Abstract: Exploratory studies developed at several neurosciences laboratories at universities around the world show us through the experience that there is a biological process called neuroplasticity. Because of this oldest concept about the neuronal formation, scientists also thought that if a particular area of the adult brain was damaged, the nerve cells could not form new connections and the functions controlled by this field of the brain would be permanently lost or could not be regenerate. However, studies have overturned this old view, and currently, scientists recognize that the brain continues to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections during the life. This phenomenon is called neuroplasticity that refers to the potential which the brain should be reorganized by creating new neural pathways to adapt, as it needs.

Abstract: Como definir a identidade brasileira?

Abstract:

In 1999, the Judaic Education Council of Rio de Janeiro implemented the Educational Innovation Program (EIP) in the Israeli schools of that city so as to meet the new trends in Brazilian education. The present work was designed to evaluate the modifications taking place in the school environment as a result of EIP implementation, a program whose core idea is to work on knowledge building from the Piagetian perspective, active learning in Dewey’s conception, and multiple intelligences as presented by Gardner. In order to assess the chosen program, we used a qualitative approach through semi-structured interviews with the participants and observation of classrooms from the first to the fifth grade of elementary school. The results of our study showed that from the implementation of the program, the professionals involved were more motivated to search for information and update their knowledge so as to meet the differences between students, using a diversity of strategies and dynamic activities which led to encouraging student autonomy as regards their learning. The reported difficulties for the work to proceed were mainly about the schoolwork timetable planned for both the project and the subjects, and teachers having to cover an extensive curriculum, common to other Brazilian schools. In every innovative program, it is important for the professionals involved in it to continually re-evaluate its development, searching for changes or alternatives as difficulties are encountered. The aim of the present paper is to report the main findings of this research, as well as indicate the strengths and precautions to take in educational innovation proposals whose primary focus is classroom innovation.

Abstract: introduction: patients with congenital heart disease who underwent pulmonary valvotomy or surgery to open the pulmonary valve ring are prone to develop residual pulmonary insufficiency or stenosis that may lead to right heart failure with clinical deterioration. these children require multiple interventions throughout their lives, which impose a high rate of morbidity and mortality. objective: to develop a less invasive technique for implantation of a valved prosthesis through the right ventricle. methods: the valved prosthesis consists of an auto expanding metal stent built with nitinol, surrounded with polyester, where the three leaflets of bovine pericardium were mounted. twelve pigs were used to perform the implants. echocardiographic control was performed immediately after implantation and one, four, eight and 12 weeks. results: one animal showed reflux of moderate to severe and three mild reflux. transvalvular gradients measured before implantation ranged from 3 to 6 mmhg and that soon after the implant was increased, ranging from 7 to 45 mmhg. there was a decrease in these gradients during follow up and in only four of the twelve animals the gradients were above 20 mmhg. thrombus formation occurred in the prosthesis of six animals, and this was the most frequent complication. conclusion: these findings highlight the need for studies with the use of anticoagulants and antiplatelet, an attempt to reduce this event. the study aims to contribute for the start of the use of prosthetic heart valves that could be implanted through minimally invasive techniques without the use of cardiopulmonary bypass

Abstract: objective: the aortic valve replacement is a routine procedure with acceptable risk, but in some cases, such a risk can justify contraindication. the minimally invasive transcatheter aortic valve implantation has been viable, with lower morbidity and mortality. the aim of this study was to develop a national catheter-mounted aortic bioprosthesis for the aortic position implant. methods: after animal studies, 14 patients with high euroscore underwent transcatheter aortic valve implantation. median logistic euroscore was 43.7%. four patients presented with dysfunctional bioprosthesis, remaining ones presented calcified aortic stenosis. all patients presented symptoms. procedures were performed in a hybrid or under fluoroscopic and echocardiography guidance. using a left minithoracotomy the prosthesis was implanted through the ventricular apex under ventricular pacing or hemorrhagic shock, after aortic valvoplasty. echocardiograph and angiograph controls were performed, and the patients were referred to icu. results: implant was feasible in 13 cases. there were no intra-operative deaths. median peak transvalvular aortic gradient reduced to 25.0 mmhg, and left ventricular function improved in the first seven post-operative days. paravalvular aortic regurgitation was mild and present in 71%. no definitive pacemaker was needed. there was no peripheral vascular complication. overall mortality was 42%. conclusion: the transapical implantation of cathetermounted bioprosthesis was a feasible procedure. long term follow-up is mandatory in order to access efficacy and indications.

Abstract: this study evaluated a concept-program developed in the area of a family health unity, which monitored, for two years, the returns of infant children to regular attendance by the dentist, through their vaccines cards. a cross-sectional study was conducted, involving a convenience sample of 123 children aged 12 to 36 months, residents in the area. data were collected during a campaign of immunization, in 2007, through a questionnaire answered by parents, vaccines cards checking, and clinical examination of children. the results showed that 81% of the examined children were registered in the fhu for dental care; from them, 95% had entered before reaching one year of life, having vaccines cards registration. it was also found that 50% of the children had visited the dentist more than once per year of life and 58% of them returned for dental appointments in the year before the survey. the prevalence of dental caries was lower in this group of children (17%), than in the group without frequent returns, or the one not registered in the fhu (26%). it was concluded that the vaccines card can be a useful tool for tracking the frequency of babies to dentist.

Abstract: this article discusses the educational data compiled in the 3rd edition of the gender and race inequalities portrait, emphasizing the importance of understanding how the different situations and social processes experienced by white and black students affect their permanence, progression and performance in school. as main findings, we highlight: the decrease of the historical educational gap between whites and blacks aged over 15, the stagnation of the educational gap between white and black children from 7 to 14 years of age, as well as the slower rate of growth to access university by black women in comparison to that of black men. finally, we argue in favor of integrating different kinds of policies to overcome the remaining racial inequalities in education
