La salud pública como ciencia social: reflexiones en torno a las posibilidades de una salud pública comprensiva

Abstract: close historic relationships between medicine and public health have implied, as a consequence for the latter, the inheritance of epistemological traits traditionally characteristic of a positivistic conception of science on which a major part of the theoretical development of modern medicine has been supported. from the point of view of this ontological, epistemological and methodological reference of positivism, health has been reduced to deterministic, linear and causalistic explanations that systematically cancel any reference to the lifeworld (lebenswelt), both for the researcher and for the "objects" of research. the scientific pretensions of public health have become protruding over its political and ethical commitment, even widening the gap between scientific knowledge and the specific conditions of existence of social actors and their relation to health. this paper presents some reflections around the conditions of possibility for a comprehensive approach of public health problems. these reflections are based on a conception of health as a social phenomenon, that is to say, as an emergent element from the complex web of intersubjective relationships among social actors, in a specific social and historic horizon. epistemological, ethical and political implications of this perspective for research in public health are also discussed.
Conceptions about mental health in the field of public health

Abstract: In the field of public health, mental health has had a great deal of relevance. This concept has been used extensively in the professional, academic, and political fields. Despite that, the different definitions of mental health face significant epistemological and practical problems. These difficulties are encountered by those who try to specify the meaning of "mental", the relationship between "health" and "mental", and, consequently, how research and intervention actions are to be carried out in the field of mental health. In practice, the orientation of actions and research involving mental health is not based on “universal” definitions in the field of public health. It is rather based on conceptions constructed from different approaches to the health-disease issue. This paper discusses the conceptions of mental health that have been configured from the biomedical, behavioral, and socio-economic approaches, the notions of "mind" underlying these conceptions, and their implications for intervention in the field of public health.

Abstract: the effects of two types of hydroxylapatite on bone synthesis and properties were evaluated. an osteoconductive resorbable hydroxyapatite (oseou), synthesized at two different temperatures of calcination (type a and type b) was compared with a commercial mixture of hydroxyapatite (osteogen?), commonly used in several surgical procedures involving bone loss. the synthesis was performed in the laboratories of the university of antioquia by precipitating a mixture of calcium nitrate and ammonium phosphate. the products obtained and the commercial hydroxyapatite were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (sem), x- ray diffraction (xrd), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ftir), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (eds). osteoconductive and osseointegration characteristics were measured according to the products ability to induce local cell differentiation into bone forming cells. these characteristics were evaluated in hydroxyapatite implants performed in 70 new zealand breed rabbits distributed into seven groups of 10 animals each, tested at 7, 14, 21, 28, 42, 60 and 90 days after the surgical procedure.

Abstract: in the following article the effects of two types of hydroxiapatites on bone synthesis and properties were evaluated. one of them (oseou) was synthesized at two different temperatures to compare it to a commercial mixture of hydroxiapatite (osteogen?) commonly used in several surgical procedures in which loss of bone tissue is present. the synthesis was carried out in the laboratories of the universidad de antioquia by precipitating the mixture of calcium nitrate and ammonium phosphate. the final products and the commercial hydroxiapatite were characterized by sweeper electronic microscopy (sem), x ray diffraction (xrd), fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (ftir), and energy dispersed spectrometry (eds). the properties of osteoconduction and osteointegration were measured according to the capacity of the products to induce the differentiation of local cells into bone forming cells. such characteristics were evaluated in hydroxiapatite implants in 70 new zealand breed rabbits distributed in seven groups, ten rabbits in each group, which were evaluated at days 7, 14, 21, 28, 42, 60 and 90 after the surgical procedure. the results demonstrated that the hydroxiapatites synthesized in the laboratories of the universidad de antioquia and the commercial hydroxiapatite showed similar characteristics in terms of the crystal structure, chemical composition and absorption properties with slight morphological differences in particle shape and size. using variance analysis, no meaningful statistical differences were found between the histopathological variables evaluated in the several hydroxiapatite groups (p>0.05), indicating that results obtained with both the oseou and the commercial hydroxiapatite equally affected bone synthesis and properties.

Abstract: the multiple correspondence factorial analyses is an extension of simple correspondence analysis for two set of characteristics. it permits the study of interdependence relationship between categorical or qualitative variables, that is, not metric. this model goes beyond the analysis of existing relationship between variables, because it allows knowing how this relationship is structured. this analysis has had a wide diffusion in different fields of research mainly in life sciences. the aim of this study was to apply this model to a previously reported study focused on the analysis of pig aortic valves entitled “estudio anatomopatológico de válvulas aórticas porcinas a seleccionar para la elaboración de bioprótesis cardiacas”. by this model, it was possible to establish interrelationships between findings of macroscopic and microscopic lesions for two groups of aortic valves studied, with or without valve lesions. of key relevance were the relationship found between endocardiosis-like degenerative lesions and vascular alterations like hemorrhage and congestion.

Abstract: El plasma obtenido de la sangre de algunos animales como el bovino, es aprovechado en diversos países en la alimentación humana, incorporado en los alimentos como fuente de proteína de bajo costo. El siguiente trabajo presenta el resultado de la investigación de la elaboración de un embutido tipo salchichón de pollo, con contenido de plasma sanguíneo de bovino. Fueron realizados cinco ensayos; plasma bovino hidratado (PBH) reemplazando el 10 y 20% de la proteína de pollo; plasma bovino comercial (PBC) reemplazando el 10 y 20% de la proteína y el control. Fue realizado análisis bromatológico, rendimiento, textura, sensorial y microbiológico. El análisis bromatológico muestra diferencias significativas entre tratamientos (p<0.05), presentando mejor comportamiento el salchichón elaborado con PBH 10%. Las menores perdidas fueron determinadas para el salchichón elaborado con PBH 20%. El análisis instrumental y sensorial muestra que el mejor comportamiento y atributos sensoriales fue para el salchichón elaborado con PBH 10%. Los resultados del análisis microbiológico muestran que los niveles de los microorganismos determinados están dentro de las normas para productos cárnicos cocidos. O plasma obtido da sangue de alguns animais, como vacas, é usado em vários países, para consumo humano, adicionado nos alimentos como fonte de proteína de baixo custo. Este trabalho apresenta os resultados da investiga o do desenvolvimento de um tipo de salame de frango, contendo plasma sanguíneo bovino. Cinco ensaios foram realizados; plasma bovino hidratado (PBH), substituindo 10 e 20% de proteína de frango; plasma bovino comercial (PBC), substituindo 10 e 20% da proteína e o controle. Foi realizada análise bromatológica, rendimento, textura, sensorial e microbiológica. A análise bromatológica mostra diferen as significativas entre os tratamentos (p<0.05), apresentando melhor desempenho o salame elaborado com PBH 10%. As menores perdas foram determinadas para o salame elaborado com PBH 20%. A análise instrumental e sensorial demonstra que o melhor comportamento e atributos sensoriais do salame foi feita com 10% PBH. Os resultados das análises microbiológicas mostram que os níveis dos microorganismos est o dentro das normas para produtos cárneos cozinhados. Abstract: purpose: to describe the mental health status of victims of an armed combat in the state of chocó (colombia). method: a description of the mental disorders associated with a traumatic experience lived on may 2nd 2002 (bojayá township- colombia), as a conse- quence of an armed confrontation, resulting in 119 persons dead and 98 injured. analytic level methodology, with case control design, was used. a non random sample of 40 civilian adults, mean age 35 years, was studied. of these, 19 persons returned to their place of origin and 21 persons remained in quibdó (state capital) were evaluated. the case group consisted of a total of 15 persons with post- traumatic stress disorder (ptsd) and the control group included 25 persons without ptsd diagnosis. the instrument used for evaluation was the structured interview pro- tocol m.i.n.i applied one year after the tragic event. results: disorders that showed greater association with ptsd were: social phobia (p=0.001, or 26.29), actual panic disorder (p=0.008, or 15.33), occasional panic disor- der (p=0.019, or 8.25), and agoraphobia without panic history (p=0.024, or=11.50). the prevalence of was high for the following disorders, without significant differences between groups: major depression (md) (37% cases and 38% controls), suicide risk (37% y 62% respectively), generalised anxiety disorder (gad) (47% and 38% respectively). conclusions: victims of armed violence who suffer ptsd are at high risk of presenting other anxiety disorders such as social pho- bias, gad, and panic attacks.
Producción y propiedades funcionales de plasma bovino hidratado en embutido tipo salchichón

Abstract: the plasma obtained from blood of some animals such as bovines, is used in various countries in human nourishment, incorporated in foods as a protein source of low cost. this paper presents the results of research into the development of a type sausage stuffed chicken, containing bovine blood plasma. five trials were conducted; hydrated bovine plasma (hbp) by replacing the 10 and 20% of chicken protein, beef commercial plasma (bcp) by replacing the 10 and 20% of protein and control. bromatological, yield, texture, sensory and microbiological analysis were made. bromatological analysis shows significant differences between treatments (p<0.05), showing the best performance the sausage made with 10% hbp. the lowest losses were determined for the sausage prepared with 20% hbp. the instrumental and sensory analysis showed that the best behavior and sensory attributes were for the sausage made with 10% hbp. the results of microbiological analysis showed that levels of certain microorganisms are within the standards for cooked meat products.
