Green Environment: Decision-Making and Power Utility Optimization towards Smart-Grid Options  [PDF]
Dolores DeGroff
Smart Grid and Renewable Energy (SGRE) , 2010, DOI: 10.4236/sgre.2010.11005
Abstract: Decision-making toward prudent energy conservation is a primary issue in the power utility management while con-ceiving green environment. Presented in this paper are relevant considerations and prudent ways of decision-making thereof. Examples are furnished to illustrate the underlying considerations and are discussed using practical examples. Specifically green ambient is considered and the underlying payoff resulting from each combination of strategies adopted (or courses of action taken) by the technology-option participants is evaluated. Game-theoretic pursuits are followed.
El trabajo sexual en la mira: polémicas y estereotipos
Juliano, Dolores;
Cadernos Pagu , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-83332005000200004
Abstract: the rigid norms assigned to gender roles sanction some behaviors by women as deviant and punish them with stigmatization. the worst stigmatization falls on sexual laborers. religious, ethnic and class prejudices converge in this situation. the stigmatizing discourse is shared by political sectors from both right and left. it is even supported by some feminist sectors and this generated an important polemic between abolitionists and defenders of the prostitutes' human rights. although international laws on the matter are becoming more nuanced, the matter is not resolved and discrimination furnishes the bases for the exercise of symbolic and material violence against these women.
Isaías y Jeremías: los profetas de Isidoro de Sevilla en Sentencías
Castro, Dolores;
História (S?o Paulo) , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-90742012000200010
Abstract: the biblical text represents a fundamental part of isidore of seville′s sentencias. this work, written towards the year 633, contains a large number of biblical quotations. although isidore managed to use a variety of references from both testaments, some books, passages and biblical episodes are mentioned more systematically than others. this is the case of the prophetic literature, especially the books of isaiah and jeremiah. this article will focus mainly in the analysis of these two prophets and how their voices were used and introduced in the work of isidore. the main purpose is to analyze the relation between the prophetic message and the reasons that motivated isidore to give isaiah and jeremiah a predominant position inside his work. during the viith century, the political and religious context raised the question of the kingdom′s unity. in this scenario, the prophetic message allowed isidore to communicate his preoccupations regarding fundamental topics such as disobedience, the final judgment and the organization of the church.
Diagnóstico de muerte encefálica
Escudero,Dolores;
Medicina Intensiva , 2009,
Abstract: brain death has been recognized by the scientific community as the person's death, and accepted in the legislation of different countries. brain death is defined as the irreversible ending of the functions of all the intracranial neurological structure in both the brain and brain stem. this clinical situation appears when intracranial pressure exceeds the patient's systolic blood pressure, leading to brain circulatory arrest. the most frequent are cerebral hemorrhage and cranioencephalic trauma. clinical diagnostic must be done by doctors with expertise in neurocritical patient treatment. this diagnosis is based on a systematic, complete and extremely rigorous clinical examination that confirms a non-reactive coma, absence of brain stem reflex, and absence of spontaneous breathing. instrumental tests may be obligatory in some cases, this depending on each country. electroencephalogram and evoked potentials are the electrophysiological tests used. in patients treated with sedative drugs, cerebral blood flow evaluation tests, such as cerebral angiography, transcranial doppler or 99tc-hmpao scintigraphy, will be used. more than 92% of the transplants performed in spain are performed with brain death donor organs. brain death confirmation is a high responsibility act, with medical, ethical and legal significance since it requires removal of all artificial support, or organs extraction for transplant. extensive knowledge on its diagnostic and correct decision making avoid unnecessary use of resources and improves management of organs for transplant.
Terapia hormonal da menopausa
Pardini, Dolores;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia & Metabologia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27302007000600007
Abstract: although estrogen has been clinically available for more than 6 decades, women have been confused by different opinions regarding the risks and benefits of menopausal hormone therapy (ht), estrogen therapy (et), and estrogen-progestin therapy (ept). the main indication for ht use in postmenopausal women remains the relief of vasomotor symptoms and vulvovaginal atrophy, and is effective in the prevention of osteoporosis. in other areas of research, notably in cardiovascular and central nervous system effects, the recent literature has produced conflicting results. treatment for up to 5 years does not add significantly to lifetime risk of breast cancer, but significantly decreases bone loss and risk of osteoporotic fractures. some women may be susceptible to early thrombotic risk, but when appropriate ht is given after individual clinical evaluation, the benefits will far outweigh any potential risks and the treatment should be recommended. clinical research continues into genetic factors influencing the response to et/ht, different estrogen formulations, different modes of delivery and lower-dose options. patients and clinicians should make treatment decisions on the basis of an individual?s needs and risks, and should enhance a woman?s ability to undergo the menopausal transition with minimal disruption to her quality of life. in women experiencing distressing climacteric symptoms during the peri and postmenopause there is conclusive evidence from abundant randomized controlled trials that systemic hormone therapy (ht) of any type affords symptom relief, with no alternative treatment producing similar effect. future research is needed to identify new indications for hrt and to diminish or abolish its potential risks.

Diet-gene interactions between dietary fat intake and common polymorphisms in determining lipid metabolism
Corella, Dolores
Grasas y Aceites , 2009,
Abstract: Current dietary guidelines for fat intake have not taken into consideration the possible genetic differences underlying the individual variability in responsiveness to dietary components. Genetic variability has been identified in humans for all the known lipid metabolim-related genes resulting in a plethora of candidate genes and genetic variants to examine in diet-gene interaction studies focused on fat consumption. Some examples of fat-gene interaction are reviewed. These include: the interaction between total intake and the 514C/T in the hepatic lipase gene promoter in determining high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) metabolism; the interaction between polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and the 75G/A polymorphism in the APOA1 gene plasma HDL-C concentrations; the interaction between PUFA and the L162V polymorphism in the PPARA gene in determining triglycerides and APOC3 concentrations; and the interaction between PUFA intake and the 1131TC in the APOA5 gene in determining triglyceride metabolism. Although hundreds of diet-gene interaction studies in lipid metabolism have been published, the level of evidence to make specific nutritional recommendations to the population is still low and more research in nutrigenetics has to be undertaken.
Dolores Marcos
Foro Interno : Anuario de Teoría Política , 2004,
Abstract: This article provides a discussion of the concepts of politics, sovereignty and man in the thinking of CARL SCHMITT and THOMAS HOBBES, clarifying certain similarities and differences between the two authors. It attempts to understand the well-known theory of the German author concerning that which is political, as drawn from the struggle and distinction between friend/foe in light of the threat posed by the Hobbesian state of nature and the meaning of war. These ideas call for a State that does not arise as the result of a contract, but from unity based on exclusions, according to SCHMITT. The need for an absolute power that can protect and coerce connects with certain features of HOBBES′ Leviathan. Finally, the conflictive dimension of man is understood as essential for the political realm, which is based, precisely, on egotistical and dangerous features in human beings. Understanding this sphere turns out to be essential fordeveloping an approach to the resolution of conflicts.
The solar dust ring
Dolores Maravilla
Geofísica internacional , 2000,
Abstract: A theoretical model is used to explain the dynamical behavior of dust particles (grains) near the Sun. The equation of motion includes gravitation, electromagnetic forces and radiation pressure as well as drags. All dust particles which are near the Sun lose mass by sublimation, and both radiation pressure and sublimation control the dust grain life time and modify the orbital parameters. In the model, a physical consideration is made for the solar magnetic field: it is assumed that the field has only a radial component. The set of equations which describes all forces is presented in detail. Some physical aspects of the dynamical behavior of the dust are discussed.
