Duration of feeding and superficial and in-depth damage to soybean seed by selected species of stink bugs (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae)

Abstract: laboratory studies were conducted to compare duration of feeding and superficial and in-depth damage to soybean (glycine max) seeds by the southern green stink bug, nezara viridula (l.), the neotropical brown stink bug, euschistus heros (f.), the red-banded stink bug, piezodorus guildinii (westwood), and the green-belly stink bug, dichelops melacanthus (dallas). results indicated that feeding time was significantly longer for n. viridula (≈ 133 min) compared to e. heros and d. melacanthus (≈ 70 min), but not different from p. guildinii (≈ 103 min). there was a positive correlation between feeding time and the resulting damage for e. heros, n. viridula and p. guildinii (r2 > 0.80, p < 0.0001), but not for d. melacanthus (r2 = 0.1011, p = 0.1493). the deepest seed damage (2.0 mm) was made by p. guildinii and the shallowest (0.5 mm) by d. melacanthus. the depth of the seed damage by e. heros and n. viridula (0.8, 1.2 mm, respectively) was intermediate in comparison to the other species studied. feeding damage to the seed endosperm caused variable cell disruption and protein body dissolution, particularly when p. guildinii fed on seeds, suggesting that the deleterious action of salivary enzymes was greater for this bug compared to the others.

Abstract: this article represents a first communication of the accumulated reflections of a group of educators on their experience with the piá project. the piá project is a self-managed project in education constituted by students of the university of s?o paulo who, motivated by the development of a conception of education and a praxis that go beyond the current school molds, have been carrying out their activities since the end of 1997. having as one of its principles the public character of education, the piá project today serves at no cost 45 children from the barra funda area, using two spaces: the child education space - for children from two to six years of age - and the complementary education space - for seven or more year old children. the reflections presented in this article start from what we call the vicissitudes of the praxis, in which we describe our trajectory in education, the formulations and reformulations experienced by the project, the impasses we faced, and we propose discussions we feel to be important when we talk about an education truly dedicated to the formation of subjects. the result is a narration, part history, part theories and questions, that gradually sketches our experience, which we hope will raise questions in other researchers' minds about the (im)possibilities of education.

Abstract: aqueous solutions of neem oil and aqueous extracts of neem seeds and leaves were sprayed on coffee fruits for laboratory evaluation of their efficiency in reducing infestation of the coffee borer, hypothenemus hampei (ferrari), in multi-choice preference assays in laboratory. neem oil and extracts reduced infestation of fruits in a dose-dependent manner, acting as a repellent. at 0.5%, 1% and 1.5%, the oil reduced fruit infestation by 30.2%, 42.5% (p > 0.05), and 58.6% (p < 0.05), respectively, as compared with the control. seed extracts at 1%, 2% and 4% (w/v) reduced infestation by 30.9%, 38.3% (p > 0.05) and 70.2% (p < 0.05), respectively; seed extracts at 0.15%, 1.5% and 15% (w/v) reduced fruit infestation by 16.5%, 38.5% (p > 0.05) and 56.9% (p < 0.05), respectively. spraying the emulsifiable oil at 1% on coffee fruits and adult borers was compared with spraying on fruits or adults only. adult-only spraying caused low mortality (p > 0.05) and low reduction on the number of damaged fruits (p > 0.05). fruit-only spraying significantly reduced insect survival rates and the number of damaged fruits (p < 0.05). however, spraying on adults and fruits caused the greatest reduction in adult survival (55.6%; p < 0.05) and in fruit infestation (78.7%; p < 0.05), probably due to insect mortality and neem oil repellence acting together.
Rostrum length, mandible serration, and food and salivary canals areas of selected species of stink bugs (Heteroptera, Pentatomidae)

Abstract: laboratory studies were conducted to compare rostrum length morphology of mandible serration and area of food and salivary canals of dichelops melacanthus (dallas) (dm), euschistus heros (f.) (eh), nezara viridula (l.) (nv), and piezodorus guildinii (westwood) (pg) (heteroptera: pentatomidae). nv showed the longest (5.9 mm) and pg the shortest (3.5 mm) rostrum length; dm and eh were intermediate. length and width of mandible tip areas holding serration was bigger for nv (106.0 and 30.2 μm, respectively) and smaller for pg (71.1 and 23.7 μm), with all species having four central teeth and three pairs of lateral teeth. the inner mandible surface showed squamous texture. cross-section of food and salivary canals (fc and sc) indicated greater area for nv and dm compared to eh and pg; however, the ratio fc/sc, yielded the highest relative area for pg.
Compatibility of the fungus Beauveria Bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. (Deuteromycetes) with extracts of neem seeds and leaves and the emulsible oil

Abstract: the compatibility of a commercial formula of emulsible neem oil (azadirachta indica a. juss.) and of aqueous extracts of neem seeds and leaves with beauveria bassiana (bals.) vuill. was evaluated in vitro. three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of each product on the fungus vegetative growth and on conidia production and viability. the products were incorporated to a culture medium (bda+e) and distributed into petri dishes, in the following concentrations: 0.15%; 1.5% and 15% (leaf aqueous extract), 1%; 2% and 4% (seed aqueous extract) and 0.5%; 1% and 1.5% (emulsible oil). vegetative growth and conidia production were the basis for characterization of the aqueous extracts of seeds and leaves and of the emulsible oil, using the t classification model for compatibility of products. seed and leaf extracts were less harmful to b. bassiana than the emulsible oil. under the tested concentrations, the oil was not compatible with b. bassiana, inhibiting conidia vegetative growth significantly and decreasing production and viability of conidia, particularly at higher concentrations. neem seed and leaf extracts were compatible with the entomopathogen in all concentrations. the seed extracts reduced conidia vegetative growth and production, but it did not affect the viability of spores. leaf extract at 15% had a small negative impact on vegetative growth, and on production and viability of conidia, but it was still compatible with the fungus b. bassiana, according to the t model.
Aging and food source effects on mandibular stylets teeth wear of phytophagous stink bug (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae)

Abstract: studies were conducted to test the effect of age and food sources on wear of the mandibular teeth of the phytophagous pentatomid, euschistus heros (f.). the total length (μm) of the area bearing the mandibular teeth, the length of the 1st tooth, and the height of the 2nd tooth for teneral (< 1 day-old) adults were significantly greater than that of adults fed on natural [green bean, phaseolus vulgaris pods, raw shelled peanuts, arachis hypogaea, and mature soybean, glycine max seeds] for 30 or 60 days. adults fed on artificial dry diet showed, in general, similar results to those of teneral adults. force (newtons) required penetrating the natural foods was significantly greater than that required penetrating the artificial diet. the greater hardness of the natural foods caused increased mandibular serration wear.
Cascade controlled pneumatic positioning system with LuGre model based friction compensation

Abstract: this paper proposes a cascade controller with friction compensation based on the lugre model. this control is applied to a pneumatic positioning system. the cascade methodology consists of dividing the pneumatic positioning system model into two subsystems: a mechanical subsystem and a pneumatic subsystem. this division allows the introduction of friction compensation at force level in the pneumatic positioning system. using lyapunov's direct method, the convergence of the tracking errors is shown under the assumption that the system parameters are known. experimental results illustrate the main characteristics of the proposed controller.

Abstract: Este artigo tem como objetivo discutir a rela o entre cultura - dimens es individualismo / coletivismo e verticalismo / horizontalismo - e atitude empreendedora - dimens es realiza o, planejamento, poder e inova o. Conceitos como de empreendedorismo, empreendedor e atitude empreendedora s o discutidos. Questionário contendo 36 itens foi respondido, em 2005, por 450 indivíduos, de 33 empresas brasileiras, de pequeno, médio e grande porte, no Distrito Federal. Foram realizadas análises descritivas e exploratórias, bem como, regress es padr o, para as quatro dimens es da atitude empreendedora e hierárquicas, para verificar efeitos de media o da rela o entre cultura e atitude empreendedora e os efeitos da modera o nessa rela o. Os resultados indicam que manifesta es da cultura predizem atitude empreendedora, podendo-se concluir que essa atitude está vinculada diretamente às dimens es: cultural, psicológica, e tecnológica.

Abstract: uncoupling proteins constitute a subgroup of mitochondrial carrier proteins that are located in the inner mitochondrial membrane. by dissipating proton gradients, they act to uncouple respiration from oxidative phosphorylation and convert fuel to heat. four homologous ucp isoforms have been identified. ucp-1, the first ucp to be described, is found exclusively in brown adipose tissue, ucp-2 in several tissues, ucp-3 in human skeletal muscle and rat brown adipose tissue and skeletal muscle, whereas ucp-4 is expressed in the brain. expression of ucp-3 in the skeletal muscle and the brown adipose tissue may place these tissues as important mediators for adaptative thermogenesis. however, the role of ucp-3 in energy expenditure and as a cause of obesity has been controversial. there are evidences that ucp-3 can be regulated by energy substrates as fatty acids and glucose, by entering the muscle and stimulating ucp-3 to increase energy expenditure. our aim in this review was to describe and discuss the available information on ucp-3 regulation and its possible relation with body weight control.
