Abstract: this paper reports on a study conducted at universidad nacional de colombia in the alex virtual english program. it shows the main characteristics of discussion boards when used as a main activity in an efl blended course. the study took place in the second semester of 2008 when the program was in the piloting stage and it illustrates the importance of the discussion board tool in the transition from face-to-face education to virtual education. the research followed the qualitative principles and shows the use given to discussion boards by some of the students of the program. students' perceptions of the tool are registered as a description to give the reader the opportunity to develop her/his own perception on its use.

Este artículo rese a un estudio realizado en la Universidad Nacional de Colombia en el programa ALEX Virtual - inglés. Se muestran algunas características de los foros de discusión como actividad principal en un curso mixto (presencial y virtual) de inglés como lengua extranjera. El estudio se realizó en el segundo semestre del 2008, cuando el programa aún estaba en fase de pilotaje y ejemplifica la importancia de los foros de discusión en la transición de la modalidad presencial a virtual. La investigación siguió los principios cualitativos y muestra el uso que dan algunos estudiantes del programa a los foros de discusión. Se describen las percepciones de los estudiantes sobre la herramienta para que el lector pueda desarrollar su propio punto de vista sobre el uso de esta.

Abstract: The Bank Credit Channel, which amplifies the effects of the traditionalchannel of monetary policy, emphasizes on the structure and frictions of financial marketsas determinants of aggregate spending. This paper aims at analyze and verify the existenceof the bank credit channel in Colombia estimating a model proposed by Gibson (1997)which uses threshold regressions as a way to determine the impact of monetary policyon aggregate demand. Results do not allow dismissing the existence of this transmissionmechanism in Colombia during the analyzed period, although it seems to operate onlythrough contractionary monetary policy.
Synergy of combined Doxycycline/TUDCA treatment in lowering Transthyretin deposition and associated biomarkers: studies in FAP mouse models

Abstract: In the present work we evaluated different doxycycline administration schemes, including different periods of treatment, different dosages and different FAP TTR V30M animal models. Evaluation included CR staining, immunohistochemistry for TTR, metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and serum amyloid P component (SAP). We determined that a minimum period of 15 days of treatment with a 8 mg/Kg/day dosage resulted in fibril removal. The possibility of intermittent treatments was also assessed and a maximum period of 15 days of suspension was determined to maintain tissues amyloid-free. Combined cycled doxycycline and TUDCA administration to mice with amyloid deposition, using two different concentrations of both drugs, was more effective than either individual doxycycline or TUDCA, in significantly lowering TTR deposition and associated tissue markers. The observed synergistic effect of doxycycline/TUDCA in the range of human tolerable quantities, in the transgenic TTR mice models prompts their application in FAP, particularly in the early stages of disease.Familial Amyloid Polyneuropathy (FAP) is characterized by the deposition of Transthyretin (TTR) amyloid fibrils in several organs, with special involvement of the peripheral nerve. Therapy is presently based on liver transplantation in selected patients, although progression of amyloid cardiomyopathy after liver transplantation is a serious and unsolved concern. FAP is characterized by early impairment of temperature and pain sensation in the feet, autonomic dysfunction leading to malabsorption and emaciation. Amyloid deposits can occur in any part of the peripheral nervous system, including nerve trunks, plexus and sensory and autonomic ganglia. TTR V30M is the most common TTR mutation associated with FAP but over 100 mutations are identified and associated with disease [1].Animal models for a variety of disorders have been widely used to investigate mechanisms leading to disease and to assess possible therapeutic strategies.

Abstract: during augusto pinochet's dictatorship the parque por la paz ex-villa grimaldi was the setting of abhorrent violations to human rights; it is today an emblematic site of memory in chile. pursuing the goal of a "pedagogy of memory" an ethnographically oriented research stirred the historical memory of high school students. by means of some guided visits of students to the parque por la paz, of a previous and subsequent action in the classroom, and of a somewhat spontaneous work of memory inside the students' families -collected in interviews to some of the students involved in the experience- the results achieved by the research proved the importance of the sites of commemoration in the teaching of national history and in the ethical formation in human rights. they also accounted for the existence of a fragmented historical memory in chile and for the persistence of frames of memory associated to conflicting interpretations on the traumatic recent chilean past.
Iodophanus carneus and I. testaceus (Ascomycota-Pezizales): Independent taxonomic identity or synonymy? A study of their morphology and isozymes

Abstract: the aim of this study was to delimit two iodophanus species: i. carneus and i. testaceus , based on morphological characteristics and electrophoretic patterns of their intracellular isozymes. twenty monosporic strains were used, including five belonging to i. granulipolaris as a control. fourteen isozyme systems were tested, and the five having the best resolution selected: aspartate aminotransferase, esterases, alkaline phosphatase, glutamate dehydrogenase, and superoxide dismutase. these analyses confirmed the similarity between i. carneus and i. testaceus , since they both produced the same band patterns, which were in turn different from the band pattern of i. granulipolaris. so, as we couldn′t find any character wich permit us to classify the isolated studied during this work in defferent species, we believe that i. testaceus shoul be consider as a synonym of i. carneus .

Abstract: teacher education programs are an important alternative to raise standards in the teaching of english as a foreign language (efl). however, there are few studies that have explored the roles of teacher educators in this setting. three main research questions guided this study: what actions have teachers taken to attain their professional objectives as efl teachers? what experience have they had in professional development programs? what are the characteristics of an ideal teacher education program? this paper reports the findings concentrating on the ideal characteristics of an efl teacher educator analyzing the testimonies of teachers from public and private schools. the study used four focus groups sessions and a questionnaire as the main data collection techniques. the results suggest that issues such as knowledge of local realities, broad experience in teaching efl, command of the language, and experience in research are identified as the most desirable characteristics of efl teacher educators.

Abstract: with the recent financial crisis, which originated in the mortgage market of the u.s., the role of financial regulation has been reconsidered, especially with regard to the two main sources of financial instability in the system: capital flows and poor risk management. as a consequence, experts and policy makers have suggested that the measures in basil ii need to be revised, and that a series of changes regarding supervision and control of the international financial system must be done. the financial reform plan, recently presented by the president of the u.s., barack obama, has been added to the debate on the structure of financial regulation. in this paper, the main topics that have emerged from the debate are discussed.

Abstract: the design and implementation of a holistic professional development program for elementary school english teachers in colombia concerns target language improvement and pedagogical reflection. school-based and learner-centered, the program is characteristic of a synthetic, progressive, process-oriented curriculum as teachers’ language and pedagogical needs determined the learning and pedagogical activities for the program. the teachers improved their use of conventional english and became aware of an alternative approach for early foreign language instruction. they reported increased confidence using english and implementing new methodological strategies by getting positive feedback from their learners. positive changes in teachers’ and students’ attitudes towards english suggest that this holistic approach be used as a viable professional development program for elementary school teachers in colombia.
