Het instrumentarium van de Utrechtse Sterrenwacht
J.C. Deiman
Tijdschrift voor de Geschiedenis der Geneeskunde, Natuurwetenschappen, Wiskunde en Techniek , 1987,
Abstract: The instruments of the astronomical observatory of Utrecht University In this article the author traces the provenance of the astronomical, geodetical and navigational instruments from the collection of the astronomical observatroy of Utrecht University during the period 1723-1839. In 1723 Petrus van Musschenbroek was appointed professor of physics and mathematics; in 1732 he was also appointed professor of astronomy and on both occasions he ordered a series of instruments some of which are in Utrecht University Museum now. During the rest of the eighteenth century his successors bought only a few instruments, most of them are still in the possession of the university. In 1815, after the French occupation of the Netherlands had ended, the university, until then run by the community of Utrecht, became a national university. The young professor of physics and astronomy, Gernt Moll, started buying new instruments, most of them English. After his .sudden death in 1838 a new inventory was made by his successor, R. Van Rees. In this inventory the instruments are numbered; identification of the instruments is much easier from that time on.
Susceptibility of Nereocystis luetkeana (Laminariales, Ochrophyta) and Eualaria fistulosa (Laminariales, Ochrophyta) spores to sedimentation
Melissa Deiman*,Katrin Iken,Brenda Konar
Algae , 2012,
Abstract: The establishment of algal spores plays an essential role in adult kelp distribution and abundance patterns. Sedimentation is a key variable regulating algal spore settlement and success, possibly controlling species-specific dominance in situ. Laboratory experiments were used to determine spore attachment and survival rates of two Alaskan canopy-forming kelps, Nereocystis luetkeana (K. Mertens) Postels & Ruprecht and Eualaria fistulosa (Postels & Ruprecht) M. J. Wynne, to various types of sediment loading. Spore attachment for both species was significantly and similarly affected by three sediment treatments: suspended particles; settled sediment covering the substratum; and smothering of attached spores by settling sediment. Spore attachment decreased by approximately 90% at 420 mg sediment L-1, the highest sediment load tested here, under all three treatments for both species. These results suggest that increases in sedimentation may constrain the success of the spore stages, but sediment does not seem to be a likely factor explaining species-specific distribution patterns. However, while sedimentation affected spores of both species similarly, timing of spore release in relation to times of maximum sediment load in the water might differ for different species, possibly explaining kelp species distribution patterns.
Valencia Agudelo,Germán Darío; Cuartas Celis,Deiman;
Perfil de Coyuntura Económica , 2009,
Abstract: this article makes a revision of the literature that has been produced in colombia in the last two decades on the relationship between economic exclusion and violence. it shows how, starting in 1995 with the work of malcom deas and fernando gaitan, the analyses of violence have been divided into two groups: those which argue that it is caused by subjective factors (rational individuals who use violence as a means of gaining benefits and power) and those which emphasize objective conditions (pointing to inequality, poverty and weaknesses of the state in responding to social demands, among others, as the causes of violence). the article is placed in the last perspective; however, it proposes that, in order to have a more comprehensive and more realistic view, one that produces effective solutions to violence in colombia, both perspectives need to be taken into account.
