Revista chilena de infectología , 2012, DOI: 10.4067/S0716-10182012000200002
Abstract: background: foodborne diseases have increased considerably. aim: to report a foodborne outbreak, remarking the importance of early notification to activate the epidemiological surveillance system. results: during february 2011 we observed a salmonella enteritidis outbreak. 31.6% of the cases were seen in the same emergency care unit where all required intravenous fluid rehydration, and 41.7% were hospitalized because of severe dehydration. in the emergency room 45.5% of cases required a second visit to be diagnosed correctly. discussion: physicians under report the cases of this disease, delaying the activation of the epidemiological surveillance system. conclusions: besides providing good treatment to patients, physicians need to be qualified to recognize foodborne diseases and communicate early the suspicion of an outbreak to the epidemiological surveillance system in order to prevent new cases of disease in the community.

Abstract: Background: During the last few years, multiple new medical schools have emerged in Chile, associated to the constant preoccupation to provide a good quality medical care. This created the need to evaluate medical training programs and to open a discussion about the attributes that a good physician should have. Aim: To evaluate the medical student's perception of the ideal medical doctor profile. Material and methods: An analytical, descriptive and cross sectional study was designed. Eleven second year, 11 third year, nine fourth year, 13 fifth year, 6 sixth year and 8 seventh year students were studied. Data collection was gathered by focus groups. Codes and triangulation were used for data analysis. Results: As attitudes and moral-ethical values, students valued the absence of discrimination a listening attitude and empathy. Among job related issues, they valued responsibility and punctuality. Emotional and legal self-care were valued as self related attitudes. Among skills, competences and capacities, a value was given to communicational skills, team work and professional easiness. Knowledge about medical and non medical topics was appraised. The valued attributes among duties and activities were patient diagnosis, treatment and education, team leadership and continuous medical training. Conclusions: These findings should help to design new curricula for medical schools (Rev Méd Chile 2006; 134: 947-54)
CONCEPTO DE DERECHO A LA VIDA
Figueroa García-Huidobro,Rodolfo;
Ius et Praxis , 2008, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-00122008000100010
Abstract: both in national and foreign literature it is possible to find five conceptions regarding the right to life: as the right to live or remain alive; as the right to live well or with dignity; as the right to be given all that is necessary to stay alive; as the right no to be killed and, finally, as the right no to be killed arbitrarily. in this paper all those conceptions are explained, analyzed y reasons are given to support the last one of them, that according to which the right to life is the right not to be killed arbitrarily. besides that, this paper addresses the discussion regarding the legitimacy for an individual to take his life.
LA JUSTICIA NATURAL Y EL MEJOR RéGIMEN EN ARISTóTELES
GARCíA-HUIDOBRO,JOAQUíN;
Ideas y Valores , 2012,
Abstract: aristotle states that although political regimes vary from place to place, only one is by nature the best regime possible anywhere. the article analyzes some of the problems deriving from this statement, in order to show that the diversity of political forms is not abolished in that best regime and that conventional justice does not end up being superfluous. furthermore, the aristotelian idea of the best regime is radically different from later utopianism. finally, the article examines the relation between the naturally just, as it is set forth in the nicomachean ethics, and the issue of the best regime, as dealt with in the politics.
JUSTIFICACIóN DEL ROL DE LAS CORTES HACIENDO JUSTICIABLES LOS DERECHOS ECONóMICOS, SOCIALES Y CULTURALES, EN PARTICULAR, EL DERECHO A LA PROTECCIóN DE LA SALUD
Figueroa García-Huidobro,Rodolfo;
Revista chilena de derecho , 2009, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-34372009000200005
Abstract: there are basically two objections against courts making economic, social and cultural rights justiciable. according to the objection of incapacity, judges are not institutionally equipped to recognize complex and polycentric issues embedded in economic and social rights. therefore, they would be incapable of making those rights justiciable. according to the objection of illegitimacy, economic and social rights are realized through public policies fostered throughout the executive branch. consequently, judiciary control over economic, social and cultural rights would lead to breaking the separation of powers. that is illegitimate. both objections have been analyzed and discussed in the anglo-american literature and the conclusion is that none of them represent an insurmountable obstacle to regard economic, social and cultural rights recognizable and judged by courts. otherwise, there are powerful reasons for promoting this labour.
CONCEPTO DE PERSONA, TITULARIDAD DEL DERECHO A LA VIDA Y ABORTO
Figueroa García-Huidobro,Rodolfo;
Revista de derecho (Valdivia) , 2007, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-09502007000200005
Abstract: for the majority or our legal community, the legal concept of natural person is equivalent to that of human being from the moment of conception and, therefore, from that moment a person is entitled to the right to life. however, there is no constitutional basis for sustaining that opinion. foreign and international have never affirmed that a human being is a legally person from the moment of conception. that does not mean that a human being is unprotected before being born. the law must provide that protection, but doing so does not mean entitling a human being to the right to life. only in the german case the nasciturus is entitled to such a right, although at the same time abortion is permitted. in the end, protecting the life of the unborn and allowing abortion are compatible positions, as demonstrated by all the constitutional case law that has been passed on this matter
