Di Liscia,Maria Silvia;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232011000200005
Abstract: this paper studies the smallpox vaccination in argentina since 1870, when these discussions were inittiaded until the 1910s, when they were extended to the rest of the country. we analyze immunization practices implemented prior to the compulsory vaccination law, passed in 1886 for the capital and in 1904 for the rest of the country. such a move found resistance from different sectors. its approval depended on the consequences of modernization and urbanization, the weight of hygienists in the political arena, and its extension depended on a different administrative conception, incorporating new areas and sectors to the national scenario.
Di Liscia,María Herminia;
Dynamis , 2012, DOI: 10.4321/S0211-95362012000100010
Abstract: the passage of a law requires previous negotiation processes that consider the background, arguments, support and the appropriate terminology for approaching the issue. the legal domain is a discursive field in which a dual struggle develops: to establish designations and to introduce thatwhich the law establishes into everyday practice. hence, conflictive processes are unleashed in which social agents are confronted by political parties, by institutions and by their own political and subjective identities. this article analyses the development of the "1363 law", which was passed in november 1991 in the legislature of la pampa province (argentina). this law created a provincial programme for responsible procreation, the first provincial legislation on contraception to be established. although reproduction also involves males, special account is taken of speeches referring to females, given that the culture superimposes maternity on the female identity and references are therefore weighted towards the condition of women. we use the particularity of this case and its analytical potential in order to understand others, using as empirical material the parliamentary debate and interviews with the author of the law and with key informants. we address the following questions: what was the national and provincial context in which the law on responsible procreation was framed? what were the strategies adopted to achieve it? how was contraception articulated within the peronist worldview of women? what meanings did the term "responsible procreation" bring into play? finally, we present a brief assessment of the law's application.
Di Liscia, María Silvia;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702002000400010
Abstract: this analysis of the forms of social protection available in argentina during 1935-48 pays special attention to the distinguishing aspects of infant mortality and birthrates in urbanized areas along the country's coastline. different government public health institutions - such as pediatric and maternity institutes - undertook assistance work among single mothers, where moral teachings played an important role and where marriage was encouraged for its regulatory role in avoiding high rates of illegitimacy. in this task, physicians, visiting nurses, and social assistants from government institutions agreed with the church hierarchy and catholic intellectuals, since both sectors considered matrimonial legitimacy vital to limiting a decline in the national birthrate.

Di Liscia,María Silvia;
Revista Pilquen , 2008,
Abstract: this paper explores the imaginary constructed about the pampas from the stories of the salesian priest and doctor of natural sciences, juan v. monticelli during different journeys in the first decades of the 20th century. the misional task in the territory is combined with flora reconnaissance, following a tradition that the catholic church and science had begun long before the 20th century. in several scientific and popularization works, monticelli presented a permanently changing environment due to exhaustive soil explotation. thus, the writing of the voyager explores the possibilities and limits of pampas, with a picture that reflects its very fertile plains with abundant wheat fields as well as native forests' drains; the thriving populations on the agricultural frontier, and the abandonment of the immense regions of the thorny west. a population of selfsacrificed immigrants, the hard life of the woodcutters at native forests, and the difficulties for institutional operation at the start-up of a productive space within the critical context of the thirties, are shown in this far west constructed for entertainment of readers who admired the exotic and wanted to inquire as well as admire themselves.
Di Liscia,María Silvia;
Salud Colectiva , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1851-82652009000200008
Abstract: since the late 19th century, territorios nacionales [national territories] witnessed deep socioeconomic transformations and a process of state installation different from the rest of historical provinces. demographic statistics, and especially morbidity and mortality records were used by hygienist projects to enhance argentinian material progress in the most developed areas of the country, but mechanisms and information gathering as well as tabulation and systematization implied important problems for the new areas. by using documentation produced in the departamento nacional de higiene [national hygiene department] and other public agencies, an analysis is developed concerning the difficulties for the access to demographic information related to sanitary aspects, which were, nonetheless, crucial to future planning of public policies and for the formation of new public health institutions. gaunt and fragmented knowledge of diseases and death causes in the territorios nacionales did not prevent its formalization, even with delays and limitations, but such a situation is related to political needs for institutional emergence during the 1930's and 1940's and not necessarily a deeper demographic knowledge of the population that was to be medicalized.
Cifras y problemas.
Género y memorias Gender and memories
Studing the building of women's identity and citizenship, imply analysing the memory's process and contain. In the socialization, the memory is maked since genders presuppose, inside them, developed processes of inclusion and exclusion, in order that the memory is the result of power relations. The women tell their existences through their maternities, their care toward the others. They are tales from the body, in which connect their intergender and social identities. These are the topics that give sense and value to the lived and allow resignifying the happenings from the past in order to strengthened and placed in the present. Due to this, recover and value the women's memory aim their empowerment.
Abstract: This paper analises the ways used by the physicians to support scientifically the inferior condition of the native people of the Pampa and Patagonia. Several physicians, like Paolo Mantegazza, Benjamin Dupont, José Franceschi and Lucio Meléndez, had a typical positivist ideology about the middle of the XIXa Century in Argentina, conected with the aplication of the biological theory for the elimination of native people.
