needs of the growing number of older adults (National Center for Health Statistics, 2006). The idea that physical activity can be a beneficial occupation in the elderly has been examined and proved effective as a means of enhancing the quality of life in this population. “Although functional impairments due to the aging process seem to be inevitable, functional limitations due to an inactive lifestyle might be reversed. Indeed, it has been suggested that physically active lifestyles may contribute to improving or maintaining health and wellness” (Fletcher, Gulanick, & Braun, 2005). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of two different physical activity programs on individuals aged 65 and older. The variables that were examined were functional skills (activities of daily living), balance skills, and overall upper extremity function. This study looked at two forms of physical activity to determine their individual effects on functional skills, balance, and overall upper extremity function in this population. The two physical activity interventions were the Nintendo Wii gaming system and a videotaped exercise routine.
