Uma abordagem crítica do conceito de "etnicidade" na obra de Fredrik Barth
Villar, Diego;
Mana , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-93132004000100006
Abstract: this article discusses fredrik barths approach to the problem of ethnicity based on a wide-ranging analysis of his work. analysis focuses on various key ideas recurrent in the authors programmatic and theoretical-methodological writings, as well as his ethnographic studies. a critical evaluation is made of the explicatory power of ecological and demographic factors in his model, the importance of his thesis of relative identity, the genealogy of theoretical influences found in barthian explanations and the problem of the rational actor as the binding element in his interactionist conception of social relations.

Villar Diego
Mana , 2004,
--- Of Arawak origin, the ethnic group identified as the Chané indigenous group in the Amerindian literature, settled on the eastern slopes of the Andes before the Conquest of the Occidental region or Paraguayan Chaco took place. There, this group engaged in complex inter-ethnic relationships with other Guarani-speaking ethnic groups, Chaco natives, and thereafter, as the colonization process consolidated, with several Creole social agents: landowners, foremen of sugar plantations, the military, and missionaries. Supported by ethnographic and ethno-historical documents, the author suggests that the open, flexible, malleable and integrating organization of Chané shamanism was marked by these multiple historical interactions, thereby becoming an ideal symbolic language to reflect the problems arising from situations of intercultural contact.
Generalizing complexity: a fruitful partnership of functional genomics and systems biology
Diego Villar, Duncan T Odom
Genome Medicine , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/gm310
Abstract: Despite of the astounding complexity of biological systems, the history of biology is marked by attempts to discern generalizable principles. Functional genomics and its ultimate integration with systems biology remain pivotal to enabling advances in experimental technology that provide detailed and comprehensive information about networks of biological interactions. The Functional Genomics and Systems Biology 2011 conference focused on recent, largely unpublished developments in sequencing-based approaches and computational methods, including their application to chromatin and proteome systems biology. Experts at the meeting also discussed advances in translating these findings to the clinic, with the ultimate goal of promoting personalized medicine. Here, we summarize some of the highlights presented at this exciting conference.A relatively simple genome and the availability of powerful methods for their genetic manipulation make yeast models the central paradigm in systems biology. Brenda Andrews (University of Toronto, Canada) presented the latest applications of synthetic genetic array (SGA) technology to proteome localization, allowing quantitative determination of subcellular localizations for the majority of yeast proteins. Published work from the laboratories of Andrews and Charles Boone (University of Toronto, Canada) exploited the SGA method to produce a genome-scale landscape of genetic interactions in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Integration of this technology with high-content microscopy screening of a green fluorescent protein fusion library allowed construction of abundance localization networks across the yeast proteome, including flux networks of dynamic protein localization changes. Frank Holstege (University Medical Center Utrecht, The Netherlands) emphasized the importance of specificity and redundancy in understanding regulatory processes. Work in his laboratory employed gene expression changes in S. cerevisiae upon single or double deletion of 16
Os mesti?os mais puros: Representa??es chiriguano e chané da mesti?agem
Combès, Isabelle;Villar, Diego;
Mana , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-93132007000100002
Abstract: the starting point of this article is the thesis developed in 1991 by isabelle combès and thierry saignes on the birth of chiriguano ethnicity and identity, both mixed ?in essence.? the chiriguano and the chané appear to maintain a somewhat paradoxical relationship with miscegenation, however. although considered paradigmatic examples of amerindian miscegenation, some contemporary views anticipate the dissolution of the ethnic group precisely because of its mixture with whites. at the same time, the chiriguano themselves reject any idea of mixture, proclaiming themselves to be simply ?guarani.? based on a double case study of the bolivian isoso and the argentinean northwest, the article casts doubt on the idea of the complete absorption of the chané by the chiriguano complex; it then analyzes the different types of miscegenation in existence and their relation to an asymmetrical schema that creates a scale of values between different ethnic groups. finally, the authors suggest that the ideological ambivalence surrounding miscegenation is precisely due to the fact that it is a hybrid construct, the product of the fusion between chané and guarani ideologies.

Revista Argentina de Neurocirugía , 2006,
Abstract: Objetivo. Objective: To describe the results obtained with intraoperative cortical mapping in the surgical treatment of rolandic tumors. Method: We studied 27 patients (may 2000-may 2005) between 27 and 78 years old (16 males-11 females) with intracranial tumors located in the rolandic area. In all cases we used techniques of functional localization and, intraoperative somatosensorial evoked potentials and bipolar cortical stimulation. Results: In 24 cases removal was total and in 3 cases was subtotal. Of the 23 cases with preoperative motor symptoms, postoperatively 17 were improved, 5 remained stable and 1 deteriorated transiently. No patient without preoperative deficits was worst. We did not have complications related to the localization procedure. Conclusion: Intraoperative cortical mapping is a safe and sound technique for the preservation of the eloquent cortex during surgery of rolandic tumors.
Who Meets the Standrads: A Multidimensional Approach  [PDF]
Antonio Villar
Modern Economy (ME) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/me.2011.24069
Abstract: We consider here the evaluation of the performance of a society with respect to a given set of targets. We provide a characterization of an intuitive evaluation formula that consists of the mean of the shares of the achievements in the targets. The criterion so obtained permits one not only to endogenously determine who meets the standards and who does not, but also to quantify the degree of fulfilment. Two empirical illustrations are provided: the compliance of the European Union Stability and Growth Pact, on the one hand, and the evaluation of research excellence in the Spanish universities, on the other hand.
The Educational Development Index: A Multidimensional Approach to Educational Achievements through PISA  [PDF]
Antonio Villar
Modern Economy (ME) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/me.2013.45042
Abstract:

This paper proposes a multidimensional index that summarizes three relevant aspects of the educational achievements, out of the data provided by the PISA Report, concerning reading abilities of 15-year-old students from 65 countries. The three aspects considered are: performance, equity, and quality. The Educational Development Index (EDI) is the geometric mean of the normalized values of those three variables. We analyse the distribution of the variables that approach those three aspects and the resulting index, relative to the corresponding means of the OECD countries.
