This paper reflects on the similarities and differences between human beings and animals as members of systems in permanent interaction. The main goal is to define Homo, reviewing his/her biological and cultural evolution and reflecting on the animal social behaviors that still remain in Homo sapiens-sapiens.
The present literature review analyzes the current state of artificial control of sexual maturity in fish culture using hormone therapy, evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of different technological strategies available. The discussion covers from the first successful attempt conducted by Houssay (1930), Argentina, up to the most recent and more effective techniques of slow release and the use of dopamine inhibitors. In addition, the evaluation of the use of non traumatic methodologies that up until now have not been entirely effective is covered.

Abstract: the current trend in world aquaculture is towards the diversification of cultures, mainly native species. the red cusk eel genypterus chilensis is a native chilean species of high gastronomic demand and seasonal exploitation that is projected as a candidate for the development of farming technology. the objective of this study was to test the efficiency of two incubation systems for g. chilensis egg masses, one with a closed water circuit (sicc) and the other with an open water circuit (sica). efficiency was measured by the percentage of eggs hatched. two assays were performed, measuring and comparing the percentages of egg fecundation and hatching in four replicates between the two incubation systems. significant differences were only found between the percentages of fecundation of bioassay 2. on average, in bioassay 1, egg fecundation reached 81%, and the average of hatching for the sicc was 42.9 ± 34.5% and for the sica was 0.0 ± 0.0%. bioassay 2 had an average fecundation of 87.3 ± 2.6% for the sicc and 79.8 ± 3.2% for the sica, and the average for hatching was 27.9 ± 33.7% for the sicc and 4.8 ± 5.6% for the sica. incubation parameters for maximum hatching were discussed and a proposal was made for improving the sicc system. the incubation system with a closed water circuit generated greater survival of g. chilensis eggs.
Nitrihual Valdebenito,Luis Alejandro;
Folios , 2011,
Abstract: the following work investigates two passions -doubt and hopelessness- in the tale el muerto, which belongs to the book el aleph by jorge luis borges. our theoretical framework is paolo fabbri's and aljirdes greimas' works about passion and narrativity theory. in order to do this, we have used greimas' methodology on actantial model, which is a fundamental component to determine how a passion is declared in the textual level.
Nitrihual Valdebenito,Luis Alejandro;
Letras , 2009,
Abstract: this article reviews the book of ignacio domeyko araucanía y sus habitants? (araucania and its inhabitants?) from a critical perspective. we state that the polish author, though of a humanistic-christian orientation, has a classic ethnocentric vision, with the idea of the good savage and with a justification for killing mapuche aborigines, settled in the south of chile. all of this aiming at achieving the civilizatory process longed-for by the chilean state.
Valdebenito,Nemesio I;
Información tecnológica , 2007, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-07642007000200009
Abstract: the present investigation evaluated the effect in the motility and spermatic rainbow trout (oncorhynchus mykiss) fertility of a saline solution 0.98% nacl enriched with 2.5; 5.0; 10.0 and 20.0mm of caffeine, using as control saline solution without caffeine. the use of caffeine at a concentration of 10mm in the activator solution duplicated the time of spermatic motility (160.0 ± 18,8s) in contrast with the control (80,0 ± 12,5s). increased fertility was observed when caffeine was used in the activator, although the values were not statistically different in relation with the control (81.6 ± 5.7%). these results demonstrate the capacity of caffeine to enhance spermatic motility in rainbow trout. further research must be conducted to elucidate the minimum concentrations of caffeine required in intensive production systems.
Biotechnology applied to salmoniculture
Isler, Iván Valdebenito;
Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982009001300004
Abstract: this work presents a conceptual analysis of the main biotechnologies used in chilean salmoniculture, which is based on the production of atlantic salmon (salmo salar, 356.407 t),silver salmon or coho (oncorhynchus kisutch, 116.481 t), (o. tshawytscha, 2.062 t) and rainbow trout (o. mykiss, 189.178 t).these activities are focused on the photoperiod artificial manipulation to obtain out-of-season spawning, in the use of hormonal therapies which allow synchronizing the final oocyte maturation (fom) and sexual maturity acceleration or the increase in milt volume produced by males. such actions are carried out using gnrha in doses close to 10 μg/kg of fish. once sexual maturity is reached, in vitro manipulation of gamets must often be done due to either the prolonged storage (particularly milt) they have to undergo in order to transport them where fertilization takes place, or awaiting for the ichtiopathological results, usually taken to broodstock. the production of "all female" populations is also common. frequently, these populations in rainbow trout are triploided (through shock temperature close to 28o c or pressure close to 8.000 psi) to obtain sterile species which improve productive perfomance of cultured populations without sexual maturity signs. besides, the perspectives of industrial use of transgenic organisms in the culture of salmonids are analyzed.
