Uch?a, Elizabeth;Firmo, Josélia O. A.;Dias, Elizabeth C.;Pereira, Maria Stella N.;Gontijo, Eliane D.;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2002000100008
Abstract: an anthropological approach was employed to investigate the universe of representations (ways of thinking) and behaviors (ways of acting) associated with chagas disease in a group of public service workers in belo horizonte (both infected and not infected with trypanosoma cruzi). an attempt was also made to evaluate the repercussions of this universe of representations and behaviors on the lives of the infected individuals. the collection and analysis of the data followed the "systems of signs, meanings, and actions" model developed by corin et al. (1989, 1992). sixteen seropositive and 12 seronegative workers were interviewed to compare their ways of thinking and acting towards the disease. data analysis allowed identification of diverse elements within a context that maximized the limitations imposed by chagas disease. these should be taken into account in the planning of educational campaigns and elaboration of health care models for chagas patients.

ZALTMAN, Cyrla;SOUZA, Heitor Siffert Pereira de;CASTRO, Maria Elizabeth C.;SOBRAL, Maria de Fátima S.;DIAS, Paula Cristina P.;LEMOS Jr., Vilson;
Arquivos de Gastroenterologia , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-28032002000200002
Abstract: background - upper gastrointestinal bleeding is a frequent and potentially severe complication of most digestive diseases of the upper gastrointestinal tract. upper endoscopy has a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of upper gastrointestinal bleeding, however epidemiological studies are still limited in our country. aims - to assess the clinical characteristics, endoscopic accuracy, treatment efficiency and clinical outcome of patients admitted to the endoscopic unit with upper gastrointestinal bleeding. methods - a retrospective study of consecutive records from patients who underwent emergency endoscopy for upper gastrointestinal bleeding was performed during a period of 2 years. results - most patients were male 68.7%, with a mean age of 54.5 ± 17.5 years. a bleeding site could be detected in 75.6% of the patients. diagnostic accuracy was greater within the first 24 hours of the bleeding onset, and in the presence of hematemesis. peptic ulcer was the main cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding (35%). the prevalence of variceal bleeding (20.45%) indicates a high rate of underlying liver disease. endoscopic treatment was performed in 23.86% of the patients. permanent hemostasis was achieved in 86% of the patients at the first endoscopic intervention, and in 62.5% of the patients after rebleeding. emergency surgery was seldom necessary. the average number of blood units was 1.44 ± 1.99 per patient. the average length of hospital stay was 7.71 ± 12.2 days. rebleeding was reported in 9.1% of the patients. the overall mortality rate of 15.34% was significantly correlated with previous liver disease. conclusions - diagnostic accuracy was related to the time interval between the bleeding episode and endoscopy, and to clinical presentation. endoscopic therapy was an effective tool for selected patients. the resulting increased duration of hospitalization and higher mortality rate in the patients submitted to therapeutic endoscopy were attributed to a higher pre

Abstract: quimica nova and the journal of the brazilian chemical society are two examples of successful initiatives taken by the brazilian chemical society (sbq - sociedade brasileira de química), and may serve as models for the scientific societies of developing countries. pillars of the sbq, these two periodicals are undeniable demonstrations that idealism, utopia and dignity are the essential ingredients for transforming dreams into reality. few believed that the brazilian chemical community would one day have, as it does today, two scientific research periodicals indexed in the principal international data banks.

Brant, Luiz Carlos;Dias, Elizabeth Costa;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2004000400008
Abstract: a cross-sectional study conducted in a state-owned company undergoing a restructuring process in greater metropolitan belo horizonte, brazil, aimed to identify manifestations of distress among managers. the study used the self-report questionnaire-20 (srq-20), a socioeconomic questionnaire, document analysis, and a focus group. the principal manifestations of distress were: anxiety (73.2%); sadness (43.7%); and dissatisfaction (39.0%). of the nine study variables, only gender was statistically associated with distress (p < 0.05). females showed significantly greater distress than males (or = 6.0; 95% ci). the focus group was an important instrument for identifying distress, while the questionnaires helped identify defensive strategies, despite the conceptual differences that were observed. the conclusion was that the utilization of distinct methodological approaches in studies on distress can lead to findings that help produce and develop the field of workers' health.

Brant Luiz Carlos,Dias Elizabeth Costa
Violence or Emancipation?  [PDF]
Cándida Elizabeth Vivero Marín
Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2017.59002
Abstract: In the Mexican narrative written by young women, symbolic violence is present through an implied feminist emancipatory project. In the novels Se?orita Vodka by Susana Iglesias, and Por el lado salvaje by Nadia Villafuerte, the hypersexualization of the female body restates prostitution as an inseparable activity of being-woman. So, the violence suffered by female characters is naturalized and they themselves accept subordination and subjugation. Both texts end up reinforcing the notion of the female body just for the enjoyment and service for the others, canceling a real possibility of release.
